Get A Free UK Phone Number & Make Free International Calls

free uk phone numberVoIP User is a service that provides users with a free UK phone number for inbound calls, as well as a free SIP account to make free outbound international calls. You can set up an account to forward from a UK number to an international number, receive calls on your computer at UK phone, or both. When you set up that free UK phone number for your computer, you can also use it to make free outbound international calls.

It all sounds too good to be true and you’re probably asking the same questions I asked when I first heard about the service.

How can such a service sustain itself? How can they afford to do this?

According to the About VoIP page, they are funded by the calls made to their non-geographic DID (DIrect Dial) inbound numbers. So it is in their best interest to give away as many free numbers as they can, as calls made to those numbers provide revenue.

What’s the catch?

VoIP User is non-profit, and the revenue generated by inbound calls is used to allow users to make free international calls with their SIP accounts. As more inbound calls are made, more pooled minutes are made available for users to make outbound calls.

In order to prevent abuse (leeching of minutes), they have developed an algorithm to rate accounts on a scale from -10 to +10. Those with higher ratings are given priority to use pooled minutes. Users that do not generate inbound minutes will have lower account ratings, and may not be able to make outbound calls (or the amount of time they are allowed to call may be limited).

free outbound calls

If you don’t know anyone in the UK and do not receive any inbound calls on your account, there will be restrictions on the amount of free outbound calling you will be able to do. If you are interested in making outbound calls, you will need to download a SIP client for your computer. One of the more popular free clients is X-Lite.

To set up X-Lite for VoIP User:

  • Launch X-Lite and click the menu button (looks like a down arrow).
  • Click on SIP Account Settings…
  • Click the Add… button.
  • Enter a Display Name (it is arbitrary what you enter here) in the account properties window.
  • Enter your SIP username in both the User name and Authorization user name fields, as it appears on your SIP user settings page at VoIP User.
  • Enter your SIP password. If you don’t remember what your password was when you signed up for VoIP user, you can reset your SIP password.
  • Enter voipuser.org for the Domain.
  • Enable the checkbox to Register with domain and receive incoming calls.
  • Click the proxy radio button and enter sip.voipuser.org for the proxy.
  • Click OK.
  • Call someone!

To make calls, you will need to use the full international code standard. For instance, to dial the number 01234 567890 in the UK you would dial 0044 1234 567890. To dial 123 456 7890 in the USA, you would dial 001 123 456 7890. Please note that there is a mandatory 72 hour waiting period before you are able to make any outbound calls.

What do you think of VoIP User? What other service(s) do you use to make free international calls? Those who are interested can also check out a bunch of free international calling services that were profiled earlier.

I’m not sure what Voxilla offers. At a glance, it seems as though freedigits.com offers a free USA phone number to receive incoming calls. However, free outbound calls are limited to toll-free 800 numbers in the US. I suspect they may offer a pay service to make outbound calls to other numbers.

They do not allow signups with free email accounts such as Hotmail. My apologies for omitting this information from the article. I had signed up with them a few years ago, and I forgot they do not allow signups with free email accounts. . You should be able to sign up with your the email address from your Internet service provider if you have one.

Good question. It may be difficult if you’re outside of the UK and you don’t know anyone that lives there. Perhaps you can post your number in a forum somewhere? Start an international business and solicit clients in the UK?

    Hi Jorge,

Thank you so much for the write up on about our website, and for the detailed instructions (probably better than my original ;) ).

I thought I’d make some contribution to some of the discussion in comments here.

I appreciate the gesture, but to be honest you shouldn’t. If you need a reasonable level of outbound calling, VoIP User probably won’t work that well for you anyway, and you may find a commercial provider better (it’s a competitive space, so they’re all pretty cheap right now).

I’m always more than glad to be an advocate for great services such as yours. My brother moved to the UK a few years ago, so it makes it much easier (and cheaper) for him to call me and my folks back here in the USA.

I’ve been trying for hours now but this simply doesn’t work. I moved out of the UK a few years ago but still receive many calls a day from friends and family there. I’d love to get a UK number and save them all money however… every time I click “Request” for an 0870 number, the following message appears: “Number Activation failed
Sorry but for technical reasons we currently can’t activate numbers. Please try again later…”
I’ve gone back to the site and retried countless times over the last 10hrs.

I keep going back. I keep getting the error message. 5 more hours of downtime. Hopefully, their lines are more reliable than their website!
Is this vaporware? I really want to try this service but can’t get a number from it!

      Hi Melvyn,

Just spotted this. We had a big rush on 0870 numbers when BT announced that AnyTime bundle customers can call them for free evenings and weekends. So, in short, we ran out.

You should be able to get an 0844 number though.

We offer support in our forum which is there if you have any further problems. You’ll generally get a response pretty quickly and we do our best to resolve any issues as quickly as we can.

Thanks. I’ve signed up for an 0844 number. Doesn’t seem to be active yet even though I’ve received “success” messages on all the screens and forwarded it to an Israeli number.

All my attempts to call it are cut off. I guess I’m off to your forums…

I think that voipuser outbound is currently experiencing issues. I’m not sure how to call the Philippines, but you may want to try asking within the voipuser forums.
