FeedMyTorrents Keeps TV Shows Downloading Automatically
Do you watch TV? Of course you do. You just might not watch it on a television anymore like me. I find that I watch most of my TV shows on my Windows Mobile device or in front of a computer. Yes I am a geek but that is not why I do it.
Time is something that is hard to come by nowadays so I take what I can get. If that is a Simpsons episode on my train ride home or an episode of “24″ while I am commuting from Manhattan to Far Jersey then to me that is awesome.
My TiVo at home tapes all my shows and I can grab them, convert them and go. But that takes time and time is what I don’t have.
So let’s say I visit this FeedMyTorrents website. They have RSS feeds all set up already for most of the popular shows that are currently syndicated.
You can click here without signing up to check out and grab their feeds. Check it out. Here is a snip of what they offer.

Each show has its own feed. This feed can be checked via most popular Torrent applications. The files are the same files you would find by searching your favorite Torrent site like The Pirate Bay or Bitsoup.
The blue “Normal” icon shows the resolution. Normal is just that. A standard broadcast. Some of the feeds have “HD” listed (720p)

So without signing up you can utilize the already created feeds. But If you create an account, you can combine all your favorite TV-shows to a single torrent feed.
Now that you get the idea let’s check out how to make it work. This gem is cross platform and works on the following torrent clients/OS:
- uTorrent (Windows/Mac OS)
- Azureus/Vuze (Windows)
- Deluge (Windows/Mac OS/Linux)
- BitComet (Windows)
- BitRocket (Mac OS)
Clicking on each of those links will take you to their own How To Guide. We will be working with Azureus on Windows.
Open up your Azureus and go to Tools – Plugins – Installation Wizard.

Next choose the top option to pick from a list from SourceForge

Scroll down and choose RSS Feed Scanner. Then click Next.

You will then see this screen :

Just click Install and you are almost done! In a few seconds you willl get a pop-up that says it is complete like so:

Now that it is installed, let’s set her up and activate it. Go to Tools… Plug-ins… RssFeed Scanner

Then simply click the Green Plus Sign on the top to add a show like I did below. You will be able to fill in the details on the right pane after the plus is clicked.

It will then ask you for the name of the feed and the URL. I entered the Simpsons URL from their website.
I used this link for Season 20 in normal resolution. I then clicked “save”.
You will need to check the box next to your entry to make sure it is enabled as you can see below:

Then click back over to the Status tab and expand your selection like you see below:

There are torrents for all the Simpsons episodes in season 20. You need to create a filter so that it knows what to download. Click the bottom + to add a new filter: Then pick a name for the filter. It doesn’t matter what it is.
In this instance I just want everything from my RSS to be downloaded so I just filled in my path, I chose Set State to be Forced Download and Checked the box next to Active: Enabled.
When I was done I hit the test button and the green bar at the bottom appeared. This means something matched my filter!

Awesome now click back to the status tab and right click on your feed. Hit Refresh and watch it work its auto downloading torrent magic!

If all went as planned you will see your torrents downloading. You can work your own magic with the feeds and filters and you do not have to refresh the feed as I showed you in the last step – but it will take a few minutes for it to check on its own.
If you get this to work let us know what client you are using! This is simply awesome. I love my torrents

How do I accomplish this using utorrent? Any ideas?
This tutorial is for version 1.8 and later.
Adding a feed
The RSS interface has been changed since 1.7.7. To use RSS now, you need to enable the category list. Press F7 or click Options -> Show Category List. Click anywhere in the lower half of the sidebar, where All Feeds is. Choose “Add RSS Feed.” Enter your RSS feed’s URL into the input box, and check Custom Alias if you want to give a name to the feed.
Note that the RSS Downloader will NOT consume any extra resources if you have no feeds present/enabled. Some feeds do not give direct links to the .torrent files. These feeds cannot be used for automatic downloading through filters.
Disabling a feed or filter
To disable a feed, simply right click the feed in the category list and choose “Disable Feed.” If you want to re-enable it, simply right click again and choose “Enable Feed.”
Renaming a feed
You can rename a feed or edit the URL by either right clicking it and choosing “Edit Feed” or double clicking on it.
Viewing releases on an RSS feed
To view the releases for an RSS feed, click on the feed. Alternatively, click on “All Feeds.” You can also view multiple feeds at once by holding Ctrl and clicking multiple feeds, or even combine releases and your torrents by clicking on a feed and a label or category for loaded torrents. All the releases currently on the feed will show in the main listview. Double clicking will attempt to download the .torrent for the release. To open the release’s URL in your browser, right click it and choose Open URL in Browser.
Extra columns of information are available for RSS feeds. To enable or disable them, right click on the name of any column. You can also click and drag columns to rearrange them. These settings are independent of the columns available when viewing your loaded torrents.
Using feeds that require HTTP authentication
For feeds that require HTTP authentication, simply use this format for the feed URL: http://username:password@sometorrentsite.com/rss.php
Using feeds that require cookies
To use feeds that require cookies, you must find the cookie for the site, and grab UID and pass from it.
* IE users will find their cookies in %UserProfile%\Cookies
* Firefox users will find their cookies in Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Cookies -> Show Cookies
* Opera users will find their cookies in Tools -> Advanced -> Cookies
* Users of other browsers will have to consult their browser’s documentation
Once you have the appropriate information, use this format for the feed URL:
http://sometorrentsite.com/rss.php:COOKIE:uid=1234;pass=asdjh12378912y3lkj
Some sites do not use uid and pass as the variables, or use additional ones, so you MUST use the exact variable name and the extra variables they specify! For example, on a certain site, it uses id, password, and secure as the cookie variables you must use.
Automatically downloading torrents
To automatically download all torrents from a feed, you can open the Edit Feed dialog and choose “Automatically download items published in feed.” Checking the smart episode filter will make it only download the first version of a particular episode. The smart episode filter not work if the “Episode” column is blank.
If you want to download only specific releases, there are two ways to do that. The simpler method is to right click on the relevant release in the list and choose “Add to favorites.” This will add it to your Favorites list and bring up the RSS Downloader dialog for further editing of your favorite.
The alternative method to automatically download specific releases is to right click on any feed or “All Feeds” and choose “RSS Downloader,” or press Ctrl-R. This will bring up the “RSS Downloader” dialog.
* Hit Add, then type the name of the favorite.
* Click on the editbox next to Filter: and add your filter. The allowed wildcards are * and ?
Multiple filters can be entered by separating each one with a |
An example of a filter you could use would be *MP3 Archives*
If you have a strange feed using underscores or something besides periods, you can also try something like *Go?Open*
Do not specify an episode or season number here. This will break the filter. Use the episode number function instead. Adding them here will only work if “filter matches original name instead of decoded name” is checked. This may be required for non-standard episode formats or dates.
This is the minimum required to setup a favorite. The rest of the functions are extra features for more control of the automatic downloads.
* Not: allows you to exclude certain strings from matching. An example is you don’t want releases with AC3 audio and H.264: you can write *AC3*|*H*264|*x*264* in Not: to exclude those.
* By default, torrents will automatically download to My Documents\Downloads. If you want the torrents to download to a specific folder, you must either specify a folder in Save in: or set a default download path in the “Directories” section of µTorrent’s preferences.
* Feed: chooses what feed you want the filter to apply to; either all of them or a specific one
* Quality allows you choose various qualities to match against, or allow all. You can choose more than one quality in the dropdown list.
* Episode number is to download only specific ep numbers, say to avoid releases of old episodes. It supports multiple formats. For example, to download only the first 12 episodes of season 1, type in 1×1-1×12 or 1×1-12. Or to download starting from episode 13 of season 1 and include all later seasons, type in 1×13-
* “Don’t start downloads automatically” will add any downloaded torrents in Stopped mode. They will be added to your list, but will not begin downloading until you choose them from the torrent list and start them.
* “Filter matches original name instead of decoded name” is so that you can match based off what the original name is in the feed (given in the Name column), instead of µTorrent’s parsed result.
* Give download highest priority sets all torrents downloaded automatically through RSS to the top of the queue, making your seeds and other downloads get queued if you reach the max active torrents.
* Smart ep. filter makes µTorrent only download the first version of each new episode that matches your filter. This function will only work if the “Episode” column is not blank.
* Minimum interval sets a minimum interval between matches for the filter: if you set it to 2 days, µTorrent will not download anything for at least 2 days after a match.
* You can use the Reset button to make µTorrent forget that it has downloaded episodes and the last time matched for that filter.
* Label for new torrents auto-sets a label for torrents that match the filter.
* All changes are automatically saved when you make them, so you don’t have to do anything once you’re done editing the filter.
* You can select a filter and press ? to see what the last four episodes were that matched, and the last time that the filter matched something. A list of the currently matching episodes from the feeds you’ve defined for it is also available in the “?” dialog, so you can double-check your filter expression.
Karl, buddy. Please change your Windows’ main font to anything other than Courier. Your screenshots attack my visual cortex like a screaming badger that’s been set on fire, trying to run a marathon distance of boiling butter with avocado spikes impaled into its rectum.
How about a nice Tahoma, or Verdana? Think of the children. They are our future.
Aw, I like Courier. It’s like a typewriter.
Thanks Mackenzie! So do I. I don’t see myself changing it anytime soon. But I will make my screenshots clearer in the future Eduardo.
(Comments wont nest below this level)I love you Mackenzie … you are hot!!!!
(Comments wont nest below this level)I mean in the nicest way possible… your looks are very very beautiful…. kisses babe…
dont be offended … be proud of your beauty and your admirers… you are the best…
I don’t personally use this particular service, but I do download all my TV shows with torrents when they come out. Torrents + TV is where the entire torrenting concept really outshines everything else out there, in my opinion. There’s just so much information being transferred with all the people getting shows from torrents these days; the genius of the entire thing takes my breath away.
Very nice article, I would have loved this back when I used public torrents it’s a lot nicer than TED.
My GOD! that’s a messy way to do this!
Just download TED (Torrent Episode Downloader, http://ted.nu/ ) and let it do ALL that stuff for you automatically instead!
Install it, choose your favourite shows and Voila! You’re done.
Go enjoy! =)
Why would you want to use a program when you can do it yourself with these rss feeds? I don’t like loading up unnecessary software.
Anyone else feeling TED?
Is there something similar but for rapidshare links?
I tried feedmytorrents for about a week, but every night I had downloaded and watched my shows from EZTV before they were available from feedmytorrents. EZTV also handles repacks in case there is an error in the show. Go to eztv.it and click on RSS tutorial. Its a little extra work to setup but you’ll get your shows much faster.
JJ
I also prefer TED, is uses minimal resources, PLUS i can use it with Utorrent which is BY FAR more resource friendly than Vuze. Its so simple to use, however it is not, as of yet, anime friendly(episodes numbered by sequence vs season & episode). I don’t understand what you mean by installing unnecessary software, as you are installing a plugin.
This is all useless…
mininova.org has the ability to create feeds based on a search(on which you can include tv-show/anime name and release group) which you can get a feed for…
sure, the moderation of the feed makes it somewhat better, but the idea is already there…
and for the peeps who use TED WITH uTorrent…you know utorrent can download ‘feeded’ torrents right ? never had a problem with it…
