Jack Cola, I just realized I was looking over the “Import mails and contacts” section instead of “check mail using POP3″. Now my gmail is working well just like what you’ve said.

Hi Rika, where does it say that?
I have Gmail downloading my Hotmail emails via POP3, since before I wrote this article, and it still downloads my emails from Hotmail. So yes, the POP3 will do the trick and runs smoothly.

Since gmail said that mails from hotmail will be kept imported withtin the next 30 days, for all you that have been using it for a longer period have you found it stopped importing or will it run smoothly by the POP3 trick?

Hi James,
I am not entirely sure about this. Since you are still logging in to download your emails, I would say no. But just to be on the safe side, I recommend logging in once in a while just to make sure.

does anyone know if collecting my hotmail via POP on my Gmail account will keep my hotmail account alive?

ie: I think i have to sign in to hotmail every 30 days to keep it active. Will this “collection” method through gmail keep it alive so i don’t have to sign in any more?

Hello, as I said, I am not a Yahoo user so sorry, that I can’t be much of an assistants. But for me, the account I am trying on is about 5 or so years old. I go to Options -> Mail Options -> POP & Forwarding, just as the URL you gave me has in the third picture. When I go to setup or edit, it goes to the old theme, which allows me to make the changes.

If it doesn’t work, do what the article says to change your preferred content.

Sorry that I can’t be more of assistance, as I am not a Yahoo user.

Hey Jack,

Thanks for a quick reply. Basically what you gave me was because you have already got POP-Forwarding activated in your account. When I go into options I find “add or edit an account” and not “Set up or edit and account”. For that you need to change your Yahoo service.

Hi Abhijeet, I am not a Yahoo Mail user, but I do have an account and this is what I found.

“We’re still tweaking the Yahoo!7 Mail POP & Forwarding option. Temporarily you’ll need to access it through the Yahoo!7 Mail Classic interface. But, rest assured, any changes made will take effect once you’ve reloaded the Yahoo!7 Mail.”

So if you are using the new interface, you have to go to the old one. To access the POP settings, go to options, and click POP & Forwarding. You will then see a small link saying to configure the settings. This URL may work http://popfwd.mail.yahoo.com/pf/PopFwd?.done=http://au.f584.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Options&rand=1249782902

In there, you can click forwarding. I think it works to all email accounts, and not just Selected ones like Hotmail does.

You can also set up POP so you can use a desktop client such as thunderbird (see part 2) or to setup in Gmail to download mail.

Dude, where were you till now….. Thanks a lot buddy.. Its cool.. Any suggestions to retrieve Yahoo mails. Somebody told me to change the service to Yahoo Asia and you will get free POP and Forwarding service. But it isn’t there. Please help us out with that also…. and even for AOL.in

That’s an even better way to do it. But Hotmail just makes things complicated. If anyone still uses Hotmail for their Mail Client, I suggest that you go to the now non Beta Gmail. (Gmail removed the Beta Tag in the past 12 hours)

Hotmail rolled out POP access to different countries at different times. The only things I can suggest is that it isn’t at your location (but it should be everywhere by now) or your settings are incorrect. Make sure your have set the correct port number and used your full email address as your username.

POP3 Settings:
POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

I am not sure what is happening there. Just make sure your settings are correct. You can also retry manually entering the details again by going to settings –> Accounts — Send Mail As (in Gmail). If you have already set up forwarding, click the check now button in Gmail Account Settings and see if the email verification is there. This is why I moved from Hotmail to Gmail because Hotmail was giving me so many issues with POP.

Well, I also merged my yahoo mail, hotmail and work email to my gmail. All perfect, the only thing is that Hotmail doesn’t seem to like Gmail’s confirmation email to be able to send mail from Gmail using my Hotmail address. Iv’e tried resending it many times, but it just doesn’t arrive.

How did you do it?

When i do this it says ‘Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password.Please contact Microsoft’s support team for more information on POP access. Server returned error: “authentication failed”‘

I did this one month ago for my girlfriend, who also uses both Gmail and Hotmail, and it was very easy to set everything up with just a few clicks, including the split part you’re going to explain next time.

Now she’s very happy because Gmail manages her Hotmail spam much better than Hotmail does, and she doesn’t need to worry about it anymore. And what’s more: if you send an e-mail from Gmail using the Hotmail address, nobody will add any advertisement at the end. Bye bye to those stupids ads!
