The problem is, there are too many ebook formats out there. The ebooks that you have and want to read might not be supported by the digital reader that you use. That’s why we need an ebook converter which can easily transform one format to another.
In the realm of ebook converters, Calibre‘s name might sit at the top of the chart. But Calibre’s extensive features might be too much for regular users to handle. If you don’t need a complicated ebook management system and only want to convert one format to another, you might want to take a look at a simple application for Windows called Hamster Free Ebook Converter.
In The Beginning
Before you can start converting, you have to download and install the small under-500KB application from the official site.
During the installation, you will be offered other applications from the developer. Uncheck the option if you don’t want them. At the end of the installation, you can watch a short video about the app.
Between Devices & Formats
Using the converter itself is fairly simple. Start by adding the documents and/or ebooks that you want to convert. You can do this either by dragging and dropping the files or by choosing them via the Explorer window. You can choose documents from different formats to be converted in one batch.
If you want to change the file names, you can do so in the list window. All you need to do is just click on the name and edit the text. You can also add more documents or move to the next step.
The next step is choosing the format for the new ebooks. But instead of giving you a list of formats, Hamster starts with a list of brands.
Choose one of the brands, and then you can choose the device type and one of the ebook formats supported by the device that you chose. This kind of approach will guarantee that users will not choose the wrong format and the new ebook can be opened in the device.
For example, choosing Apple will give you a list of iOS devices like the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch under “Select Device“.
The “Format” list also consists of only formats supported by the device that you’ve chosen.
After choosing the combination of device and format, click the “Convert” button.
After that, choose the location where you want to save the result.
Then the conversion process will take place. The time needed to finish the process will depend on the number of documents in the batch and the power of your computer. But, with a fast computer, the process should only last for a few seconds. After that you can open the folder where the ebook results are stored, or repeat the process again.
Dead Trees Are Not Required
Armed with Hamster, you can convert almost any ebook format to the format that you need, put the ebooks into your device(s), and bring your books on the road. Not only can you enjoy your books anywhere you want without the bulk and weight of physical books, but you will also help the environment by reducing the need to cut down trees to produce paper.
