There's no denying the power of Twitter to bring you breaking news. Whether it's from mainstream media and journalists, passersby with access to Twitter, or even the people who are part of the story, they're all sharing their experiences on Twitter.

So with all that information, how do you make sure you're not missing the important stories?

Method 1: Digest

With the free service Nuzzel, after you log into the site using your Twitter account, it will send you a daily digest of the most important news stories shared by the people you follow.

You can also view news on the site itself, and filter it down to the past 24 hours to a week, and share that page with anyone, making it a great way for other people who aren't on Twitter to get something out of the service.

Nuzzel

Nuzzel is also available as iOS and Android apps. Other good ways to get digests of important news stories on Twitter include Flipboard and Twitter's own Moments.

Method 2: As It Happens

Keeping up with breaking news through social media as it happens is a little more challenging. The best way to go about this is to follow these accounts, and turn on notifications for when they tweet.

Turning on notifications for all of these accounts might be a little overwhelming (and redundant) so it's probably best to choose one or two accounts that appeal to you and stick with those.

Alternatively, you could create a list of these accounts and check it periodically.

Which accounts would you add to that list? And how do you get your breaking news on Twitter? Let us know in the comments.
