True, the free converters are more a waste of time than anything else. I'm not sure about a lot of the pay ones either. Many of them claim to covert dvds yet fail to get around the encryption. Here's more of my finding about dvd to ipod converters that work

Some of them use handbrake, some use this full functions packed Mac DVD Converter

For Windows, I would recommend this damn good tool - iSkysoft DVD Ripper which outputs converted videos with great quality. In addition, it's so straight-forware that even a computer illiterate can rip DVDs with ease. In a word, iSkysoft DVD Ripper is a wise chooice to backup your DVDs.

I found another DVD Ripper software, Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum is not a bad choice if you’re looking for an easy to use program that includes some nice features and will allow you to rip to most any format. I think for the price it’s worth it if you’ll utilize all of the features and will be doing more than just converting or ripping to the new iPod ect.
If you just need to rip movies for the iPod, then I’d go with one of the free versions I already looked at.

Pros:
+Fairly easy to use
+Also give you the ability to crop, watermark or add effects
+Relatively fast
+No ability to change aspect ratio

Cons:
-Expensive
-Automatically selects everything on the DVD
-Large final file size
