I agree with the other posters about the value of having MobileMe, I love it. Buy it on Amazon, it's about $30 cheaper.

Everything on MobileMe just works with no futzing around. It's easy. And it integrates beautifully with the iPhone. I can access my iDisk from anywhere with the iPhone, send it to a computer to print it out. It's very stable and reliable. I wouldn't have anything else. For 100 bucks a year it's not expensive.

Google this Google that Google Google Google. Hrm. It's worth $99/yr to have all of the same stuff that actually works well with the Mac. The Mac is an afterthought to Google most of the time, and with Apple and Google drifting apart, it makes sense to just keep .Mac. Err.. MobileMe.

If your time is worth very little, you could scavenge around and get this bits and pieces I guess. I find MobileMe to be worth the money.

What about the ability to track down my iPhone and/or turn it into a brick after it has been stolen?

Another useful feature, is there a for free version of that yet?

You seem to only have talked about the easier parts of MobileMe to providse for free. I would expect a full and honest disclosure in such an article.

I've used MobileMe for years. I'm not comfortable with using Google. I'm also leery of using some free sites for storing data. How reliable is that in light of the Danger/Sidekick fiasco we just witnessed? I feel I have most control of my data when I publish it on Mobileme. That security makes it worth the yearly cost to me.
