The Simple Guide on How The Internet Works (DOWNLOAD)

The web’s place in our daily lives is undeniable. We can now access the Internet from our home computers, office, laptops and our phones. But even with this close intimacy many people still aren’t entirely sure what the Internet is and how it really works.

We aim to change that with MakeUseOf’s latest PDF guide, “How The Internet Works.” This guide, by Taty Sena, explores the hardware, software and organizations that power the modern Internet. You’ll learn about everything from the history of the Internet to the organizations that make it possible today. If you read MakeUseOf you probably use the Internet every day, so educate yourself. You don’t need to know how the Internet works to use it, of course, but that doesn’t mean anyone can’t benefit from a quick overview.

(Tip: after downloading, drag the PDF file to iTunes to read this guide in iBooks!)

This guide gives a great overview of the Internet and how it works, including:

  • The history of the web
  • How information is transferred
  • What DNS servers do
  • The languages of the web, including HTML, java and more
  • Current Internet trends
  • How the web changed the world

IE7? Why are you using such a poor browser? At least get and use another safe browser and your problems will be resolved and update it to 8 if you have to. You may not like FireFox then use Safari as that is usually okay with most sites. Opera although good isn’t so good on viewing some sites, especially if you have to fill forms.
I shall download it at night as I have a limit to my downloads and usage.

    • SubgeniusD

With previous Opera releases I did have site viewing issues, infrequently but enough that I was sending site problem reports every couple days (under Help in main menu). But with Opera 11 there have been so few that now its maybe once every couple weeks or so. Auto logins were also inconsistent but now almost always work along with form fill.

Find a new guide here every ten days!

This won’t download on IE8,either. I get the same results as Rg.
And there’s something about having to be on FaceBook – FaceBook I do not like.

    • jhpot

Did you try right-clicking and saving the file to your desktop? There’s no reason this shouldn’t be working for you.

  • Cwfitch

I don’t use Facebook and don’t want to.

    • jhpot

There’s no need to use Facebook to download this manual; the link above is a direct one. Download away!

You should also note that you can download any of our manuals with an email subscription; I’m also not a big fan of Facebook and made sure of this.

  • Ankit

this is not fraud..open in firefox or refresh chrome page

sheesh, is so difficult to test a posted guide before gettingh it download? And is so difficult to post also some more ampler information on what one would be downloading?

  • Kir

It seems you need to log on to Facebook, and push the LIKE – button for MUO, in order to be able to download.

Nicely done. Some good research done here. And it made me feel OOOLD. I still remember having to hit google.stanford.edu!

    Couple of things.

    * UUCP probably deserves a paragraph. For many years, the classic uucp bang path address was the predominant way to send an email to someone.

    * IPv6 probably deserves a whole page. :) The original RFC was written in 1995. With the issue of ipv4 exhaustion finally starting to hit mainstream media sources, it’d be good for people to know something of the history of it.

    “How the Internet works”…
To what group of people was this aimed? The info is rather superficial, which almost all makeuseof people would know (except some of the history (3 pp). For those who wouldn’t know the history at all (or very little) they wouldn’t be on makeuseof to find the article.
I just don’t get who this was targetting. I expected to be enlightened beyond what I know from >15 years online. A waste of 30 pages + toner.

  • Srtools1980y

thanks for all these nice works.

  • SubgeniusD

AlanInVancouverBC’s comment was not offensive or particularly strong and contained no inappropriate language. Just dismissive of the value of the download — but that was just an opinion. I’m surprised it was removed.

BTW I’ve had network training, know the history of the Arpanet and think the guide was very well done. Thanks and looking forward to the next one :)

Oops – replied from in box mistook an earlier deleted comment that followed my original post as Alain’s . Odd that 8 or 9 subsequent posts haven’t hit my inbox… Sorry.
