I never really saw the point of a desktop like system based within a web browser and in fact as many people have pointed out the browser actually adds a limiting factor to what can be achieved. I think may of the web based desktops seem to have taken the approach of "because we can do it we will" rather than asking the all important questions "what's the point of an online desktop and how best to deliver one that really is useful?"

But then came along Cosmopod, GoPC and Desktop On Demand. All fall into the same category and IMHO offer real online desktops, of real value.

I've toyed with all 3 as they all use NX clients. There are so many people who have no idea or inclination of what the usefulness of an online desktop is and to them I would simply say that whatever you think of the web based desktops don't put these 3 into the same fold and don't knock them till you've tried them. Really.

Replying on toad's comment.

I've tried it. It works really well. The download speed is quite fast considering the big files are stored online. You also can install the setup file on your usb drive and use it on any computers.

I see you mentioned Cosmopod but you couldn't try it because of the NX Client install?

I think you really can access Cosmopod using a Portable NX Client I found. I haven't tried it on a totally locked down PC, but I'm thinking it should work fine.

See this blog for details and screen shots.

Thanks for the great article.

www.gopc.net is by far the best I've seen.
A full desktop like Microsoft based on Linux allowing Word, Excel Powerpoint files and hosting the new Zimbra mail system from Yahoo, amongst other things. You can install a client locally or download a java applet at runtime. Its free but you have to pay something to get more stuff.
