Do you ever get tired of deleting files, only to have to go to the Recycle Bin in order to actually regain the space? Maybe you’re wise to the Shift+Delete file trick that skips the Recycle Bin but doesn’t “shred” the files in a secure manner? Well DeleteOnClick is a small freeware application that promises to securely delete files in just a click so that the data is unrecoverable.
Normally when Windows “deletes” a file it simply marks the part of the disk which the file is stored on as being writeable, but the file isn’t actually deleted at all. It is still fully recoverable with some simple file recovery software, and that’s where secure deletion comes in. By overwriting this portion of the disk, DeleteOnClick claims that it is impossible to recover the file.
The program follows the 5220.22-M secure file deletion standard as set by the US Department of Defense, so you can probably believe those claims. There’s a commercial version of this software which offers a range of extra features including the ability to rename files before deletion (so file recovery software can’t even see the filename), a function for scrubbing the rest of your free disk space and an option to securely empty the Recycle Bin among others.
- Securely delete files in just a click from the Windows context menu.
- Follows strict military standards for data security.
- Deleted files are no longer recoverable – so use carefully!
- Freeware with the option to upgrade to a more powerful commercial version.
