DOWNLOAD Hard Drive Of The Future: 101 Guide To Solid State Drives

You may have heard a lot of talk about Solid State Drives (SSDs) recently. In the last six months or so they’ve really taken the mid-range to high end computing world by storm. If a manufacturer decides to include a solid state drive in their computer, they’ll make sure that you know it’s there. But what are they?

Find out in Hard Drive of the Future: Your Guide to Solid State Drives. This guide, from Lachlan Roy, outlines everything you need to know about the future of storage technology. You’ll learn their history and what to look for when shopping for one.

Remember: if you own a flash drive, you own a solid state drive. Soon all computers will use the exact same technology for internal drives.

This amazing guide explains:

  • The history of solid state drives
  • Kinds of SSDs on the market
  • How SSDs compare to conventional drives
  • Whether you should buy an SSD
  • Things to look out for when shopping.

  • GUEST April 11, 2011

    No way to download

    • Peter Climes April 11, 2011

This happened a few times before. I thought it was just me, but it seems the notice goes out before there is actually anything for us to download.
Come on guys..sort this out please. Doesn’t do either your image or rep any favours.

I use noscript to filter what has access to my machine. After temporarily allowing scripts on this page I see that there is a script for just about every ad and social networking site that currently exists. While I admire the time it must have taken to accumulate all these relationships, when I realized that I needed to log into facebook -which I have avoided like the Black Death – just to download a possibly useful (maybe) pdf I decided that makeusof is notuseful :-) Bye Bye

  • Newdave61 April 11, 2011

Same with the iPad2 giveaway – no instructions on the linked page.

  • Eversmilinggoutham April 11, 2011

There is a download link at top of the page just below the MAKEUSEOF title

  • Jdwilson307 April 11, 2011

Do you really have to go through Facebook to get a download these days?

  • Rui Sousa April 11, 2011

    NO COMMENTS !!!

  • Wayne Halliday April 11, 2011

To add to the throng, where is this PDF link?

  • Chrisrsherwood April 11, 2011

I am not giving another Facebook app access to my info just to download a pdf that probably doesn’t contain any useful info. Is anybody else sick of this marketing ploy???

    • Face-booked April 11, 2011

Yes. I’ve avoided the social media scene for a very long time and choose to keep avoiding it.

  • Frank Koziol April 11, 2011

  • Enigma_as April 11, 2011

This is a fraud and a good publicity-trick. There is no link for download

    • James Bruce April 11, 2011

This is a technical error. Please check now, I assure you this was no trick.

  • Davidshanz April 11, 2011

The link is near the top of this page!!!

  • Tcom-master April 11, 2011

I’m tired of Makeuseof not having the links to go with the email. Maybe I need to send their email to Spam????

    • Lospopularos April 11, 2011

Seems like for some ppl there is glitch after all, I downloaded it no problem (I’m using Safari on iMac OSX).

  • AlfieWonder April 11, 2011

Facebook? Really? A teenager hangout for kids and adults who can’t let go of their teen years is the only way to get a Tech PDF? Ugh

  • Dfdoler April 11, 2011

I’m sorry, but if I have to go through FACEBOOK to download any guide, then I just have to pass on your offer. This is not the same as FREE. At this time I am cancelling
MAKE USE OF. There are lots of good tech sites that aren’t joined at the hip to any social networking sites.

    • Arjun Bajaj April 11, 2011

you can also download my putting your email address somewhere….

    • James Bruce April 11, 2011

You do not need to join facebook. This technical error has been resolved, I take full responsibility.

  • Arjun Bajaj April 11, 2011

this is the download link : goo.gl/4fK4N

  • Profpbush April 11, 2011

I have to agree – this is cheesy. And despite whatever defense is made, making your audience jump through hoops is no way to earn their respect or their return to your site. It runs contrary to advertising technique, as you’re amply demonstrating here by losing audience members.

I know what you’re trying to do by focusing on “likes” (Facebook *is* a powerful advertising tool), but turning people off is a self-defeating concept.

    • Aibek April 11, 2011

this is just stupid. If you have been reading MakeUseOf for a long time you should know that we always post direct download link on each PDF announcement. What happened today was a technical glitch.

  • Peter Climes April 11, 2011

Well, I just downloaded it over at facebook..from link in the leftside menu pannel..but I won’t be visiting this site anymore..this sucks! Why the hell should I be made go elsewhere to download something that is supposed to be from this site..without having to visit facebook!

For what it’s worth..you folks here at MakeUseOf should know better than come up with a crappy stunt like this..and I thought you were all about quality and offering a good service! I won’t be back and am now off to unsubscribe from you mailing list..and I’m sure I won’t be alone either..

    • James Bruce April 11, 2011

link is back, this was a technical error

  • Akshay Lakhmani April 11, 2011

U can download at top of the page.U see download button in long blue box.
But u have to login and share the makuseof in facebook.

    • Peter Climes April 11, 2011

Why do we *have* to log in and share on facebook..when some of us don’t even use facebook! When I subscribed here there was no mention of having to post or “share” over on facebook in order to get what they are offering for free!

It’s supposed to be a MUO guide..not a MUO / Facebook guide..Facebook should not come into it..and we should only be asked to visit Facebook and *share* if we want to..not made to do so in order to get these reports!

If I want to spread the word about something I like or think is worthy of praise, then it will be to those I know and by the means I want. I take offense at being made do something I would not usually do..as in using facebook.

Still, I guess it is their right to do what they want, but it’s not me and that’s why I am jumping the MUO ship.

      • James Bruce April 11, 2011

You should see the download link at the bottom of the post now, without any facebook hoops to jump through. Apologies for the error.

  • name April 11, 2011

Count me out too… if I wanted FaceBook I would have been on it already. You can assume that “everyone” is on it, but you are wrong. Whether or not a large enough percentage of your visitors use FaceBook to make you not care about those of use who don’t is yet to be seen…

  • Rob Smith April 11, 2011

This sucks, if this is the game you are playing, I don’t want to play it.
I am Not using MakeUseOf any more!

    • Aibek April 11, 2011

There was a temporary issue on our server which resulted some of the latest posts go blank.

In regards to facebook, we DON’T require users to join the Facebook to download the latest guides.
That requirement goes into place only about a month after the guide was announced. This is to make sure that everyone who wants it gets it for FREE via direct download link.

Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused you.

NoScript ftw. No link, no scripts for places I don’t want to go & crap I don’t want. Makeuseof s/n ratio is way too much dross for the few worthwhile items.

  • Rob April 11, 2011

I thought it was just me.

  • James Bruce April 11, 2011

Link is back. This was my fault, we were adjusting some back-end codes. Please don’t let it tarnish your enjoyment of MakeUseOf. We are dedicated to offering quality content for free.

  • name April 11, 2011

No it’s not just you Rob. Time to put an end to this crap NOW! Everybody let ‘em know until they change this ridiculous policy. And also go back and “like” every comment by those who agree with us! ;>)

  • Robert Patterson April 11, 2011

Are you going to put a link so we can download this?

    • James Bruce April 11, 2011

It should be there now. Please refresh the page.

  • ABc April 11, 2011

This is a good try… Like on FB? For what? I would read that guide first. Then I will be able to decide if I like it or not.

    Spam spam

Holy Cow, all this hostility. ???

I don’t understand the problem. ? No scam!

There are so many different Operating Systems, Apple, Linux, Different Windows Versions, Smartphones, PPC’s. Different Service Packs, Different browsers.

    INSTRUCTIONS:
You can right click the download link. I downloaded it in both Chrome and IE7 If you click the link it may open in your browser. Depends on whether you use browser extensions or toolbar helpers.

In IE7 it displays the pdf in the browser. To save it to your hard drive you click the upper left icon of the floppy drive, save as, and save it to your hard drive. Try it a different browser.

I just wrote up several ways people could get the link over an hour ago and it didn’t show up here. ??

    • James Bruce April 11, 2011

could be becuase it was placed in a moderation queue. I see your post a few below this one, thank you for helping ppl out there. It was a technical problem on our end causing the issue, but has been resolved now.

  • readingnthedark April 11, 2011

Hi not sure what the problem is or if it was resolved but all I had to do was right click on the Download text and then choose save link as. I use Google Chrome and have never had a problem. I also haven’t had to login to facebook for anything here and I don’t have a problem with it since I use facebook all the time for important things like networking. Please don’t be haters here. That doesn’t solve anything. MUO does a great job and I appreciate all the stuff I have learned from them.

  • Me April 11, 2011

It may be worth noting that if you have upgraded to firefox 4 then your link tp adobe reader may be disabled as I think there is no verion available yet for 4.0. Secondly you need to save link as on the words
DOWNLOAD Hard Drive Of The Future: Your Guide To Solid State Drives
    hope this helps

  • Lospopoularos April 11, 2011

  • Harry Nemyer April 11, 2011

To Make Use Of. you have these giveaway’s from time to time which is great but how do we know who won and when? I have never seen anything further after we apply to the giveaway, what gives?

    • ænon1mus April 11, 2011

Harry, that’s simply not true. The winners are always announced after the giveaway ends — perhaps not immediate but they are always made known.

  • Dav532000 April 11, 2011

Nice guide, all Pc in the future will/should have a SSD installed simply for the OS if nothing else, Windows boots much faster, will probly put one in my desktop when I can afford one.

    • jhpot April 12, 2011

They’re getting cheaper all the time; you’ll be able to afford it sooner than you think.

  • Justine Dougherty April 11, 2011

I am not able to access FaceBook at work. I would like to download the pdf HELP

  • Kozzy April 11, 2011

Your download makes one think that you must join facebook. I have neither need nor desire for any “social networking product” I was about to put MakeUseOf in my garbage pile. Don’t force us, if we want it we can figure out how to get it…

    • jhpot April 12, 2011

There are tons of ways to get our manuals without Facebook. They’re all on Scribd long before they’re posted anywhere else, even the main blog. Alternatively, if you bookmark our download page after signing up for our newsletter you’ll have another way to get at the manuals early; sometimes even a month early.

Finally, the announcement posts always have clear links. Like this one. We reward our loyal readers.

  • Mike Five April 13, 2011

04/13 How long is temporary going to be?

  • Lospopularos April 11, 2011

Hi Aibek, ur doing a great job, but change that rubber-stamp line “Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused you” koz were already sick of it and it smax of used car sales, sorry, i dont mean to be ruff, but put something from urself:)
