How to Disable “Send to OneNote” in the System Tray

Evernote or OneNote, that’s the impossible question for note-taking enthusiasts. Personally, I think it’s awesome that we have two contenders that are both strong enough to sustain an ongoing debate.

It’s no secret that I use OneNote on a daily basis, mainly because of its many lesser-known features. And with Evernote’s recent change in pricing, a lot of folks are making the switch from Evernote to OneNote.

If you just started using OneNote, you may be annoyed by that “Send to OneNote” icon that sits in the system tray and keeps coming back even after you close it. Here’s how to get rid of it.


The tool is actually integrated into OneNote itself, so go ahead and launch OneNote. (The desktop version, not the Windows 10 app store version.) Once launched, take the following steps:

  • Navigate to File > Options.
  • Navigate to the Display section.
  • Uncheck “Place OneNote icon in the notification area of the taskbar”.
  • Click OK.

If the icon still resides in the system tray, just right-click it and exit it. Now that the setting is off, it won’t ever return — even if you restart your computer!
