In an era so dominated by technology and Internet, you’d think people would be more attached to their phones. Let’s take a look at how the vote turned out.

Out of 376 votes in total, 9% said they’d like to shut off their phone but they use it for work, 17% would not consider shutting off their phone, 29% find the idea appealing, and a surprising 45% say they already do it! Do you believe it?

This week’s poll question is: How Many Apps Do You Have Installed On Your Phone?

Ads by Google
Want to make some extra MakeUseOf reward points? The most useful comment on the poll will be awarded 150 points!

The average number of apps for an iPhone user is around 40. For Android, the number is slightly lower, averaging at around 30. These are just averages, though. I personally know people who have over 100 apps installed, and others than don’t have more than 10.

There are also other smartphones around other than the ever-mentioned iPhone and Android; how about Windows Phone users? What about Blackberry? And let’s not forget that app-less feature phones are still pretty abundant. Where are you on the app graph? Unfortunately, the poll will not give us a real average for MakeUseOf readers, but it will give us a glimpse into your mobile habits.

Feel free to give us a more accurate number in the comments. If enough of you give precise number, I promise to calculate an average and publish it next week. Don’t forget to mention which phone and OS you use!

472 apps and still looking for a truly great app for travel for an expedition where you have a bunch of people and gear to manage. And one for goals and tasks. I have several, just none that are really good at that.

I'm an old guy (age 77). I expected I would use my smartphone (iPhone 4) to make telephone calls. Wrong! My grandkids will respond to text messages, so I keep in touch with them. I dictate messages on the Dragon app; I read books on my Kindle app; I listen to books on my Audible app; I send photos of local flowers to family and friends; I record my blood pressure in my Capzule PHR app, keep passwords on SplashID, shopping lists on Splash Shopr, watch movies on Netflix, "To Do" lists on WorkFlowy, I save interesting web pages into Pocket to read later, etc. etc. There may be a few of my 85 apps that I don't use, but they are on the phone if I need them!

Depending on what really counts as an app, and what is part of the OS, I have about 63 total on my Android. I use 36 of these either daily or weekly, 15 more of them less frequently, and there are 12 built in, unremovable apps I never use sucking up space.

I have 39 apps installed. The most used ones are Ymail, Taptu, Firefox, Vector and Jango radio.
The other apps are just used occasionally when there is any need.

I've 102 apps (including system apps) on my CanvasHD which I bought two weeks back. I use about 20 of them regularly, ie on a daily basis and use the rest of them occasionally. The number will definitely increase on coming days since I had installed 150+ apps on my Nexus One and would have installed more if had more space.

At one point I had around 150 apps installed on my android smartphone. Then I did a factory reset recently and now I have around 15 apps installed and hope to keep it that way for peace of mind and manageability. On hindsight, I only actually need these 15 apps and no more, earlier it was a overkill and lot of apps were lost, I hope you understand what I mean, just installed and lying there and totally ignored.

Are we counting the preinstalled apps that come with the phone?
or just the ones that we have downloaded ourselves?

Can't give meaningful reply till the poll is clear.

It doesn't really matter, to be honest. You can count the ones that came with your phone as well. :)

As of this moment, I have 56 on my iPhone 4 (I'm not sure if the default 'apps' are included on this list). Anyway, to be honest, I only use about half with some regularity:

I'm truly amazed by some of the numbers I've seen. 200, 300, 400+ apps? Seriously?

I'm sensing a little bit of app-hoarding here. Of course every person will have their own reasons for so many apps, but I can't help but feel that there's a lot of that 'someday I'll need this.' Yeah, that could be true. But then there are those times that you've got 3 or 4 folders with different photo apps, where the only difference is two or three filters. Or the news apps, where you have all imaginable newspaper/tv station app installed...

Bottom of the line, it's just a little too much for me, but I have noting against others who feel the opposite.

    Well I don't have a number but it's definitely 50+ (got 5 pages of apps in a 4x4 grid).
I recently purchased the olden goldie SGS2, and if I had to just make some calls and text I wouldn't have spent that much money on it.
Once you get a smartphone, you tend to "appify" your work.

For example, I used to keep a small notepad to keep track of my expenditure and anything important during the day. Now I use Google Keep.
Or I used to just memorize the lyrics of a nice new song I'd hear on my way and search google for the lyrics when I get home, now I've got Shazam to do that.
    Example are endless!

You slowly discover more & more useful apps that you can work with. And so goes for the games, you just can't get enough with 1. I currently have 20+ games installed which I play depending on time available and situation.

Example if I'm just lying in my bed, I can play Riptide GP or NFS, but if I'm at an appointment, I'd choose a quickie like 7 Little words or maybe Super Hexagon.. :D

Although not an iPhone my iPod Touch can send and receive wi-fi enabled calls as well as Face Time and sms texting and also use it to listen to music and news so I really consider it a communication device like an iPhone. And like most iPhone users I use it extensively.

App wise; I'm not much of a game person with only a few like Real Racing 2&3 and a few Pin ball games. I do aggressively seek out apps that are more in the productivity category. I like evaluating their features and keep the cream of the crop. These include photography, video, audio, design, filters, drawing, painting and utilities to name a few. Because of memory limitations I often have to trash less used apps to make room for new or large updated ones. To date I have 385 apps which I'm finding to be close to my limit.

I used to install all the good apps that I consider "I'll definitely use this some day" but my phone/tablet became very slow, the reason for this is unfortunately many apps still load at the background even if you never use it, it's the "achilles tendone" of android :(

I have about 120 apps, but that's only because I have a 16 gig iPhone 4, and some of my apps take up several hundred megabytes. I have almost no games now, because they are too big. Next phone will definitely have to have more space, because I could really use some more apps. ;-)

About 67 or so but I only use about 20 on a regular basis on my LG Motion. Mind you a chunk of that is apps I can't remove [I haven't rooted my phone yet] or have that are not useful at the moment [Where's my Droid for one]. I want more like games [I get bored really easily] and productivity apps to make it so I can get off my computer and sit on my bed instead of sitting at a desk into the wee hours of the morning but alas, that shall wait until I get a tablet- hopefully for xmas.

I have between 11 and 20 apps on my Samsung Galaxy Pocket. It slows down if you load too many apps and I have found that lots of apps (9GAG for example) can be replaced with a favourite in my browser.

My favourite games are Hill Climb Racing and Robo Miner, and the app that I probably use the most if Gmail.

    • Austin H

I have about 63, not including the ones Apple won't let me remove. I can honestly say that I use almost every one at least once or twice a month, though, so that's a plus I guess.
