Facebook recently announced it had smashed through the 1 billion users barrier. That’s 1 billion people around the world who are actively using Facebook each month. Of course it would be foolish to believe every single one of those users was an individual, legitimate, and human….but it’s an impressive achievement nonetheless.

There is just one question that needs to be asked – what is everybody actually doing when they’re logged into the biggest social networking site in the world? Thankfully we here at MakeUseOf have the power to find out the answer to that question, by asking our intelligent and loyal readership to answer it as eloquently as possible.

This Week’s Question…

What Do You Use Facebook For?

Although we won’t get 1 billion responses, those we do get can be examined in order to give us an overview of how people are using Facebook on a monthly, weekly, daily, or even hourly basis. I’m not asking you to think for yourself this week, to get creative, or to get the ol’ gray matter straining at the seams. This week’s question requires just one thing from you all….honesty.

Primarily we want to know what you actually do on Facebook. Do you communicate with friends and family? Do you keep in touch with online buddies? Do you upload photos for all your contacts to see? Do you share interesting articles (such as those MakeUseOf is packed full of) with your peers? Do you play games or use the apps? Do you maintain a page 10 Great Ways To Improve Your Facebook Page's Popularity 10 Great Ways To Improve Your Facebook Page's Popularity Facebook pages come in all manner of different shapes and sizes. Beyond that feel free to tell us about your personal experiences with Facebook. Do you consider it a joy to use or is it purely the best option available? Do you feel the Facebook experience has improved or worsened over the last few years? And why do you feel that way? What could Facebook do to improve its service, if anything? How do you see the future of Facebook panning out?

All comments will be digested to form conclusions in a follow-up post next week where we will detail what You Told UsOne reader will even win Comment Of The Weekwhich will be included in the follow-up post! What more motivation than that do you need to respond?

We Ask You is a weekly column dedicated to finding out the opinions of MakeUseOf readers. The questions asked are usually open-ended and likely to start a conversation. I use Facebook rarely, I don't comment on people's status or update my status I just log-in just to see what people are saying or updating their status on. I used to run a page for my brand but it didn't make me any significant change so i stopped updating.

No Facebook here anymore either, closed long ago. I use Twitter and email to keep in touch. been thinking about either a Google + or a Diaspora account. Don't know that I quite trust Google anymore though, seems like you just start to use a tool and they dump it. I loved Wave and a lot of other by gone stuff.

I don't like FB. There's no point to announce every little thing you do to the world. It might be useful for quick sharing, but sites like imgur best it nowadays. I do use it for 'liking' promotions or free downloads.

I am on FB a lot every day. I get news (local, national, political) on FB. A lot of my extended family is on FB, and we use it to exchange news and pics and videos. I
have FB-friends who are acquaintances IRL and FB-friends, who are friends of my family members, that I only interact with on FB. I'm not a very social person, IRL, so the interactions that I have on FB mean a lot.

Everyday!!.I log into Facebook everyday!! Maybe for a minute or for an hour, maybe more than once. I use Facebook passively like when doing some of my work if i need to use internet then at the same time i sign in to my Facebook account in another tab. I use Facebook for various purpose. First of all Friends..what would we have done without Facebook, at-least for me it helped find my first crush and my long lost best friend :) Secondly its fun. Facebook is fun with all its apps and games where I get to compete with my friends in some cool games. I also do maintain a group for our housing society where we create events and also share problems that need our attention. I along with some of my friends also maintain a page that only focuses on anime, as we just love anime and lastly i upload photos and videos to share with my friends, it also act as an portable album where i don't need to worry about the storage capacity and can access it anywhere there is internet connectivity. So that's it...i think Facebook helps me in many ways..and maybe someday i will make more use of it :)

I use facebook to talk with friends and to catch up with people I knew from when I was studying. I usually check the latest social gatherings, pictures of my friends' babies, and many more. I am usually on actively on facebook for 1 hour or so.

Well, started out on facebook because I have a hobby of entering contests. However once I got there I found family, old friends and connected to a large art and music community. I am self employed as a full time artist and guitar instructor. I am not only able to share my interests with everyone but have a following of my work. And when I'm not doing that it's fun to be silly!

I joined facebook for 1 reason, that was to play mafia wars.. :P
i added tons of strangers and ended up wasting a lot of time. Eventually i got bored, deleted that account and made a fresh one just for friends and family.
I do use facebook on a daily basis, and its mostly for my friends from school and college.
It would have been impossible to stay in touch with all of them without facebook.
Its not like i contact them on a regular basis, but just seeing their status updates/pics etc lets me know that all is good.
I am a member of multiple groups for different groups of friends and we use them to share things which we would not want the rest of the members in our friend list to see.
I use it to follow many people/topics/news that i am interested in(Even though i am on twitter, i don't use it).
Other than that i use facebook as a login app,to comment on many other websites.
i do like the google plus interface better than facebook, but it doesn't look like rest of my friends are migrating there, so i am on facebook for the time being.

I find Facebook to be an extremely valuable tool. Many people don't look beyond the surface, and thereby dismiss Facebook: meaningless, boring, inane, a waste of time.

On average I make roughly 3 posts a day; a mix of current events, lulz, and discussion points. On average I read less than one post made by others. Do I seek to entertain? Am I lonely? Far from it.

Firstly, I see Facebook as an extended contacts database, with lists being uber-groups. As a teacher to Korean students I pretty much rely on this, as I've yet to learn Korean and therefore am unable to read Hangul. Lists help me sort out who's current and who's graduated. As a social animal, lists help me to sort out business contacts, clubbing pals, ex girlfriends and friends of ex girlfriends.

The social internet is no longer a bunch of disparate islands. Everything is linked now - THIS is the real web of the 21st century. Actual websites are little more than the flotsam one finds on actual spider webs. Some are recent snares; some bigger, some larger. Some are ancient husks that nonetheless still have a presence of some kind. Myspace and Friendster fall in that category, with bells on.

I have Facebook, Twitter, Google+. I have Glassdoor, LinkedIn and a bunch of other minor connection apps. They're all connected... they all feed off one another, and what you do in one affects the others to some degree. Dave Bruce helped me out only today to fix my profile photo here - Gravatar is the image supplier, and it gets the image from your social networks.

I have contacts all over the world: New Zealand, Belgium, multiple US States, Canada, Africa, Thailand, Korea, Germany, France, Britain. Those contacts represent a huge spread of professions and capabilities, and most have even met me in person!

Supporting a super-network is what I use Facebook for. A day will come when I'll want to visit another country, look for another job, seek help in a given field, find talent for a startup... I don't think I'll have much of a problem. All thanks to Facebook and the social web.

In fact, MakeUseOf is part of that web. Google my name in quotes and MUO is on page 1. That's recruitment tool #1 taken care of!

I use facebook for as little as possible. Not terribly fond of them anymore. My facebook account is mostly reserved for registering with sites that only allow registration via facebook. I usually avoid those sites if I can though.

    October 11, 2012 at 3:28 pm

FB is a great tool, but lately it's been overloaded with advertisements and no longer interesting. I don't use FB much except for checking technology news feeds I subscribe to like this one. Like many other posters stated it's pretty boring and a time killer.

  19. Olga Stanica
    October 11, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Primarily for being in touch with my friends, especially those who live in other countries. Messenger and mail are obsolete...

  20. James Howde
    October 11, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Not a great deal. It gets used to organise, broadcast or follow events and that's about it.

To be honest there's a bit of a vicious circle. Since I never cared much about the account I let anybody who asked be my "friend". That means the default level is just full of the ramblings of the sort of people who want to be the friend of people they have never met and don't know; which in turn makes it less likely that I'm going to bother to log in on a regular basis.

I use facebook both for fun as for school.
There are several (better) options than a facebook group when it comes to working on projects, but I still prefer facebook. Why? Because EVERYONE uses it! (Almost) every student has an account, which means you can find them and add them to a group. Most of those people check their account (more than) once a day, which means it is a very fast way of communicating...

So it might not be the best option to do a lot of stuff, but because of it's accesibilty, I couldn't live without it....

Never really was an avid user of the site myself. I mostly use it for discovering what my friends are doing, which turns out to not be much.

But now it seems boring but it has become a habit to open a facebook tab whenever i open my browser. To be honest I don't really use Facebook. It's just there. Lately I have been seriously considering closing my account. I get far more out of Twitter and even Pinterest. The site has become a chore rather than somewhere nice to visit and I can go for days without bothering it. There are some nice groups on it that I will miss, but I think, overall, Facebook has become entirely unnecessary to me.

Well, I've used Facebook in more than one of those ways. I used to play games on it, since I had to try it out. Didn't really like it.
I sometimes(rarely) upload a picture on FB, but like I said, that's rare.
I DID upload some MUO articles, although they sadly didn't get any likes :(
I mostly chat with online friends and classmates. Not on a daily basis, but I sometimes do.

Finally, lately I've been following some online courses, in which we've made some student groups, including on Facebook. I'm an admin in one of them, so my daily task is to accept new students into the group and deleting occasional spam posts.

I think that last part's what I'm mostly doing on Facebook nowadays, I did meet a friend I hadn't talked to/seen in years, who added me on FB, but other than that, Facebook's pretty boring.

I log in to Facebook everyday. Of course I do all the mundane things first before moving onto other stuff. The most useful part of Facebook for me would be groups. As I am a student, groups help me connect with other students. We normally discuss about subjects, school and our experiences. We also help each other solve Physics and Math problems. Sometimes, we also hold some 'debates' where someone would randomly post a topic and the others will present our arguments for supporting or opposing it.

Other than groups, I follow a lot of Harry Potter themed pages. The admins of these pages are usually very active hence there will a lot to see everyday. They do quizzes, head cannons, photo-spams and Omegle hunts to engage the fans.

I use FaceBook to stay in contact with my friends and family in England. I live in Sweden and I know its easy to pick up the phone and call them but its not so easy to share photo's with all of them. FB simplyfies this allowing me to share my photo's with all of them and vice-versa. As already mentioned its great for reminding you who has a birthday, I am terrible when it comes to remembering things like that.

Facebook is rather boring for me these days. It seems that I only use it because otherwise I wouldn't know when birthdays and family gatherings are happening. One day I might muster the courage to delete my account altogether.

I can be named as an addict considering my usage, but really am not.

And as for usage, I mostly use FB to -
    > Pass time (Songpop, Memes)
    > Talk and share photos with friends.
    > Irritate friends by poking them :p

The people I need to stay in touch with are on G+ already. The rest that didn't convert I can still post things to since G+ posts go to peoples email inboxes anyway. Here's an old but good post about how to use G+:

I don't hate on FB users, I just don't see a point in using an inferior tool when there are much better alternatives (like using iOS over Android when Android is superior). It doesn't matter to everyone but for those that it does they already have moved on. I get enough entertainment from the people, subjects, & websites I follow on G+.

It's awesome to be able to watch a show then end up in a hangout about the show I am watching. I can't do that on FB without much more setup & knowing the people first... or at least "friend" them & hope they do it back

Too true. We get closer to each other with the help of technology but actually we are getting farther away.I deleted my facebook account because I did not need it.We talk less about ideas and more about people there. One of my friends went on a vacation just to relax himself. To get some space. To spend some quality time with himself. What actually happened was he ended up updating statuses on facebook and zero quality time with himself.Result: He came back feeling the same.
