You could try defragmenting your computer if you haven't done it in a while. It works like a charm sometimes. It should only work if EVERYTHING on your computer is slow, though, but you can try it anyway. It gets rid of all the junk which gives the computer less to work on. Which speeds it up. And if you have a lot of junk, your computer deals with that too. And, best thing about defragmenting, is that it should not affect any of your files. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the great article, Guy. I'm a fan of Process Explorer myself and use it to monitor running processes.

Since we are talking about processes, I found a really useful site that explains Windows processes and how to fix related errors really well. The site is http://www.fileinspect.com. They are a lot better than www.processlibrary.com and other similar sites. Actually their svchost.exe article helped me fix 100%CPU usage: http://www.fileinspect.com/fileinfo/svchost-exe/

Or you could just use a program like SmartClose http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/SmartClose/smartclose.html
Works great AND it restarts everything afterwards when you want.

Thanks Aibek. I do agree somewhat with Noah, in the sense that this article isn't as complete as it should be. I should have written a 2-part article that outlines sources to review to determine what services and processes could be shut down safely.
Nonetheless, this gets the info out there that it is something that is possible to do.
