I do not have the patience to use encryption in my emails. I would only use private/public keys in the case of sending over important banks statements or passwords (though I would prefer to deliver such information over the phone or by fax). The phone is still safe, right? Or should I be spending money on learning Morse code?

GPG and PGP are outdated and just not widely used because it's too hard to use for most people.

Voltage Security has makes email encryption easy with Identity Based Encryption (IBE). Mail is encrypted and completely controlled by the sender and recipients. No messages are stored on Voltage servers.

Try it for yourself: www.voltage.com/vsn

I would love to use encrypted email.

Unfortunately the people I send to are either
a) Forbidden to use external security by their company, or
b) Too idle/dumb to bother with encryption.

That's why encryption is not as popular as it should be.

Hey,
For all you complaining that this is a difficult solution, try MailCloak - a (FREE) GnuPG based email encryption add on for firefox, and outlook. MailCloak is much easier to use then PGP or GnuPG by itself, and it doesn't require muiltple downloads or anything like that. Check out http://www.getmailcloak.com to get started.

I also disagree that this is a "simple" solution. If you put it in the right context, meaning, in our techy world, then yes, it's not that hard. Unfortunately, confidential data isn't always being sent from techy person to another techy person, which means that, I would have to guide the non-techy person into figuring out this "whole encryption thing", in which time, I could've driven to their place, and whispered the information in their ear :-P
I have tried this before, I have tried GPG, and other solutions, and non seem to work when it comes to the receiving party.
I have found that when I want to send something encrypted, I would be better off sending something using https://lockbin.com it's more of a step 1-2-3 thing. that's just my opinion :)

If you use Thunderbird, you should really try the Enigmail extension. It works almost transparently with Thunderbird, it's easy to install, and is quite intuitive. The routine use of strong encryption doesn't have to be painful. The extension also works on Linux. If you use KDE, check out KGpg for some help with common GnuPG tasks and key management.

It depends. For many years all this trickery had to be done from the command line - now you just have to click a few buttons and install a single application.

Even if it is remotely hard to use - don't you think that is offset by the security benefit?

Many new computer users consider encryption too hard to use ,after all of the above I can see why none geeks would consider it hard to use
