We use our smartphones to use all types of data on our phone. From business contacts and work emails, to our social networking updates and family photos, the smartphone carries everything. People are mostly careful about securing their phone with passwords and not forgetting their phone anywhere, but the biggest threat to the data on your phone are the applications you use.

Many smartphone applications have a non-transparent privacy policy and they access your data in numerous ways, without ever letting you know. Thus it is very important for there to be a monitoring application that keeps the privacy settings of smartphone apps in check. Here to be that for iOS apps, is a web service called Clueful.

Clueful is a free to use web service that lets you check out the privacy settings of any iOS application. The site offers you an iPhone like interface through which you can search for application on the iTunes app store. The site then displays that application along with an information overview, showing you the basic ways in which it threatens your privacy. You can use the Details tab to view about each entry on the list.

People who want to speak out about the application can do so using the Comments sections.

In addition to letting you search for apps, Clueful also has various categories of app on its home page that you can browse through. Categories include Just Added, Top Free, and Top Offenders.

Oddly enough, Clueful used to be an iOS app on the iTunes App Store until it was removed by Apple for reasons unknown.

Can it still be installed on iPhones/iPads that are not jail broken now? Love the concept and think this is exactly the type of tool needed to not just protect, but inform privacy rights. I don’t mind my information being used (heck, I like challenging my friends to games of Words With Friends) but I do get frustrated when I don’t know what information is being exposed and feel a responsibility to my contacts to be informed

Hi Mara, Clueful is not an phone app any more – it’s a web app with an interface that resembles an iOS app. You can easily check visit Clueful’s website from your phone or any other computer / smart device.
