Facebook Wants You to Start Shopping

Facebook is testing a dedicated Shopping feed which will deliver information of products on sale from different retailers. The idea is that rather than having to sift through random status updates and news stories to find products you’re interested in #Cheap: 12 Ways To Use Social Media To Find Great Shopping Deals #Cheap: 12 Ways To Use Social Media To Find Great Shopping Deals Saving money without leaving your favorite social networks. Is that possible? Read More , you can switch to the Shopping feed to see them all in one place.

The Facebook Shopping feed is currently being shown to a limited number of people to test the waters. But if even a fraction of those people end up buying more products as a result, Facebook is sure to roll it out to a wider audience. If you’re one of those already testing this out, let us know all about it in the comments below.

This is just one of a number of features Facebook is working on to get people buying more products through its pages. The ultimate aim is to launch a dedicated Buy button which would distill the whole process down to a single button press. Which would surely be a nightmare for bank managers the world over.

Playboy Kills Nudes, Because Internet

Playboy Magazine will no longer feature fully nude women, with Hugh Hefner and his cronies making the change next March. The reason for this unexpected change? Read More , which has, according to Playboy CEO Scott Flanders, rendered the very idea of printing pictures of nude women “passé at this juncture”.

Explaining why Playboy is making this change at this time, Flanders told The New York Times, “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.” Playboy.com hasn’t featured nudes since August 2014, and now the print edition is following suit.

This is all rather ironic given that the standard excuse for buying Playboy over the years has been, “I only read it for the articles”. And while there will still be a Playmate of the Month, she will no longer pose naked. Which means those articles will have to be amazingly written to hold the average man’s attention.

Pepsi Brands a Chinese Android Phone

Pepsi has licensed its branding to a Chinese phone manufacturer. The Pepsi P1 is a pretty standard Android handset, with a 5.5-inch screen, a 1.7GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel camera. Which really isn’t bad for the $205 asking price.

The only thing separating this from the pack is the over-the-top Pepsi branding. Which is the point. The manufacturer clearly feels plastering the Pepsi logo all over this phone will lead people to buy it over the competition. Which could actually work. Isn’t capitalism grand?!

Skip to the End of Call of Duty

Treyarch has made an odd decision with Call of Duty: Black Ops III; one seemingly inspired by Netflix Where Can I Find New Movies and TV Shows To Watch on Netflix? Instead, they can pick and choose missions at random, playing them out of order, or skipping straight to the end.

Jason Blundell, the game’s Campaign mode director, told Eurogamer:

“It gives [players] the flexibility to consume the content how they want. The unlocking level system is an archaic mentality we’ve had since we did bedroom development back in the day – you do this, then go on to the next one. If you see the end you’ll say ‘I need to understand this more’. When Netflix release House of Cards and do all the episodes, does everyone just jump to the end and go and play the last episode? Sure you can. But it’s about the journey, though, right?”

Watch Luke Skywalker Get Crushed

And finally, the Star Wars: Battlefront beta has been available for the last week or so, allowing Star Wars fans the world over to play a snatch of the game due to be released in November. One of the highlights is the ability to play as either Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker.

Unfortunately, these characters aren’t immortal, so while they’re harder to kill than the average Rebel grunt or Imperial stormtrooper, if they choose to get in the way of an AT-AT their days are numbered. Rest In Peace, Luke. The Force wasn’t quite strong enough with this one.

I actually think that changes in women's grooming fashion has had a lot to do with Playboy's somewhat less comfortable relationship with its models. Playboy used to be much more demure about what was photographed than it is now and there was an easy dividing line that most female-attracted persons could recognize. Over the last ~20 years, changes in grooming and attitudes have made that dividing point harder to find and modern Playboy photos aren't distinguishable from other high-gloss nude art photography (Domai, Met-Art, Hegre, et al.) that are not normally as discreet in their focus because that's how women are showing up on the day that they model.

I'm mildly interested to see if Playboy can have some sort of editorial renaissance from having the wider distribution of something like Esquire or Maxim.

I'm also amused by this because a friend of mine has a November photo shoot scheduled with Playboy which was supposed to be printed in whichever publication in the spring of 2016. She might be appearing at the end of an era or the beginning of the new one.
