People familiar with data recovery or security know that simply deleting a file does not erase it from the hard drive. In fact, the regular deletion process only deletes the reference to that file but the file itself is not deleted. Eraser is a Windows-based open source utility that completely and securely deletes files from your computer so it becomes almost impossible to recover them.

It works by overwriting your files with random data so your original data is completely gone. One of the best features is that in addition to running the shredding process anytime you desire, you can schedule it to run daily, weekly or monthly. The software works with all versions of Windows and Windows server.

I've been using Eraser for years and I love it. One note for potential users. The Explorer integration includes the ability to erase your trash so you can "delete" files normally and, once you've passed the "oops" period, erase them.

One note for new users, Gutmann (or any of the real secure deletion strategies) takes forever. It is designed to defeat people with extremely sophisticated equipment, control of your HDD, and lots of time, money, and motivation. Using it will slow your PC down noticeably. People who are not on NSA's radar can use one of the quicker methods and avoid any slowdowns.
