This week’s poll question is: How Many Computers Do You Have In Your House?

Ads by Google

Let’ see just how computer-obsessed we all are. Include any smartphones and tablets which you think are powerful enough, but don’t get silly and include all of your appliances.

Now that you’ve told us how many computers are in your house, maybe you’d like to explain why they’re all there. Let us know in the comments!

We are three in the household, each with a desktop plus a laptop (all Xp:s). But then there are some older computers, still in use. One of the older is an IBM PC from 1981 (the first from IBM, no HD, no mouse, just old fashioned DOS) that's still going strong. I love it! And then there are my two Sinclair ZX81...

    I have 4 computers:
    a) a new one, powered by Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS
    b) the second one, 6 years old, powered by Ubuntu Linux 10.10
    c) an old one, 8 years old, powered by Ubuntu Linux 9.10
    d) and another one, an archaic computer, 10 years old, running dual boot Ubuntu and Windows, Ah! Ah! Ah! It is a survival, but unfortunate it never works with windows option.

1 Ubuntu Server(currently not being used, but loaded 2x a month to check for updates), 2 iMacs, 1 Sony Vaio, 1 Macbook, 1 Macbook Pro

And if we're counting "computer like devices"(which I didn't when voting in the poll) - 2 AppleTVs (one of each generation), 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 iPod Touches, 1 PS3, and 1 Wii.

    2 Desktops, a Laptop, a Nokia N96, and a Samsung Galaxy S - and they're all mine ahahaa! - Not included: the multi 'printer' - just 'cause it's got a mind of it's own doesn't warrant it's inclusion (",)

One desktop and one laptop. No smart phones, yet. Waiting for the summer to see what Apple unveils on the iPhone front before I get an iPhone.

2 as backup servers, 2 htpc, 2 fileservers, 8 testing machines ( running a virtual network of 12 computers) 6 gaming rigs mostly used once a week for lan parties or family gaming time. 3 machines for sale but still run occasionally and 12 older machines no longer plugged in old variety ( i have a 286, 386, 486, P1, P2, P3, SPARC, imac in running condition) 8 laptops 1 for each member of my family.

I live in a large family so I get to have lots of computers. of course this means I am their a 24/7 techsupport. It is fun though when I can boot up all these different machines and see them on a network or play games on them when nostalgic.

    Fun times

    1 PS3, 2 Smartphones, 1 iPad, 2 Macbooks and an apple tv (?almost a computer when JB'd?)

    March 21, 2011 at 12:20 pm

4 in the family, each with a laptop.
2 work laptops for me, one for my wife (both work at home)
    1 gaming Desktop,
    1 Win Home server
    1 htpc (nettop)
1 Dell R910 server with ~15 VMs (Do VM's count :-) ) used for work
    2 smart phones
    3 netbooks
various and sundry 'old' bits of hardware not plugged in anymore.

if we went the network device route, it gets even more scary.

Angela, I have to take you to task on a couple of things as I think they're important regarding accuracy of polls. Last week's poll asked, "Which is the best IM chat service?', not what is your "favourite IM chat service", and not what we "prefer". I voted Google Talk/Gmail Chat because I believe it to be the best, however I don't use it myself as none of my fellow chatters are on it. I "prefer" Skype because that's what all my friends use, but my "favourite" would have to be jabber. Begs the question then, what was your poll really asking and what did everyone think you were asking?

Just ... wow. Talk about your 'taking things serious' attitude. No offense meant of course, and actually quite a valid point...

Is a DSi a computer? I can see the road this can go down; which is why I've never brought that same Q. up before...

      March 21, 2011 at 2:49 pm

This week, there's also an explanation of how far to take it:
"Let’s see just how computer-obsessed we all are. Include any smartphones and tablets which you think are powerful enough, but don’t get silly and include all of your appliances."

Obviously, not mentioning where Playstations and DSis fell was an oversight, but I think most people would consider them far more powerful than your average microwave and washing machine and would therefore include them. :)

      March 21, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Last week, just under the question was this explanation:
"You probably use several IM chat services, maybe using a client like Trillian or Meebo to handle them all at once. But, if you could get all of your friends to contact you on just one of these services, which one would it be? Facebook? Skype? MSN?"

Which means, you understood me perfectly when you answered. You gave your opinion of the BEST service - the one you would convince all your friends to use if you could. :) Sadly, I think several people thought I meant best IM client (not service), because a few people mentioned Trillian in the comments. To me, that just proves people aren't actually reading the question or the brief explanation.

There are three people in my house and we each have our own computer. Two laptops and a desktop. And now that we're watching TV on Netflix through the Xbox 360, our broadband Internet is being used a lot! (That actually could be another poll - do you have antenna, dish, cable or Internet TV?)
