Hi there,

Back with a quick comment – I finally got round to tidying up and renaming those Search plugins. All sorted out neat and tidy.

… and then a few days later, they’d changed back to their previous names!

I reckon that it’s got something to do with Firefox auto-updating searchplugins (Tools, Options, Advanced – Update).

I’ve switched off the searchplugins auto-update – it appears that this causes a fresh version of the searchplugin to be downloaded, and then the name gets changed back to what it was before!

Thanks very much Neil – quite reassuring – especially since Firefox will have checked for updates to your search engines (I assume, if the box is ticked in the Update Options).

When I’ve got a mo I’ll have to give it all a whirl. Surely someone at Mozilla will have realised that the next iteration of Firefox must have a “Rename” facility for the search engines in their Search Engine Manager. After all, you can move ‘em up and down and delete them at the click of a button – so why not rename…?!

(Seems that IE7’s search engines are a lot tidier than Firefox’s)…

Good question to which I don’t know the answer. But I will say this – I have had my search plug-ins renamed for a long time – and the names haven’t reverted back at any time. During this time, I have gone through three versions of Firefox and nothing in the search box has changed.

Excellent tip – have been looking for this for ages.

Do you know if this affects the way search plugins update? Search plugins sometimes update themselves according to the “UpdateCheckDays” string. For example – would the search engine name revert if the plugin detects its changed?

Agree … some of the search plugin names are really terrible. “Dict.cc En<>De” WTF?
