Updating Portable Firefox with the internal updater will mess up the registry settings of your installed version of Firefox if you have one. Explained here http://portableapps.com/node/10338

Yes I have had an update give me a problem once only though. It was nice having the back up. I simply deleted the folder of the messed up Portable Firefox and copied my backup to the original location and updated again.

I get that you explained the way to update Portable Firefox with the standard version of Firefox. I just don't see why some one would update that way. Portable apps from portableapps.com are made to update by installing over the older version.

I also have a regular install of Firefox, but the portable edition is good for when you want to take it with you to work or school or try out new unstable versions.

Sounds good, but I would be careful. Portableapps.com give the advice not to use the feature for now because of bugs and it doesn't work for me. But if it works then that's nice.

Thanks for your comment. It is wise indeed to make a backup, although it never has gone wrong with me. Did it with you? I have described installing just the regular version over your portable Firefox, it's just written down clearly so nothing can go wrong.

I too think this is making the updating more complicated than it has to be. I always use the file from portableapps.com. They usually have their updates within 24 hours. I extract from there into a temporary folder, and then copy and paste my "profile" folder into the data folder of the new version. Then when I am satisfied that it works, I replace the folder that contains my older version.
