Comment of the Week

We received a lot of great comments, including those from Colonel Angus, Bob Brandt, and Jon Glass. Comment of the Week goes to Marty Monroe, who earns our admiration and affection for this comment Do You Still Own a CD Player? [Poll] Do You Still Own a CD Player? [Poll] Read More :

I still use a radio/CD/cassette almost every day, in addition to the CD player that is hooked up to my hi-fi. When I can, I purchase all my music on vinyl. When I can’t get the vinyl, then it’s a CD. I have never considered streaming music or buying digital downloads. Call me old fashioned by I like to own something physical.

I also regularly listen to cassettes. I have many old radio comedies that I recorded in the 1960s and 70s, many of which are unavailable in any other format. Back then, I spent many an hour tracking programs down, swapping them with like minded people around the world.

A few years ago, a friend gave me all of the surviving Hancock Half Hours as mp3s on CDs, which have all been cleaned up. I listened to one particularly rare episode which contains a number of brief pauses. These correspond exactly with the dropouts on my original cassette recording. So this has come home. Whenever I listen to these old comedies I always drag out the cassette. All that background noise adds to the authenticity of the listening experience.

We chose this comment because it offers an interesting insight from someone of a certain age. Over the last 50 years we have used vinyl, audio cassettes, compact discs, and (most recently) digital downloads.

However, just because a new format emerges doesn’t mean everybody automatically moves on from the older formats. I wanted to pick 'No, Because I didn't think it would be worth the stress' but had to go for Not wanting anything even though it's heading towards Christmas so of course there are things I am thinking of buying.

It's a bit cheeky voting at all though since I'm a UKian and, despite the retailers best efforts, it isn't really part of our DNA (yet). There tends to be a couple of great deals advertised - which you wont get because there are 2 items in the whole country at that price. The rest of the stuff is on sale but no cheaper than it will be in the upcoming December, Pre-Christmas, Winter, Boxing-Day and New Year sales.

Very sad I could not get the Nexus 6 that was on sale for $199 USD on Amazon. However, I managed to grab an Asus Zenfone 2 the 2GB model for $170. So I am happy and glad to move away from my locked bootloader ATT S4. So long TouchWiz and Samsung!

Got an Apple Watch for 299.00 at a big box online. Would like to have gotten one at a different big box store offering $100.00 gift card with purchase of $349.00 watch, but it was in-store only. Not happening on Black Friday.

First, let me thank Marty Monroe for making me feel young. I'm in my mid 60's but when I plug my peripherals into my integrated amp I'm young enough to call it a "stereo" rather than a "hi-fi" (which means high fidelity and, FYI, inspired the Wi-Fi name).

As far as Black Friday, I didn't leave the house but I did buy a Nexus 5x at $80 off plus a $25 gift card. I get it Tuesday.

I'm with you. I checked for deals yesterday and was unimpressed. Hopefully tomorrow brings better luck. There's nothing that I really need at them moment, but a really good deal will certainly entice me.
