I think MediaWiki can be installed by pretty much everyone who reads sites like MakeUseOf. I would say if you can install and maintan a Wordpress blog then you can use MediaWiki as well. It's not hard at all.

Not for novices, but not terrible, either. You need to poke through some documentation (in a wiki, of course!) in order to find the settings you want, and these need to be changed with a text editor in one of the files in the installation. And, of course, you need a mySQL database (it may also accept other kinds). I've always used the automated tools in cpanel for setting up my databases.

I don't consider myself a sophisticated techie, but I am a fairly fearless tinkerer.

How hard was the install of mediawiki - is it for novices or strictly for people who know what they are doing?

I chose to install mediawiki on my own server, but recently friends used a wetpaint wiki to organize their anniversary. I took a poke or two at your wiki, and found a couple features I hadn't seen. It certainly has potential for people who want a hosted wiki.
