If you want a bare-bones template to build on, this is where you should start. It contains the updated doctype declaration and meta information for the latest version of HTML. It also has a script to deal with older versions of internet Explorer.

This template won't help you take advantage of the cool new features of HTML 5, but it has all of the basics that will let you start building your own page from scratch.

There are great options for portfolios, a blog with tags and categories, a contact page with map, and more. It has everything you need for a professional site. It's especially good for a business, but the portfolio makes it a very versatile template.

5. Freelancer Template

If you don't need a complex website, the one-page format is a great option. This template uses HTML5 to create a scrolling one-page site that works well for a very simple portfolio.

Beyond a small portfolio section and some "about" text, there's not a whole lot to this page. But its simplicity is its strength; bright colors and flat design help it stand out, and the contact form on the bottom makes it easy for prospective clients to get in touch.

6. Volton One-Page Portfolio Template

Another one-page portfolio, this includes a sidebar that makes it easy for readers to jump around between section. The portfolio images include hover text, so you could use them for non-photographic portfolio entries with links.

This template certainly stands out from the rest. With animated text on the homepage, big images, old-school fonts, and a dark theme, it doesn't look like much else out there. The demo is a portfolio/resume site, and that seems to suit it well. But it could be used for a wide variety of purposes.

Despite the cool effect on the homepage, this template is actually easy to edit. Just insert your text into the right place in the template and the included HTML5 and scripts will take care of the rest.

11. Typify One-Page Template

Looking for a simple template with bold colors? This is the one. It's a one-pager that has very few features, but still has the bright palette to grab a reader's attention.

The icons add a nice touch to the page, but there's little else in the way of graphics. It's perfect for placeholders, simple contact forms, and sharing small amounts of information.
