Most Mac users prefer iTunes as their default media player. While it has its advantages, iTunes does not manage the iPod very well, the most significant drawback being one-way transfers that only let you transfer music from your computer to the iPod. Here to offer the option to export music to your Mac computer from your iPod is a desktop app called CopyTrans Xport.

After installation the app lets you speedily transfer songs from your iPod to your Mac computer; along with the songs themselves, their play counts, dates added, ratings, and album covers are also exported. All you have to do is select the songs you want to export, choose an export folder, and then import them to whichever media player you are using on your Mac.

Xport is considerably faster than iTunes – its advertised speed is a transfer of 25 GB of music from your iPod to your Mac in less than an hour. Additionally you can use the app to find lyrics for your favorite songs.

Xport seems to be an unsupported product now. I used TouchCopy to transfer music from my old iPod to my new Mac.
