I love the column but as an eye doctor, I could not help but comment on the item about eye exercises. It is sad to see an entry like the first one implying that vision can be improved by such exercises. Nearsightedness and farsightedness are not diseases but are variations in healthy eyes. Farsightedness is due to the eye not focusing the light entering the eye as much as necessary while nearsightedness is due to too much focusing. There can be several causative factors but largely it has to do with the size of the eye. Don’t get me wrong – eye exercises definitely have a place in eye care and can benefit many people. However, the eye muscles as a group receive more exercise just doing normal life activities than almost any other part of the body. These exercises (can you call closing your eyes and covering them with your hands an exercise?) might help comfort after long periods of computer work but no more than taking a short break (1-2 min) every 30 minutes or so to let the muscles relax, such as looking out the window or turning to talk to someone, going to the bathroom or the fridge. You are never wrong doing any exercises but for this website to imply that nearsightedness or farsightedness can be changed by them is just wrong. Thanks for the article. I love reading it each day.
