I’ve used this service for years.  I’ve been mostly happy with it.  Now I know the old adage, you get what you pay for, and I’m paying nothing.  I’m still a little upset that Google Apps users are the very last to get the cool Google stuff.  We’re still to this day waiting for Profiles, Buzz, and +1.  And while we can add more storage for Docs and Picasa Web, we cannot add more to Gmail.

I really hope Google puts their Apps users at least on par with the general public.  And since we’re more likely to be Google fans (paid storage, Android users, Google Books buyers, etc.) they’d put us first instead of last.

You got Google wrong , their target is not to cherish premium users at all. In fact free users have almost the same quality as premium , and I appreciate that the most on google. It’s the only company that doesn’t make a VISIBLE difference.

For example I am a big fan of their blogging platform. Unlike wordpres.com , blogger.com lets you use free domains too , such as .tk , .co.cc , .co.nr , while wordpress.com allows such features only after you have premium membership.

I wish this was available four years ago when I used GAFYD for my first domain. Figuring out how to config the cnames, mx records, etc. was a royal pain. But it was worth it. Now I have 5 domains using GA(FYD) including one I set up for my dad’s mom & pop shop.

Will this affect any websites I currently have at my domain?

    • jhpot June 13, 2011

None; your A Record will not change during this process. What this will affect is any email you have on the domain (you’ll be changing the MX Records). You can also add some C Records (eg, mail.yourdomain.com), but that’s optional.

If I already have more then 10 email accounts at my domain, will I have to delete a few to get down to 10 to still be included in the Free account with Google Apps?

From the PDF:  ”The bundle of apps that can be tied to your website is known as Google Apps, and is completely free for up to 10 users”

        • jhpot June 13, 2011

Here’s the thing: you can only have ten accounts for free. If you have more than ten users, you will need to pay (very little) for Google Apps.

But you can have as many email addresses as you want, thanks to a catch-all function and the “Groups” function. So if there are under ten people but a need for over ten email addresses, you’re set.

          • Jrblack10 June 14, 2011

I have used Gmail for years… since the time when you had to be invited…  I don’t remember anything about catch-all or Gruops function.  Is this something available once you setup Gmail through your domain?

          • jhpot June 14, 2011

That’s a function of Google Apps on your domain. You’ll find out how in the above manual, and more. Check it out!

Ok, one last question…  So what real benefit of me creating a Google Apps account and using my domain?  Why do all this, if I am already using Google email, docs, calendar and sites?  I do already have my domain, but email spam protection is awful so I have Gmail get my email from my domain server.  All the apps, still look like Google apps, my unique domain just redirects to Google URL’s.  Don’t get me wrong, I have set up a test account with a sub-domain on my domain and it all works quite nice…  Just wondering what my net benefit is.  Wondering if it is worth setting up other accounts for other remote families.

          • jhpot June 15, 2011

Simply put: you can get email, calendar and docs up and running, on your own domain, very quickly. It’s much faster than setting up the domain to receive email and then sending it to a Gmail account. Additionally, administrators have control over accounts on the domain that wouldn’t be possible in a typical Gmail setup.

The appeal is mostly for businesses, I think. But it’s hard to match the value of this setup.

    Hello Justin,

I’ve read your book, it’s excellent; thanks.

My question is, if one is managing a website for a school, do I have create gmail account  manually for all the students (hundreds of them) or there’s a way to automate it?

Thanks.  I really appreciate what put in the book.  And I thank MakeUseOf for the gift.
