How To Enable Facebook’s New “Timeline” Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

facebook logo 300x300 How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets ItYesterday Facebook announced a host of new features in what was described by industry observers as the biggest shakeup in Facebook’s history.¬† Most of these changes are obviously due to the emerging and growing threat from Google Plus, and one of the features that Mark Zuckerberg introduced was the radical redesign of the profile page.¬† It’s called the “timeline” and it could prove to be the most controversial change of them all.

Not everyone has the timeline design yet and you may have to wait up to several weeks for it.¬† However, if you’re curious about how it looks on your profile and you want to try it out now, then here is how to do it.

Please note however that your new timeline page will only be viewable to those who also have the timeline design page.  Those who still have the old page design will continue to see your old page design until the timeline feature goes mainstream for everyone.

Step One – Authorise Facebook Developer To Access Your Account

permission How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

The first step is to sign up as a Facebook developer. This involves enabling and authorising Facebook Developer to access your Facebook account.¬† Just go here and click “allow“.

Create A New App

fb2 How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

The next step is to create a new app.¬† Don’t panic, you’re not actually going to create one.¬† On this page, in the top right hand corner are two buttons – “edit app” and “create new app“.¬† Click “create new app“.

fb3 How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

This is the box that will come up next.¬† Simply put whatever you want into both boxes.¬† It doesn’t matter, as long as someone else hasn’t reserved the name.¬† It should also be at least 7 characters long.¬† As you can see, I put “coolmuoapp“which was the first thing that popped into my head.¬† Now click “continue“.

Clear The Captcha

fb4 How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

Now you have to prove you’re human and not an automated bot.¬† Enter the captcha and hit “submit“.

Define An Action

fb5 How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

OK, you’re almost finished.¬† In this final screen, the only thing you need to concern yourself with is the “Open Graph” link in the top left hand corner of the page.¬† Click on that and you will get this :

fb6 How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

All you have to do is choose an action in the first text field and choose an object in the second text field.¬† So I chose “watch” in the first text field and “movie” in the second.¬† Now press “get started“.

After processing that, Facebook will flip back to the Open Graph page (you may even get an error message) but you can now ignore all of that and head towards your Facebook profile.¬† Within a minute or two, you should receive an invitation to try out the timeline profile.¬† Click on that and you are in.¬† Here’s mine :

fb7 How To Enable Facebooks New Timeline Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

At the top, where I have chosen to upload a Highland cow (one of my favourite animals) is the area known as the “cover”.¬† This is where you can upload your own photo and really personalise your page.¬† You can let your imagination go completely riot and choose something that reflects your personality and who you are.

On the whole, the timeline profile is an interesting development but it is a radical departure from what the profile used to be like, so I am sure there will be lots of people who will vehemently hate the design.  But I would say give it a chance.

As the name “timeline” implies, you can move the slider back over every year you have had the Facebook profile and see all your old status messages.¬† I found it fascinating seeing what I posted years ago and laughing at some of the bad jokes that I posted (and some of the good ones too).

Let us know in the comments if you have any problems getting the timeline page, and also let us know if you either like or hate the new design.

How long does it take to get the invite? And will it be sent to my email or to my Facebook account?

Mark O’Neill

It should only take a couple of minutes but if everyone starts doing it at once, then Facebook might slow down the invites, so some patience might be required :-)

It will show up at the top of your Facebook wall in a little box.

Gini

I got the invite, but I click on it and it won’t let me do anything. and now I can’t view notifications or messages on my facebook.

Mark O’Neill

Invites are sent straight away to the top of your Facebook wall. ¬†But it’s quite possible that Facebook has now stopped people from doing this because they are about to roll this feature out to everyone within the next few days (if US news reports are to be believed). ¬†So my recommendation would be to wait another few days and see what happens.

Marco

i don’t received any invitation notification for timeline after a couple hours. Does it mean that facebook manually approves it? or it automatically notifies the update?.

Mark O’Neill

It’s now changed. ¬†You can now ask for Timeline and get it immediately by going to this page –¬†https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline

Mark O’Neill

The whole process has now been made a lot easier.  You can now request Timeline and receive it immediately by going to https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline

Andrewnette McElroy

I love it already!!

evylyn

What was wrong with it before?
With every “improvement” I get closer to binning Farcebook for good….

Mark O’Neill

There was absolutely nothing wrong with it before but Facebook seem to think that these are all “improvements” which users will like and appreciate. ¬†But obviously not everyone agrees with Mr Z.

This is just Facebook trying to persuade people not to leave for Google Plus by providing some extra features. ¬†We’ll just have to wait and see if the new features end up persuading people to stay or convincing them to leave.

Newone

How to roll back to ‘old’ Profile? Hmmm, I really don’t like this – it’s more pictoresque, true, but also harder to navigate through, and in general a lot messier :P

Mark O’Neill

see one of my older comments below for a possible way to roll back to the old version of the profile.

Newone

Yes, I did, sorry, for some reason newer comments didn’t show at the time :)

Prashandata

there is a way…

i just tried it and it works…

go to account settinggs >> security >> deactivate account

rolls to the end of the window… there is an option

>> permanently delete applications that you are the only developer

it will show the application you created to turn the timeline on,,,

>> delete…. and voila… you are back to normal :)

(oh… and you don’t have to deactivate your account to do that… only go to the dactivate account window… fb put it in that catagory…)

Cme5871

Awesome post!

Rodneydey

this is quite lovely…i love it. i think people will adapt to it easily.

Garlonwv

So are you able to switch back if you do not like the TimeLine?

Mark O’Neill

Switching back…hmmm….good question. ¬†I should have addressed this in the article.

I did a bit of digging around and according to Techcrunch :

It seems that if you login into Facebook on another machine, Timeline gets disabled automatically on all of your machines. With that said, it seems you can get back to your timeline….by navigating to http://www.facebook.com/YOURUSERNAMEHERE?sk=timeline

It looks as if that would be the only way to reverse it.  Log in on another machine and Timeline will get disabled.

Garlonwv

Thanks for the info and the prompt reply!

Danipants

I done this, and it didn’t change back :( Is that the only way you know how? I logged in on 3 different PC’s.. and nothing¬†

brononymous

just delete the app!

Joel_a_c

You have to delete the app you have created and automatically you ll have original facebook back. I just did it and get it. Greetings

Kassiexmarie

if you made an app to turn your facebook into the timeline just go back into facebook developer and delete the app you created. that’s what i did and my facebook is now back to normal.

Joel_a_c

me neither, I had logged in 4 different devices and still Timeline version. Do you know how to change back?
Thanks

La_rosye

go to the deactivate account and you’ll find the timeline application just at the bottom of the options… you can delete it and go back to normal…

Joel_a_c

Delete app by going into the developer app and editing the “app” you
made, it will give the option to delete it on the left side. After done that you will have back your face.. Greetings

Dennis Higgins

Great info – am also wondering if you can switch back. Thanks!

Mike Lemons

Personally the comments about google+ seem pretty unfounded…my experience with google+ is it is a little barren…there is nothing “game changing” about their social networking application that would make the masses just want to pick up and leave.

Many people have invested a good deal of time sharing their life on Facebook…I think it will take something more drastic than a cosmetic change of the application to make the masses leave.

I really like the visual interface of Facebook with the new timelines…I liken it to going from windows 3.1 to windows 95 and the wow moment that created…

Mark O’Neill

Give Google+ time. ¬†It’s early days yet for them and I’m sure there are still a LOT of things Google wants to add and accomplish with Plus. ¬†

Besides, even if it stayed the way it is right now, a lot of people like minimalism and no frills. Not everyone wants Mafia Wars or Farmville or constantly getting poked. ¬†And my impression so far has been that the quality of conversation on Google+ is extremely high. ¬†That’s what will keep people there and will make new people join.

Kemccoy56

Had no problems at all. ¬†Like it! ¬†Not sure all my “friends” and family will though!

Mark O’Neill

well if you like it, maybe you need to tell them what you like about it and show them the positive sides to it, instead of them dwelling on the negative aspects?

Kemccoy56

Agreed. ¬†Most just don’t want ANY change. ¬†Interesting posts – against something they haven’t even seen yet. ¬†I do try to encourage them and also to try Google+ but not many takers.

deelirium

Is that a Highland Bull?

Mark O’Neill

Yes that is a Highland cow.  I am Scottish so I love these creatures :-)

deelirium

I knew it. Saw one in St. Andrews while visiting in July. ;)

Mark O’Neill

Aren’t they great? ¬†I’d buy one and keep it in my garden if I could :-)

Rj Monisit

why i didnt receive the invite or invitation

Mark O’Neill

If you followed the steps above, then you should receive an invite on your Facebook wall within a few minutes.

If it’s not there, then re-do the steps here or perhaps Facebook has realised people are doing this and are subsequently slowing invites down.

Mavourneen Strozewski

Cool I did it and received my invite as soon as I reloaded my profile :) I Like the top image, but the rest looks a bit too much like the old myspace.

Mark O’Neill

Well since I never got into the whole MySpace thing, I can’t compare it. For some reason, MySpace really annoyed me and I stopped using it after a short time. Maybe it was the fact that a lot of pages auto-started music when you went to them :-)

Pauline Williams

the thing is that if you enable this, the only people that can see it are devolpers or those that enabled the timeline… yes you can enable it to tweak it so it is just right for launch day, but until then a very small number of people will see it.

Mark O’Neill

true but the method I just described is being spread all over the net and a lot of people are doing it to switch over.  So the more people that do this, the more that will see the new profile.

HyourinmaruZZ

I love it!…but how to change it back into usual??

Mark O’Neill

see one of my comments above about a possible hack, talked about by Techcrunch.  That seems to be the only way right now, as far as I can see.

Somanchi_v

the time line was amazing i’d liked it

Mark O’Neill

What parts did you like the best?

drawd

I did not receive any invitation.:(

Mark O’Neill

If you followed the steps above, then you should receive an invite on your Facebook wall within a few minutes.

If it’s not there, then re-do the steps or perhaps Facebook has realised people are doing this and are subsequently slowing invites down.

Jan B

is there going to be a “fee” of any sort for enabling timeline?

Mark O’Neill

Hi Jan, no it doesn’t cost anything. ¬†It’s all free :-)

Kat Hernandez Merto

I liked it for 20minutes.

Mark O’Neill

What finally turned you off about it?

Tony

Since the changes have started to be made my FB page has been crashing and I can only log on via a code they send me. I’m already thinking of moving to Google+, the changes are being pushed on us and that defeats the object of FB, doesn’t it?

Mark O’Neill

Your page is crashing? Wow, that’s a new one to me. Everyone I have talked to loves their new page and has had no problem with it so far.

Before you move completely to Google+, think of it this way. ¬†What’s to stop Google+ from “pushing” changes onto you? At the end of the day, these companies can pretty much do what they want because of their huge user base and we just have to roll with it if we want to use their service. Companies like Facebook and Google honestly don’t give a flying monkeys what people like you and I think. They may say they do in the name of good PR but honestly? Nah, they don’t care and would push on regardless.

So I would advise you to do what I am doing right now and not make a firm decision either way.  Instead, have an account on both sites and then sit back and see which way the wind blows before you fully commit yourself to one site.

Or delete all your accounts and go outside instead :-))  That was the advice someone gave me yesterday!!

iamlon

Im having a problem I did the right way I guess but my friends sees my profile just like the old way…. what should I do?

Mark O’Neill

Like I said in the article, at the moment, the only people who can see your new profile design are those who also have the new style profile.  If a person has the old design then they will continue to see your old design.

It will continue this way until the timeline feature goes mainstream to everyone in a week or two.

cyho88

i did it yesterday, but now my profile page wont load and has an error?

Mark O’Neill

That is really strange. ¬†I can only imagine it’s a gremlin in the system.

The best thing to do, I think, is to try and log in from another computer.  According to Techcrunch, this should then automatically disable your timeline page and put you back to the old design.  See if that works.

If not, try posting your problem on MakeUseOf Answers and see if one of our readers has a suggestion.

Facebook Timeline Covers

yap.. its working . nice share. i love FB timeline its cool

Will Radie

I am really loving the new style!

Also of note:

Please note: During the developer release, only other developers will be
able to see your new timeline. Everyone else will see your old profile.

?????????? ????????

Doesn’t work with Opera

Mark O’Neill

That’s not possible. Why wouldn’t it work in Opera?

Andrew Do

It does not, not yet at least. I had the invitation as soon as I logged in with firefox (after I did the steps ofc), so now I have it on firefox, but in Opera it’s still the old view.
There is a thing we can do, tho:
press F12 when on Facebook site, click Edit Site Preferences, go to Network tab and set Browser Identification option to “Maks as Firefox” – this should enable the Timeline view if you have accepted the invitation on firefox (as it did for me), or maybe it will give you an invitation right away on Opera after you do this.

Please add this to your post so that Opera users can benefit ;D

Baileyjovanna

i cant get pass the captcha..it keeps bringing me back to the “new app” box and it says that i need to verify either my phone number or credit card?

Mark O’Neill

Yes you need to verify your account before it will work.  I think if you enter your mobile phone number and enter the PIN number that is texted to you, then that is enough verification.

I might be wrong though because it’s been years since I’ve had to verify a Facebook account.

Mavimaonline

awesome,jus took bout 2minutes..kikiki coolstuff

Aashish Niroula

thank you..works perfectly!!!!!!!!!

How can I change the page I admin. for my business to the new timeline profile?

Mark O’Neill

Unfortunately, business pages cannot receive the timeline design at the moment. No doubt this will change at some point in the future but right now, it’s not possible.

missy

I use both my home pc and work pc for facebook. Does that mean I would undo the facebook timeline by logging into a 2nd comp?

Mark O’Neill

That used to be the case but not anymore. As of Friday, everyone is being permanently switched over to the new Timeline design.  So you can no longer switch back.

Crzynut14

Thanks for sharing, but how do I set is so people can comment on my wall? Now that I have the new timeline no one can post on my wall.

Thanks

Mark O’Neill

I honestly don’t know the answer to that. The best thing to do would be to post this question on MakeUseOf Answers and see if another reader knows the answer.

Sorry I can’t personally be of more help. :-(

Debanjan

Just got it. Now loving it.

Mandeep Walia

isnt this something like new orkut look??

Guran Walker

Interesting. Resented having to use mobile to set it up (surrendering to the One World Government again) but the Timeline feature is the first obvious ‘improvement’…I like the split columns. Fits more meaningful data in a given space. Waiting to see how it interracts with other users. “The same” you say? I mean visually. Will need to see how postings and comments come up on my new page. It was approved right away and the changes have taken place for my personal view…no delay at all.

Facebook Cover

Timeline profile is just awesome. You can customize it with a cool cover too.

Dejan

Thank you

Uyarfrnd

how to remove this effect to regular view????

Mark O’Neill

As of Friday, everyone is being permanently switched over to the new Timeline design.  So you can no longer switch back.

Jenniferalonso

Friday three weeks ago? Nothing happened. FB is still the same. Are the FB programmers forgetting to pull their heads out their booty and switch everyone over?

Tina

Did you try to log out and log back in?

Jenniferalonso

I actually can’t complete the final step to get Timeline early due to a lack of cell phone and I refuse to put in a credit card number for verification. That to me seems a bit much to ask just to see this shiney new Facebook that should’ve been completely switched over as of the beginning of this month.

Tina

Jennifer,

maybe there is another way. Unfortunately, I don’t know. I recommend asking a question on MakeUseOf Answers.

Gerald Zuckier

Well, that was going along pretty well until I got stuck between the tripartite hells of

“Before you can begin, you must specify a namespace for your app. You can do so by visiting your app’s summary page¬†and setting the app namespace there.¬†If you recently set your app’s namespace, wait a few minutes for the namespace to fully propagate to all Facebook servers.”

“Error
App Namespace cannot contain uppercase letters.”

and”ErrorUnable to update App Namespace: The App Namespace you requested is already taken.”when I try to change the namespace to lower case.

Mark O’Neill

It means that Facebook thinks that you have made an account in a fake name. What name and URL is your Facebook account under?

If Facebook has got it wrong, click on the appeal link and make your case to them.

Mark O’Neill

so you haven’t received an invite? ¬†All I can suggest is that you wait. Facebook is now switching everyone over to the new design automatically.

patrickinshiningarmani

i switched to timeline last oct 2, but until now, people still see a wall on my profile instead of the timeline, i know it would take 5 days before it would be available for the eyes of the pulic but today is 8th, what do you think is the problem, i clicked on “publish” ¬†right after switching to it, and if in case i didn’t then i can’t find it, not anywhere on the screen…

help!

Angela Alcorn

AFAIK it should work as soon as you’ve hit publish. You only need to wait a few days if you don’t publish immediately.

Victor Stanescu

Like it or not, the Timeline is coming and there is no escape! It’s better to be prepared.¬†
I did something similar myself, I wrote a 7 very easy steps guide on “How to get your shiny new Facebook Timeline now”.¬†
Find it here: http://www.vectorash.ro/enable-facebook-timeline/

PRANJAL METHI

thanx buddy…

Charleneroque03

can’t create timeline. :((( cause it says that my account can’t create app. please HELP! I want it badly..¬†

Charleneroque03

help me what to do… pls???// HUHUHU

Mark O’Neill

You need to have a verified account (which can be done by having Facebook send a SMS code to your mobile phone). Other than that, the process I went through above should work.

Jenniferalonso

Why after submitting the captcha, it’s asking for verification through a cell phone or a credit card? Sounds bogus to me.

Mark O’Neill

It’s not bogus. Facebook just wants you to verify your account. Choose the cellphone option, enter your number and they will SMS you a code which you need to enter into your account. ¬†Then it’s done.

Jenniferalonso

Don’t have a cell phone to do that and I sure as hell won’t be inputting any of my credit card numbers just to see a preview of what should already have been implemented with Facebook weeks ago. You should include the cell phone/credit card verification in your instructions so people are forewarned what is required to see the preview.

darthvaderyourfather

is the invitation required for other friends to see my new wall? coz right now i cant show it off? .______.

Mark O’Neill

Facebook is in the very slow process of moving everyone over to the new Timeline view. In the meantime, for anyone to see the timelines of other people, they will need to go through the above process themselves.

Irritating I know but that’s just the way it is, until everyone gets the same view.

digitfox

awesome dude

Ahmedrasel01

I can’t creat new app.when i creat new app then they say ¬†
You can no longer create apps because our systems indicated that your account may not be authentic. Facebook requires users to provide their real first and last names, and fake accounts are a violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR 4.1), even when used to host or test apps. Also note that maintaining multiple accounts, even if they are authentic, is also prohibited. If you would like to create a test user to test app functionality, you can do so here: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/test_users/. If you believe you have received this message in error, please submit an appeal: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact_us.php?id=140703502680919.)                    Please help me

Mark O’Neill

I honestly don’t know why they are saying that. Try signing up at the Developers link and see if that helps. If it doesn’t, click the appeal link and file an appeal with Facebook. ¬†If that all fails, then I guess you will need to wait until Facebook moves you over to the new Timeline view along with everyone else.

Sorry I can’t personally be of more help. :-(

Great article thanks ! Can’t wait to have it globalized.

On my side, I use http://www.facebook-covers.com to change my timeline cover.

Trying to proceed but keeps informing me Mobile not verified…. I click on it and it says… it is verified…. Help….

Tina

Cox,

if you are still having this issue, I recommend you to ask a question on MakeUseOf Answers.

Jdabecker

Deactivating and then re-activating your account also gets rid of the timeline.

Marina

I did it, everything worked except that it’s huge (size)! I feel like there’s some pb when i see screen shot of people’s timeline and mine which looks like it’s been enlarge (i can only see my profile picture and my cover in my computer screen).
Hope i’ve made myself understandable and you can help me

Mark O’Neill

Marina, I’m not sure what you mean, sorry. The cover picture is big yes but the size of it can’t be altered.

I’m afraid you will need to rephrase your problem in better English for me to fully understand so I can help you more effectively.

Jennifer

Which would be really great to use of Timeline was up and running! Still nothing happening there and many of us have been waiting since the beginning of October, when Facebook was supposed to have changed their format to Timeline.

Jennifer

That would be fantastic but somehow with all the trouble the Zucker’s been causing in the news, it’ll take a lot longer than just a few weeks to get everyone on FB switched to Timeline.

Deadfall34

I tried the timeline app activation, but until now i don’t have an invite. What must i do?

Pawix

It doesn’t work. why? :/

Mark O’Neill

It’s quite possible that Facebook has now stopped people from doing this because they are about to roll this feature out to everyone within the next few days (if US news reports are to be believed). ¬†So my recommendation would be to wait another few days and see what happens.

Dave

It is easy to manage it using http://www.facesoftware.com

Sunil

My friends list still shows up to all of my friends in timeline, although I have my setting set to show only me.

Mark O’Neill

I’m sorry, I don’t know how to answer that. ¬†It would be best to either search the Facebook help pages – https://www.facebook.com/help – or list this problem on MakeUseOf Answers – http://www.makeuseof.com/answers . ¬†Maybe somebody there knows why this is happening.

Yeh timeline is a great change and i suggest you start using
https://www.facebook.com/ , it will allow you to do a lot more on the new facebook timeline. You can also use this software to delete all you previous faceboot statuses based on date or yea etc. I really luv this free software :)

Anonymous

Sorry i posted a wrong link. The correct like to the software to help you achieve all these and a lot more is
http://www.facesoftware.com/ and its free.Enjoy

knaveris

I set up my app and timeline info through the developer app and have been waiting to get the invite on my homepage. I set everything up about 5 minutes ago or longer, but the invite still has not shown up?

Gerald Zuckier

ok started over and got it now

Angela Alcorn

I’m not sure that it’s possible to ever change it back. Soon they’ll be rolling it out to everyone anyway, so you’ll be stuck with it then.
