Are you a Wired fan? Have you been collecting issues since the first one came out in 1993? Yes, it’s hard to believe, but Wired has been around for almost 20 years. Now, in tune with the digital revolution, they have now released their very first issue of the magazine as an iPad app, and it’s free!
In order to download this first issue, you’d have to first download the Wired app which will load into your newsstand. You can find the Premiere Issue in the Wired store inside the Wired app. This is a hefty 722MB download, but having this very first issue in digital form is a real treat for fans, and is an interesting download for anyone who is curious about what technology looked like in 1993.
The issue itself is a fascinating glimpse into what the future looked like 19 years ago, and also includes a 12,000-word oral history of Wired. The digital issue comes complete with all the articles and photos which appeared in the original issue, and you can also enable annotations to learn more about what you’re reading from today’s perspective. For example, in the image below you can see a Macintosh PowerBook, which weighed 6.8 pounds and cost more than $7000 in today’s dollars.
Download this issue for free through the Wired app and take a trip back in time. Don’t forget to tell us about what you’ve found back then!
