As a geek you’re bound to have a wishlist packed full of real gadgets that exist right now. And yet fictional gadgets are always so much cooler than those sitting on store shelves.

There are plenty of fictional gadgets to choose from too, with countless books, movies, and television shows having featured them over the years. The question is, which fictional gadget would you sell your soul to own? If selling your soul in return for a gadget was an option, of course.

Transport Plate or Transport Bean (like the star trek).
No one need a car, airplane, subway or whatever to go at work, schooll or everywhere,.
If you wish a vacation on tahiti or sky in alps, walk over the board and now you stay there.

Selling my soul for a gadget ? Well , that's a risky question . The fictional gadget which I want would be Jack Sparrow's "Black Pearl" , wait that is not a gadget , right ? A gadget which is currently in development and possibly be present in the future is the Marauder's Map ( many android apps are similar to that ) and the Invisibility Cloak as well as a whole invisible sheet of covers ( such as that in the Avengers' Air Carrier ) . They are all having-a-possiblity-to-exist and equally fantastic !

Repeat from your last gadget poll whose purpose I misunderstood:

I want an audio DAC with a difference. It should accept audio input either from USB or from a 1/8" stereo analog input, filter it with fast FFT based floating point convolution, and output at pristine quality to analog 'phone/line. The convolution kernels should be downloadable/selectable via the USB and it should keep them in non-volatile ram for off-line, analog only use. It should filter stereo to stereo straight through or stereo to stereo with four kernels and cross channel mixing for ambiance and stereo->binaural.

On that base hardware I can offer some DSP magic and others can probably improve on it and add to it. :-)

J.A.R.V.I.S. because he knows what I need before I do. He can simulate my designs. Sift through all my files faster than I can to find just the right one. He can even turn of the coffee pot if I forget.
But he still can't carry out the trash. You need Pepper for that.

    Holodeck.

Or a TARDIS. But a holodeck would be nicer.

If this doesn't qualify as a gadget, then it would be a direct brain-computer interface that would put me into the Matrix.

A DIGITAL TIME MACHINE, of course. It would be user wearable with an interface similar to Google Glass except that instructions from the user to the device would be transmitted telepathically. To avoid changing the past (as this could very well change the future) the device would be "read only", the searchable time frame would be restricted to a time of "seek date < today's date" (I don't wish to know the future), and the user would not be visible or audible to those in the past. To search the past for a particular event, one would simply think of the desired search terms (e.g., dates, places, events, names, etc.) and then scroll through the resulting "hits" to find the desired event. Each hit would include a brief "thumbnail video" to assist the user in zeroing in on the targeted event. "Tagging" individuals of interest would allow the user to follow them in "live mode" or have their activities recorded, thus allowing the user to view their activities at the user's leisure, much like a DPR (Digital Past Recorder). This is the type of device for which I would sell my soul.

      May 30, 2014 at 5:58 pm

A read-only time machine is a stroke of genius. You've thought about this a little too long and hard, haven't you ;)

Throughout my life, there have only been 3 possible gadgets I would sell my soul for:

    1. A Stop-Watch.
This would be a watch which could pause time for everyone but the person holding the watch itself. With this device, the possibilities are endless. My mind reaches toward achieving goals and doing things which would solve so many of the world's problems, as well as a few nefarious, self-indulgent things I would do (that I will never speak of aloud or in print).

    2. A Quantum Leap Teleporter
I have always fantasized about traveling back into the past to make right things that once went wrong. The best example of this is the very first Butterfly Effect film, as well as Quantum Leap. Jumping back into my younger self to redo things, tell the girls I loved that I loved them (instead of quietly hiding my feelings for fear of rejection), and changing my ow present for a better future... But what would the consequences be?

    3. An actual WORKING Time-Machine
If I were able to Marty McFly back to an earlier era, I would bring with me medicines that did not exist back then and a universal power adapter with a solar generator so that I would have an endless power supply for whatever gadgets I would have with me. I cold visit great events, watch history unfold first hand, and - having watched so many time travel films - NOT make the mistakes so many time travelers make when they go back.

Ultimately, being an Atheist and a rational humanist, I do not actually believe in "the soul" so all of this is pretty much moot.

    • Dave P
      May 30, 2014 at 5:57 pm

You may be taking the soul thing too literally there :)

They're all great choices. I so wish time travel was possible but I don't think we'll ever have the capacity to do it. If humanity had, at any time in our future, then surely we would have seen time travellers by now.

    TARDIS!
No more rush hours OR being late ever again.

I would personally like the Bumblebee (Transformer). All fictional gadgets are just that, gadgets. However, Bumblebee, scores way over others in that it has a soul for you, besides transforming into a cool car or a super cool robot with AI. It can be my mightiest protector and save me from all the bad elements in this world. However, above all it will be my FRIEND with a SOUL, and that is the gadget you can also give your SOUL for. Isn't it? :)

    • Dave P
