Google Desktop has so many excellent – and highly useful – features. It’s easily my favorite tool for indexing the massive amount of data I keep scattered around the various folders on my computer, and it’s a lot less painful than actually taking the time to sort everything myself.

It really is a tremendous productivity booster and deserves a place on any serious professional’s desktop – if not for the usefulness, then why not for some less-serious, completely fun gadgets!

The Voodoo Doll

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a nice guy. There’s not a mean bone in my entire body. But I do love this gadget, as it served me well during the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs. I mean, a guy can only tolerate so many bad calls against his team before he needs to slap the referee’s picture on this pixelated pin-cushion and commence with the imaginary pokings.

As far as I know, any results from using the voodoo doll are purely coincidental…

aren’t they…?

Stress Level Gadget

You’ve got to love any gadget that tells you expressly in its “about” page that it “is just for fun and can decrease the performance of your computer system.” I’m a huge fan of honesty, so I had to give this thing a try. What it does is monitor the level of activity on your computer and display your oh-so-scientifically calculated stress level. Since my own stress indicators are wildly out of whack from years in the IT business, it’s nice to have an applet that can help me out.

I do wish this one could be resized, as it’s a little bit on the small side.

Tetris

Come on now, what computer is complete without a way to play Tetris on it somewhere?

Purists will love the fact that there’s no block preview for the cheaters out there. It’s quite well done, includes catchy music, and is smart enough to pause your game when the Google sidebar loses focus.

That’s kind of ironic, when you think about it …

After all, when I lose focus, I pause what I’m doing and head over to my Tetris gadget. Isn’t it odd how things work out like that?

Desktop Yoga

A status bar at the bottom counts down 30 minutes and reminds you at the end to take a moment to stretch, breathe, and relax. It may sound like a (or be, to some of you) goofy idea, but I’m actually starting to really welcome it. It’s a great way to make sure that my stress level gadget won’t reach critical levels.

I was looking for something to complement this one, like a Mindfulness Bell or random sayings from the Tao Te Ching, but sadly found nothing. If you’ve seen one, please tell me in the comments!

The Quest for Truthiness

In the beginning, Colbert crept into the spotlight on The Daily Show. Gradually his popularity rose, until he ended up landing his own show with Comedy Central. Then he brought us Wikiality, and now he’s all over our desktop. I knew this would have to stay on my desktop when the first quote that came up was “Guests of the Colbert Report stay at the luxurious…crashing with a friend.”

The gadget automatically queries Wikipedia every four hours to integrate new bits of Truthiness to display in your sidebar – just to make sure you’re not missing out on any wildly funny Colbert quotes from the night before.

Cat Clock

If you use a sidebar at all, chances are good that you have a clock on it somewhere. Maybe you’re digital, maybe analog. Me, I’m a cat person. I can’t even remember how many of my grandparents’ friends’ homes I went into and noticed this guy lurking over a doorway. It brings back memories, and it makes me chuckle every now and then when I glance at my monitor. By far the most fun clock I’ve seen!

In case you’re wondering, yes, it is animated.

What would a cat clock gadget be without the wagging tail and eyes that peer back and forth hoping your mouse is the kind it can eat?

PuppetMuppet Noodle Timer

What computing session would be complete without a quick break for some hot, tasty ramen noodles? But how best to multi-task your cooking and computing? With the Noodle Timer, of course!

Simply click the left arrow to increase the number of minutes (or right arrow to decrease) and then press the start button to begin your countdown. The noodle cup on his head even rocks back and forth in time. Like the cat clock, it’s another thing that’s sure to bring a smile to your face when you see it sitting on your sidebar.

Answer Ball

There are times in the day where I’m confronted with a situation and I just don’t know how to handle it. Thank the heavens for my Magic 8-Ball!

This is another one that takes me back to my youth (read: makes me feel like an antique). How many of you had one of those crack and the goo leaks out all over the place? Well, you don’t have to worry about the mess any more – just quick answers to all of life’s greatest questions.

Hopefully you’ll get some enjoyment out of these – I know I do! I’m sure there are plenty of other great, not-so-practical gadgets available for Google Desktop, so I’m putting out an open call: what are your favorite just-for-fun gadgets? Comment and share the joy!

You probably use Firefox. Why? Probably because you’re a smart cookie and you know that it’s faster, more secure, and all that jazz. Well, I’ve grown tired of that. I want Firefox to be the most fun browser to use. I want to trick people into getting blown up with my browser!

What? I can do that? With PMOG, it’s possible!

PMOG, which stands for “Passively Multiplayer Online Game,” is a 200k browser add-on for Firefox that makes social browsing a lot more fun and interesting. Sign up and install the toolbar and you’re on your way to underhanded online fun. How does it work?

The PMOG toolbar sits at the bottom of your Firefox window and gives you ready access to your supplies: mines, armor, portals, lightposts, and chests. It also gives you quick access to your PMOG profile page and an IM bar that lets you message other players. As you progress in the game, you’ll collect datapoints (money) – you’ll need them to reload your inventory in the PMOG shoppe.

the PMOG profile page keeps you informed of activity: yours, your allies, and your rivals

When you visit a site, you can leave behind a mine and the next player to visit will receive a damage message when they arrive. Your toolbar gives you the option to turn on armor, which will, of course, absorb the damage should you wander across someone else’s mine. Fortunately the game gives you a way to strike back – by deploying a “St. Nick,” which will damage whoever placed the mine the next time they drop one. Take that, fiend!

My buddy mines geeks.com, and I hit it! Fortunately, my armor was on…

If you’d rather be generous you can leave behind a chest, which can contain datapoints or items like mines and armor. Since PMOG players can create alliances and rivalries with each other, chests are a great way to move items from player to player to give your side an advantage.

The toolbar also includes lightposts, which allow you to tag web pages in order to create a mission for other players to take. Think of it as a guided tour – find ten great pages about Gmail hacks, lightpost them, and then use the mission creator to set it up for others to try out (don’t forget to lay your mines along the way). You can also leave behind a portal; if the next player decides to use it, they’re taken to a URI that you pre-set when you place it. It’s a great way to trick someone into a mine, or to lead your allies to hidden chests.

Me placing a portal on the Make Use Of site…But where?!

Setting up missions is a great way to get friends, coworkers, or visitors to your site to visit a collection of pages. It’s a lot more entertaining than just shooting a bunch of links off to your preferred social bookmarking site. I mean, you can’t level up on del.icio.us, can you?

A mission! Do I take the challenge now, queue it for later, or get back to work? Hmmm….

The only downside to PMOG right now is that it’s still pretty small – there are only about 78,000 mines on the web. That being said, it’s a great concept and a lot of fun if you can get some mates to sign up with you. It’s a really creative way to add some entertainment value to social browsing. As the user base grows, this will turn in to an immensely fun – and hilarious – way to make browsing the web less tiresome.

Still curious? View the PMOG screencast from their launch:

If you don’t PMOG, you should. It’s good, harmless fun and it lets you game while you’re doing real work. Now how can you beat that?

Go sign up, install the toolbar, and keep your eye on the comments section for a mission from me!

I don’t know about you but I’m not much into fancy-pants 3D first person shooters. I can’t be bothered to build a massive gaming rig, blow $500 on a video card, and figure out what custom weights give me the best mouse response.

I’ve got a WII, and I love it, and one of the big reasons I do is for the emulation. Sadly however, I can’t bring my WII to work or to the coffee shop down the street – but I can bring my laptop, jump on their WiFi and fire up these four awesome sites for a quick old school gaming fix!

VirtualApple (Apple II and Apple IIGS)

I don’t know about you but every now and then I get a craving to hunt square rabbits, hire unfit workers, make them walk too far and then lose three days because I’ve got scurvy. Virtual Apple always satisfies my Oregon Trail fix; but don’t other classics like John Elway’s Quarterback, Crystal Castles, and Max Headroom (don’t lie, you remember Max Headroom).

c64s.com (Commodore 64)

My family’s first computer was the UPS-brown Commodore 64, so this one really takes me back. I even remember “modding” the case to the newer, more angular style when it came out. Yikes. Thrill to such Commodore favorites as Zork, Wizard’s Lair and Pakacuda. The site has all the titles categorized by genre and features screenshots – further underscoring the real graphical prowess of the C64!

Virtualnes.com (Nintendo Entertainment System)

vNes has a huge catalog of NES cartridge titles available for play on their site via a Java-based emulator – 765 of them to be exact. I’ve noticed a few problems with slowness on a few titles, but all in all it’s an excellent place to play old games online and satisfy your urge to jam on Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, or one of my favorites: Ivan Stewart’s Super Off Road.

Playnes.net (Nintendo Entertainment System)

Another big catalog of NES titles, but you’re able to register which gives you the ability to save states in the games you’re playing. You can even open other people’s states – meaning that when your buddy gets stuck trying to battle through the ninjas, you can swoop in, rescue the President, and prove just how bad a dude you really are.

GetBack.Com Arcade

Unlike the rest of the sites I listed, GetBack isn’t strictly a gaming site. It’s kind of a “throwback culture” site. The upside is that they do have several games in their arcade that you can play, like Intellivision Backgammon and River Raid.

What about you? Where do you go to satisfy your vintage gaming urges? Let us know!

I love my friends, and I love helping them. But God knows they’re not all that great with following along with my tech support advice over the phone. You know exactly what I’m talking about and it gets frustrating for you too I bet.

Well, after my last Make Use Of article, I had a brainstorm: why not use the most painless remote control and viewing application and the best URL truncator together to get rid of my support headaches? I almost started tapping my fingertips together and muttering “exxxxxcellent…” under my breath.

It’s a two step plan.

Step one: download and install TeamViewer on my laptop. I browsed over, grabbed the 1.1MB setup file and had it installed in less than a minute.

Step two: create a snurl.com address that points to the TeamViewer “customer module”. Snurl graciously shortened the URL to: http://snurl.com/2jbo8.

I can’t believe I didn’t do this ages ago.

Why did I choose TeamViewer? There are two major reasons: portability and a zero-configuration connection. Setting up a painless remote support system is no good if it requires multiple steps for the person on the other end. My goal is this: if I can make this so easy that my wife doesn’t get irritated when I talk her through the process, I’ve achieved my goal (and I’m still married).

TeamViewer doesn’t require any ports being opened on a user’s router, and they don’t need to know their IP. Talk them through getting the link open in a browser and running the file, and they’re presented with this screen:

Can it get any easier?

As long as you’ve got the software running on your end, all they have to do is read you the two numbers and they’re done! Type the first one in the “Create Session” box, enter the password when prompted, and the connection initiates within a few seconds. You’ve got full control of the remote PC – in about a minute, start to finish. The connection is fully encrypted “based on RSA private-/public key exchange and RC4 session encoding,” as described on TeamViewer.com.

If you can type, you can get a TeamViewer connection running

TeamViewer at work, controlling my wife’s laptop…

It also supports pretty much everything else you’d want a remote control app to, like session recording, file transfer, chat, scaling, multiple monitor support, and more. TeamViewer even runs on Mac. It’s totally free for non-commercial use, and that’s what I’m aiming for – all I want to do is minimize the amount of my free time the people I love consume with their PC woes!Think you have an easier method? I’d like to hear about it – really!

As I started to catch up with more “modern” methods of blogging (so long, Blogger.com!), I realized that I was sadly behind the times when it came to my blogger’s toolbox. Sure, the default Wordpress interface is clean, unimposing, and easy to deal with, but that wasn’t good enough for me. I needed a Swiss Army knife of a blog app, stat!

Since I’m a die-hard Firefox user, I headed over to the Firefox addons site to find a worthy candidate. A quick search turned up a few possibilities, the top two being ScribeFire and Deepest Sender. A quick look at the download stats: 1.6 million vs. 57,000 and I had a pretty good idea which one was going to win.

While the reviews for both addons are favorable, these addons are clearly in different classes. Deepest Sender is kind of like manually opening a second Firefox window and doing your Wordpress work there while you browse in another (which is the clunky method that made me start this search in the first place). It doesn’t allow image uploading or adding tags, but it is a decent way to quickly jot down parts of a post or brainstorm.

Deepest Sender is tiny, presents a cleaner interface, and it doesn’t run on your web server – so it would save a bit of bandwidth. Other than that, I don’t see too many advantages to running it.

Ready to move on, I close the window and fire up ScribeFire by hitting F8.

This is more like it! Scribefire springs into action, splitting the Firefox pane in half horizontally and revealing a solid editing environment right inside the browser!

ScribeFire has a lot of killer features – including support for multiple blog sites and publishing systems, tabbed posts (you can see two tabs open in my screencap), complete font control, YouTube and Flickr embedding, source code editing, and even a sharing pane to make it easy to check Technorati stats or add to Digg, StumbleUpon, Del.ici.ous, and more! Oh yeah, there’s an options tab, too, which allows you to change several aspects of ScribeFire’s behavior.

The tabs on the right offer broad support for WordPress’ other post-writing features, including categories, tags, timestamp, trackbacks, and ping options. You can even scroll through older entires and make changes to them on the fly. Is there anything this addon can’t do?

Oh yes…It also supports dragging and dropping from your Firefox tabs, like this:

Keyboard Shortcuts:

A list of all the default keyboard shortcuts used in ScribeFire.

Used in the rich text editor (preceded by Ctrl)

Bold: “B”

Italic: “I”

Underline: “U”

Link: “M”

Undo: “Z”

Redo: “Y”

Cut: “X”

Copy: “C”

Paste: “V”

Delete: “D”

Select All: “A”

The above shortcuts were as easy to add as going to the Wiki page, clicking on keyboard shortcuts, and then highlighting and dragging the block down to my ScribeFire editor. Holy ease of use, Batman!

Really, the only downside I can see is the size of my editing area. On my 15.4″ laptop’s 1280×800 screen, I only see about a paragraph of my post at any given time. Still, to have the editor reside at the bottom of my Firefox window rather than on another tab or in its own window, I’m willing to work with that. It’s a pretty minor annoyance, especially in the face everything Scribefire does well. Besides, it’s not the publisher’s fault I can’t yet justify buying a laptop that sports a WUXGA panel.

I didn’t notice any sluggishness when browsing with Scribefire open, and there was no major impact on the size of my Firefox install (the download itself is only 250kb).

The jury’s in, and between these two addons ScribeFire wins hands down. Deepest Sender is outgunned and outclassed this time, and has lost its spot in my Firefox addons list.

All in all, you can have your Windows Live Writer. With Scribefire and my portable Firefox install, I’m ready to blog anywhere with an ever-decreasing number of hassles. For in-browser blogging, Scribefire is about as good as it gets – unless you can convince me otherwise?

Does this bug you as much as it bugs me?

http://www.howmuchlongercanmyurlsget.com/before/Igo/totally/insane.htm

If you’re blogging or uploading files frequently, passing out lengthy links to your posts can get pretty tedious. That’s where URL truncator services come in, stepping up to provide a shorter link that’s easier to remember and share. There are a ton of options out there, and most have something unique to offer.

Tinyurl

Probably the best known truncator around, TinyURL offers the features most people are looking for: an easy to remember domain name, fairly short (though at 6 characters it’s double what some create) identifier, and a preview page for your shortened link by using “preview.tinyurl.com/[link]“. Their page also automatically copies the new URL to your clipboard, and they offer a bookmarklet.

You can’t really fault TinyURL for not being able to pull off three-character identifiers like some of the other services I listed – they claim they have more than 74 million in their database and receive 2 billion hits a month. With numbers like that, it makes sense that they need a couple more letters.

is.gd

A single blank box for your address on the main page (which is totally uncluttered) and you’re sent to the finished product. If you’ve got Flash enabled, the new URL is automatically copied, which is pretty slick. You’re also given the option of sending your visitors to a preview page first by simply adding a hyphen to the end of your new URL. I really like this idea, especially if you’re linking directly to a file and not a web page – just in case your visitors need to be able to right-click and save as to get it.

This is about as short as you can get, my URL weighing in at just 9 characters including punctuation. Not bad.

URL.ie

Again, very simple interface; fill in one blank with your URL and receive a three-character, truncated version. There’s not really much else that URL.ie does, but they do offer a bookmarklet for you to drag onto your Firefox bar – something is.gd doesn’t offer.

EasyURL

Something is a little amiss with their CSS code, and it didn’t present well in Firefox. Specifically, the button I needed to click to create my URL was mostly covered by the tools and contacts links.

Still, hitting enter still submits the form, and my shortened URL comes with a stats view – nice! All it gives you is creation time and total number of hits, but it’s still a nice addon to throw in. Better yet, they allow 2MB file uploads with automatic URL creation. No, it’s not a ton of space, but it’s a nice offering from a truncator. It’s a nice way to quickly share a .zip with a bunch of documents or photos. They also provide a bookmarklet, Firefox extension, and API access!

jmp2.net

The only service I’ve used so far that offers URL masking, which doesn’t really provide much anonymity anyways, but it is a feature some may look for. Again, creation was simple, and they offer a Firefox addon for URL creation.

w3t.org

Offers a “tag” feature, which can be very useful. Using my test link I added the tag “demo” to it and was given “http://w3t.org/c/demo.” The untagged version came across as “/u/7wal” so there’s definitely some value to tagging with this service. Their creation page is more cluttered than the other sites reviewed, with links to several other sites in their “network.”

xil.in

If w3t cleaned up their page and Ajaxed it, it would be this. Xil.in is a single page with tag support. Once you’ve filled in your URL and tag, the resulting truncated URL appears beneath the form in red text. Short, sweet, and a welcome change from being redirected to a second page. They offer Firefox integration in the form of a search bar, which works nicely to create new URLs.

xaddr.com

The only site to offer a Windows client, a somewhat unique method of creating URLs. Download and install the client, and it sits in the system tray. Copy the url you want shortened from your browser, click the icon in the tray, and a pop up balloon notifies you of the new URL. It’s also automatically pasted to the clipboard. I can see this being useful if you’re someone who needs to create a lot of short URLs and blog them.

They also offer a bookmarklet for both Firefox and IE. Unlike a lot of the other services, xaddr checked to make sure my URL was valid – it didn’t create a link to a non-existent file like the others did.

doiop.com

Doiop is a little different in that they don’t offer alphanumeric URLs like the other services. Instead, you pick a word: http://www.doiop.com/snickerdoodle. The downside is, obviously, that someone else may have taken your word – which can make the process a little frustrating. There’s no bookmarklet, toolbar, or anything else to ease the process either.

Snurl / Snipr / SnipURL

The best for last? Snurl offers the usual single-blank url truncation, but they go way beyond that. Register on the site, and your “snips” will be stored and you can manage them whenever you want – and clickthroughs get automatically tracked. Awesome! What’s more, the management page offers emailing of any or all of your snips and instant sharing with the usual suspects (Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon, etc.).

Snurl is so smart, it even creates RSS feeds for your snips. How cool is that? Sharing a pile of links is as easy as letting people subscribe to your feeds. You can also change the default domain name amongst snurl.com, snipr.com, and sninpurl.com at your leisure. Worried people might randomly leech your links? You can set a private key up and it will be automatically added to your new snips.

These features put Snurl in a class by itself, and I’d say it’s easily the most advanced truncator available – but what do you think? Have you found a service that you think is better? Go ahead, comment on it!

When it comes to your security, no web browser is perfect – and no malware app is going to catch everything. I came across BufferZone Free a few weeks ago and have been running it since, and I’m pretty impressed.

BufferZone adds another layer of protection to your browser by setting up a sandbox (an isolated “virtual directory” on your hard drive). As Trustware puts it, the program “transparently redirects modifications in your PC to a virtual, isolated environment, so that unauthorized modifications cannot be applied to your actual PC.” Malicious apps can’t write changes to your actual system files or registry – only BufferZone’s virtualized versions. Anything you download – temp files, images, executables, you name it – gets sandboxed. Why is that a big deal?

Well, it only takes a split second for a malicious app to burrow its way into the deep, dark crevices of your operating system.

How does BufferZone help?

The sandbox keeps these nasties from going resident on your system and gives your malware defenses time to obliterate them before they can cause any harm. If I click on a link to a key generator, the hosting website redirects me to another page that spawns a browser hijacker installer. If that happens, BufferZone neatly puts it in the virtualized directory, and my anti-virus software kicks in and nukes the threat within two seconds.

To top it all off, there’s no appreciable difference in the rendering speed of your browser and no real impact on resources. On my system, the hit was 0% on the CPU and about 9MB of memory.

Slick. Very slick.

The program comes in both free and paid versions (which offers customization and protection of multiple browsers), but I’ll only talk about the free one here.

Download the 9MB .msi file and install it, and BufferZone sets up a protected, virtualized directory in c:\virtual\untrusted\. All activity from your selected browser will now be redirected here and isolated from your “real” operating system.

Before I go any further with this, I’ve got to tell you to NOT knowingly visit any sites that are likely to infect your computer. You’re asking for trouble. I was, too, but I had to find out whether this app was the real deal or not. I also tested BufferZone Free on IE7 from a bare Windows XP SP2 install with no other patches applied.

To put BufferZone through the paces, I decided to go on a little jaunt around some of the most nefarious sites I’m familiar with. I headed over to a keygen site, did a few searches, and watched BufferZone spring into action as it popped up several alerts for items that were landing in the sandbox. The beauty of it: my anti-virus software caught every single one of them and removed them with ease. I surfed around carelessly for a while longer and exited Internet Explorer at which point some other evildoers tried to invade my system, but BufferZone and Avast! once again tag-teamed them into submission.

After a reboot, I ran a full scan with Ad-Aware and HijackThis and couldn’t find any traces of anything remotely malicious. Wow. I’m impressed!

Here’s the kicker. Even in the free version, the app will protect not only your browser, but any process spawned by the browser. Download an attachment from your Gmail account and launch it with Word, and Word automatically inherits the BufferZone protection. This is huge; even if your webmail provider automatically scans attachments, no scan is perfect.

The program worked beautifully in my testing and it’s footprint wasn’t even noticable. For a free application with such terrific security potential, BufferZone Free is definitely worth a download. If you’re still not convinced, try out Trustware’s proof of concept.

If you’ve tried BufferZone, what do you think of it? Got something better that you’d recommend? Let’s hear about it!
