Facebook has just rolled a new feature that allows users to fill their friends’ Facebook pages with emoticons. Well, maybe not the whole page, as that would be rather annoying, but you can leave a comment filled with all kinds of Facebook emotional goodness. Facebook has had emoticons available in the chat client for some time, and now you can brighten someone’s day (or annoy them to death, depending on their personality type) by leaving lots of emoticon comments too.

The keyboard shortcuts for using these emoticons are pretty standard, so anyone who has sent a smiley face in an IM service or text message should have little trouble figuring out how to leave emoticon comments. For example, to leave a smiley face, you can type :), :-), :], or =). If the mood strikes you, you can even send your friends a shark by typing (^^^). You just never know when your friends might need a little shark in their life, and Facebook is happy to give you that right.

You can get a complete list of emoticons from this site. It will tell you how to make all the happy little faces on Facebook with ease.

You do not need to enable anything on Facebook to use the new smileys. Simply go to a friends post, type the keyboard shortcut and you will have left an emoticon comment.

I now turn to you, our faithful readers; do you think this is a cool new feature for Facebook, or will you find emoticons in your comments annoying? Hit the comments section and let us know!

I think it's a great feature. Like anything else, one needs to decide how much is enough :-)
I wish it worked here too <3 ;-)

My friends developed an app that lets you see a list of all emoticons and many others on the Facebook page, on PC-gizmos.com site. http://www.pc-gizmos.com/gizmos/facebook-emoticons/

I find it annoying. I understand that some people might like it but if it's going to be in comments, it should at least be optional.

The main issue I have with it is that the interpretations of some emotes that I use are very different that what I use them as. The best examples are " >:( " and " :3 ". The first one I see as an angry face. But facebook's icon for it looks more like someone with a headache. And the second one I see as smiling, with perhaps a slightly mischievous air. The icon for it looks like a high creep.

It was annoying enough in facebook's messages but putting it in comments is too much. FACEBOOK. PLEASE MAKE THE EMOTICONS OPTIONAL.

I find myself regularly overusing emoticons in chat and sms but still they are welcome in FB comments :-) :-)

Is there any way to disable emoticons either from displaying as I type or from displaying entirely? I much prefer the text equivalents, and sometimes a valid character string gets turned into an emoticon by mistake.

I am of the same opinion as you do, if you consider that the man can say the same respect as you,,

I came across some pages where the comments were looking a bit different today. Took a second for me to realize that the Smileys aka Emoticons we use in the Comments and Chats had the actual graphical icons in the comments too. I also found this video:

Will be useful. If the tool exists in other media, why not on Facebook? Being boring or not depend of emoticons, depends on the user.

Vai ser útil. Se a ferramenta existe em outros meios, por que não no Facebook? Ser chato ou não independe dos emoticons, depende do usuário.

How to NOT make a smiley in a Facebook comment?

Suppose, I want to write a capital letter B immediately followed by a closing round bracket, and not a smiley --- what do I do?

My initial thought when this was introduced was "Now I can actually see proper faces and expressions instead of random punctuation marks!".. but then after a couple of days.. "Damn! It really IS annoying to have these emoticons when you tend to read comments".. So now I stick to random punctuation marks and alphabets :D

It depends, on everyday, social small talks I find then useful. They are sometimes necessary but often more disturbing when it is more serious discussions. Saying that, I do like the "plain text" emoticons better
