How To Enable Facebook’s New “Timeline” Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

Yesterday Facebook announced a host of new features in what was described by industry observers as the biggest shakeup in Facebook’s history.  Most of these changes are obviously due to the emerging and growing threat from Google Plus, and one of the features that Mark Zuckerberg introduced was the radical redesign of the profile page.  It’s called the “timeline” and it could prove to be the most controversial change of them all.

Not everyone has the timeline design yet and you may have to wait up to several weeks for it.  However, if you’re curious about how it looks on your profile and you want to try it out now, then here is how to do it.

Please note however that your new timeline page will only be viewable to those who also have the timeline design page.  Those who still have the old page design will continue to see your old page design until the timeline feature goes mainstream for everyone.

Step One – Authorise Facebook Developer To Access Your Account

The first step is to sign up as a Facebook developer. This involves enabling and authorising Facebook Developer to access your Facebook account.  Just go here and click “allow“.

Create A New App

The next step is to create a new app.  Don’t panic, you’re not actually going to create one.  On this page, in the top right hand corner are two buttons – “edit app” and “create new app“.  Click “create new app“.

This is the box that will come up next.  Simply put whatever you want into both boxes.  It doesn’t matter, as long as someone else hasn’t reserved the name.  It should also be at least 7 characters long.  As you can see, I put “coolmuoapp“which was the first thing that popped into my head.  Now click “continue“.

Clear The Captcha

Now you have to prove you’re human and not an automated bot.  Enter the captcha and hit “submit“.

Define An Action

OK, you’re almost finished.  In this final screen, the only thing you need to concern yourself with is the “Open Graph” link in the top left hand corner of the page.  Click on that and you will get this :

All you have to do is choose an action in the first text field and choose an object in the second text field.  So I chose “watch” in the first text field and “movie” in the second.  Now press “get started“.

After processing that, Facebook will flip back to the Open Graph page (you may even get an error message) but you can now ignore all of that and head towards your Facebook profile.  Within a minute or two, you should receive an invitation to try out the timeline profile.  Click on that and you are in.  Here’s mine :

At the top, where I have chosen to upload a Highland cow (one of my favourite animals) is the area known as the “cover”.  This is where you can upload your own photo and really personalise your page.  You can let your imagination go completely riot and choose something that reflects your personality and who you are.

On the whole, the timeline profile is an interesting development but it is a radical departure from what the profile used to be like, so I am sure there will be lots of people who will vehemently hate the design.  But I would say give it a chance.

As the name “timeline” implies, you can move the slider back over every year you have had the Facebook profile and see all your old status messages.  I found it fascinating seeing what I posted years ago and laughing at some of the bad jokes that I posted (and some of the good ones too).

Let us know in the comments if you have any problems getting the timeline page, and also let us know if you either like or hate the new design.

How long does it take to get the invite? And will it be sent to my email or to my Facebook account?

It should only take a couple of minutes but if everyone starts doing it at once, then Facebook might slow down the invites, so some patience might be required :-)

It will show up at the top of your Facebook wall in a little box.

Invites are sent straight away to the top of your Facebook wall.  But it’s quite possible that Facebook has now stopped people from doing this because they are about to roll this feature out to everyone within the next few days (if US news reports are to be believed).  So my recommendation would be to wait another few days and see what happens.

i don’t received any invitation notification for timeline after a couple hours. Does it mean that facebook manually approves it? or it automatically notifies the update?.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with it before but Facebook seem to think that these are all “improvements” which users will like and appreciate.  But obviously not everyone agrees with Mr Z.

This is just Facebook trying to persuade people not to leave for Google Plus by providing some extra features.  We’ll just have to wait and see if the new features end up persuading people to stay or convincing them to leave.

How to roll back to ‘old’ Profile? Hmmm, I really don’t like this – it’s more pictoresque, true, but also harder to navigate through, and in general a lot messier :P

            there is a way…

i just tried it and it works…

go to account settinggs >> security >> deactivate account

rolls to the end of the window… there is an option

            >> permanently delete applications that you are the only developer

it will show the application you created to turn the timeline on,,,

            >> delete…. and voila… you are back to normal :)

(oh… and you don’t have to deactivate your account to do that… only go to the dactivate account window… fb put it in that catagory…)

Switching back…hmmm….good question.  I should have addressed this in the article.

I did a bit of digging around and according to Techcrunch :

It seems that if you login into Facebook on another machine, Timeline gets disabled automatically on all of your machines. With that said, it seems you can get back to your timeline….by navigating to http://www.facebook.com/YOURUSERNAMEHERE?sk=timeline

It looks as if that would be the only way to reverse it.  Log in on another machine and Timeline will get disabled.

Personally the comments about google+ seem pretty unfounded…my experience with google+ is it is a little barren…there is nothing “game changing” about their social networking application that would make the masses just want to pick up and leave.

Many people have invested a good deal of time sharing their life on Facebook…I think it will take something more drastic than a cosmetic change of the application to make the masses leave.

I really like the visual interface of Facebook with the new timelines…I liken it to going from windows 3.1 to windows 95 and the wow moment that created…

Give Google+ time.  It’s early days yet for them and I’m sure there are still a LOT of things Google wants to add and accomplish with Plus.

Besides, even if it stayed the way it is right now, a lot of people like minimalism and no frills. Not everyone wants Mafia Wars or Farmville or constantly getting poked.  And my impression so far has been that the quality of conversation on Google+ is extremely high.  That’s what will keep people there and will make new people join.

If you followed the steps above, then you should receive an invite on your Facebook wall within a few minutes.

If it’s not there, then re-do the steps here or perhaps Facebook has realised people are doing this and are subsequently slowing invites down.

the thing is that if you enable this, the only people that can see it are devolpers or those that enabled the timeline… yes you can enable it to tweak it so it is just right for launch day, but until then a very small number of people will see it.

true but the method I just described is being spread all over the net and a lot of people are doing it to switch over.  So the more people that do this, the more that will see the new profile.

Since the changes have started to be made my FB page has been crashing and I can only log on via a code they send me. I’m already thinking of moving to Google+, the changes are being pushed on us and that defeats the object of FB, doesn’t it?

    | Like
    • Mark O'Neill September 24, 2011

Your page is crashing? Wow, that’s a new one to me. Everyone I have talked to loves their new page and has had no problem with it so far.

Before you move completely to Google+, think of it this way.  What’s to stop Google+ from “pushing” changes onto you? At the end of the day, these companies can pretty much do what they want because of their huge user base and we just have to roll with it if we want to use their service. Companies like Facebook and Google honestly don’t give a flying monkeys what people like you and I think. They may say they do in the name of good PR but honestly? Nah, they don’t care and would push on regardless.

So I would advise you to do what I am doing right now and not make a firm decision either way.  Instead, have an account on both sites and then sit back and see which way the wind blows before you fully commit yourself to one site.

Or delete all your accounts and go outside instead :-))  That was the advice someone gave me yesterday!!

It will continue this way until the timeline feature goes mainstream to everyone in a week or two.

That is really strange.  I can only imagine it’s a gremlin in the system.

The best thing to do, I think, is to try and log in from another computer.  According to Techcrunch, this should then automatically disable your timeline page and put you back to the old design.  See if that works.

If not, try posting your problem on MakeUseOf Answers and see if one of our readers has a suggestion.

It does not, not yet at least. I had the invitation as soon as I logged in with firefox (after I did the steps ofc), so now I have it on firefox, but in Opera it’s still the old view.
There is a thing we can do, tho:
press F12 when on Facebook site, click Edit Site Preferences, go to Network tab and set Browser Identification option to “Maks as Firefox” – this should enable the Timeline view if you have accepted the invitation on firefox (as it did for me), or maybe it will give you an invitation right away on Opera after you do this.

Please add this to your post so that Opera users can benefit ;D

Interesting. Resented having to use mobile to set it up (surrendering to the One World Government again) but the Timeline feature is the first obvious ‘improvement’…I like the split columns. Fits more meaningful data in a given space. Waiting to see how it interracts with other users. “The same” you say? I mean visually. Will need to see how postings and comments come up on my new page. It was approved right away and the changes have taken place for my personal view…no delay at all.

I actually can’t complete the final step to get Timeline early due to a lack of cell phone and I refuse to put in a credit card number for verification. That to me seems a bit much to ask just to see this shiney new Facebook that should’ve been completely switched over as of the beginning of this month.

            Jennifer,

maybe there is another way. Unfortunately, I don’t know. I recommend asking a question on MakeUseOf Answers.

Well, that was going along pretty well until I got stuck between the tripartite hells of

“Before you can begin, you must specify a namespace for your app. You can do so by visiting your app’s summary page and setting the app namespace there. If you recently set your app’s namespace, wait a few minutes for the namespace to fully propagate to all Facebook servers.”

    “Error
App Namespace cannot contain uppercase letters.”

and”ErrorUnable to update App Namespace: The App Namespace you requested is already taken.”when I try to change the namespace to lower case.

It means that Facebook thinks that you have made an account in a fake name. What name and URL is your Facebook account under?

If Facebook has got it wrong, click on the appeal link and make your case to them.

so you haven’t received an invite?  All I can suggest is that you wait. Facebook is now switching everyone over to the new design automatically.

i switched to timeline last oct 2, but until now, people still see a wall on my profile instead of the timeline, i know it would take 5 days before it would be available for the eyes of the pulic but today is 8th, what do you think is the problem, i clicked on “publish”  right after switching to it, and if in case i didn’t then i can’t find it, not anywhere on the screen…

    help!

AFAIK it should work as soon as you’ve hit publish. You only need to wait a few days if you don’t publish immediately.

Like it or not, the Timeline is coming and there is no escape! It’s better to be prepared.
I did something similar myself, I wrote a 7 very easy steps guide on “How to get your shiny new Facebook Timeline now”.

You need to have a verified account (which can be done by having Facebook send a SMS code to your mobile phone). Other than that, the process I went through above should work.

Why after submitting the captcha, it’s asking for verification through a cell phone or a credit card? Sounds bogus to me.

It’s not bogus. Facebook just wants you to verify your account. Choose the cellphone option, enter your number and they will SMS you a code which you need to enter into your account.  Then it’s done.

Don’t have a cell phone to do that and I sure as hell won’t be inputting any of my credit card numbers just to see a preview of what should already have been implemented with Facebook weeks ago. You should include the cell phone/credit card verification in your instructions so people are forewarned what is required to see the preview.

Facebook is in the very slow process of moving everyone over to the new Timeline view. In the meantime, for anyone to see the timelines of other people, they will need to go through the above process themselves.

Irritating I know but that’s just the way it is, until everyone gets the same view.

I can’t creat new app.when i creat new app then they say
You can no longer create apps because our systems indicated that your account may not be authentic. Facebook requires users to provide their real first and last names, and fake accounts are a violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR 4.1), even when used to host or test apps. Also note that maintaining multiple accounts, even if they are authentic, is also prohibited. If you would like to create a test user to test app functionality, you can do so here: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/test_users/. If you believe you have received this message in error, please submit an appeal: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact_us.php?id=140703502680919.)                    Please help me

I honestly don’t know why they are saying that. Try signing up at the Developers link and see if that helps. If it doesn’t, click the appeal link and file an appeal with Facebook.  If that all fails, then I guess you will need to wait until Facebook moves you over to the new Timeline view along with everyone else.

Sorry I can’t personally be of more help. :-(

Hope i’ve made myself understandable and you can help me

Marina, I’m not sure what you mean, sorry. The cover picture is big yes but the size of it can’t be altered.

I’m afraid you will need to rephrase your problem in better English for me to fully understand so I can help you more effectively.

Which would be really great to use of Timeline was up and running! Still nothing happening there and many of us have been waiting since the beginning of October, when Facebook was supposed to have changed their format to Timeline.

That would be fantastic but somehow with all the trouble the Zucker’s been causing in the news, it’ll take a lot longer than just a few weeks to get everyone on FB switched to Timeline.

It’s quite possible that Facebook has now stopped people from doing this because they are about to roll this feature out to everyone within the next few days (if US news reports are to be believed).  So my recommendation would be to wait another few days and see what happens.

I’m sorry, I don’t know how to answer that.  It would be best to either search the Facebook help pages – https://www.facebook.com/help – or list this problem on MakeUseOf Answers – http://www.makeuseof.com/answers .  Maybe somebody there knows why this is happening.

I’m not sure that it’s possible to ever change it back. Soon they’ll be rolling it out to everyone anyway, so you’ll be stuck with it then.
