You’ve taken some time off. You’ve packed your bags, stuffed them in the car, and you’re off and away. The sun is shining, the grass is green, and you finally get to enjoy yourself away from work. An hour passes, and you’re bored. Out comes the phone, and here come work emails which have already started to accumulate. And there goes your peace of mind. Or does it go down differently?

Smartphones made email easily accessible from literally anywhere. It’s always waiting in your pocket, and everything’s just a tap away. So do you do your best to disconnect on trips? Do you stay connected only if you must? Or do you habitually check your emails no matter where you are?

If I'm on a vacation, a real one in which I'm not obligated to respond to emails and phone calls, I'd just turn off my work email notification

I also switch to edge connection when I am on vacation because I want to enjoy the vacation rather than looking at the phone all the time. When data connection is lower you don't feel like using the phone because it is a pain.

In such a vacation I'd only check the mail once I'm back in the office building.

Since I'm long retired, I have no business pressure, and my surviving friends don't generate much social action any more. But if I'm going to keep in touch with what's going on in the world, I'll take a computer along on vacation and when I fire it up (even if only for the local weather) I swill check my email from force of habit.

No, I do not check my email. I go on vacation to get away from such annoyances as email. twits or IMs.

I don't get bored on my vacations :-)
I do check my email before I go to bed and in the morning, though.

Here's my take on it...keep on top of emails now or pay the price when I return to the office, which will be stressful enough.

Yes. I make sure I have a hotel with proper WiFi. I don't like getting behind on emails.
