FirePlug is a unique feed aggregator that is both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly practical. The iPhone app offers various streams of content from different sources, letting users build and customize as they please.
Upon first downloading, a quick, informative tutorial gives users a concise explanation of what the app actually does. Of course, an account must first be created, and this merely helps save all of your usual news sources. Doing so also creates a profile that tracks your reading habits, and this could be surprisingly useful.
FirePlug offers a vast library of news sources that you can browse through and add to your stream. However, you cannot self-install a source from outside of the app (such as an RSS feed). Don’t worry though – the chances are that your favorite news source is already available. The app then lists content from your chosen sources as a single stream or in user-generated categorical playlists.
Another nice feature is the app’s social integration. By connecting with Facebook, you can read your socially-added stories alongside the news. This merging of local sharing and mainstream news is one area where FirePlug truly stands out. Unfortunately, the app lacks the integration of Twitter or any other social sharing site, so it would be nice to see this eventually included.
Overall, FirePlug is the perfect example of a mobile news aggregator. Its practicality, design, and purpose make it rise above similar apps.
