YouTube is full of footage from dashboard cameras mounted in cars that have encountered accidents, near misses or other hazards while driving. Such footage can be invaluable if such an incident goes to court, for insurance purposes or simply to settle a case of “right or wrong”. Most people interested in recording their journeys buy dedicated cameras for the job, like the GoPro Hero, but AutoGuard Blackbox is a free Android application alternative.
The app uses the device’s camera to record a video and GPS functions to gather other data including speed, precise location and nearest address. It can also be set to record automatically when connecting to certain Bluetooth devices or car docks. The free version allows photo capture, uploading to YouTube from the app itself, high resolution recording (1080p and 720p) as well as displaying map information and video on one screen.
There is a pro unlock to remove adverts and enable a background recording mode which allows you to keep recording while talking on the phone or using your device’s other functions (safely while driving, of course). Why spend money on an expensive dedicated dashcam when you can download this free app and upgrade at a small cost if you find it useful?
- Records video and information from GPS such as speed and location.
- Supports uploading to YouTube, image capture and emailing of recorded information.
- Useful in settling disputes or providing a video record of your side of the story.
- Supported by ads, upgrade for ad-free background recording.
