Verdict: Microsoft ClearType Tuner is Totally Worth It

Oct. 30th, 2006 By Aibek

On October25′th I have written about Microsoft Powertoys a free software package for Win XP users. Package included ClearType Tuner on which I shortly commented following:

ClearType Tuner: by using ClearType technology this tool can make it easier to read text on your screen. I installed it and the difference in the quality of text is remarkable. For now I am quite satisfied with it, but I wonder how will I feel about it in a week, will keep you updated on it.

So right after installing it I was quite impressed with what it did to the text. But then I was not quite sure if I still would be happy with it after a week or so. Now that I have used it for almost a week I can say for sure it’s a cool powertoy and recommend it to everyone.

Update (Nov 1’st):

Based on the feedback, it seems that it works good with LCD screens (excluding high-end ones that already include this type of tunning). Some people with CRT screens reported no difference at all, and in few cases the text became blurry.

Your experience with this tool may be vary depending on the monitor you use.

Also, a lot of users (esp. those with good colour vision) find that ClearType has a nasty color fringe that makes text unreadable.
