Everyone loves having a cool and unique T-shirt, and geeks seem to love them the most. There is nothing better than to get an awesome new T-shirt as a present. Although the holiday season may be over soon, it’s still a good idea to know of some places to buy cheap and stylish T-shirts online.

So, Where To Buy T-shirts Online ?

Although MakeUseOf is usually centered around free things, you aren’t likely to get a free good looking T-shirt anytime soon. So, get ready to open up your wallet and spend a few bucks as we take a look at great places to buy T-shirts online.

1. ShirtsOnSale

Although this website doesn’t exactly sell T-shirts, it’s definitely the first place you want to go to when you begin buying T-shirts.

ShirtsOnSale is a blog that gathers information about daily T-shirt deals and provides you with a list of great coupons for T-shirt selling websites. Subscribe to its RSS feed and get updates about T-shirts being sold on Woot, Uneetee, Teefury, and Shirtaday. A great blog for those T-shirt lovers out there.

2. Woot Shirts

Shirt.woot is possibly one of the most popular places to get cheap limited time T-shirts. Each day, a shirt of the day is sold for $10 with no shipping fees. If you happen to miss a shirt when it was on sale, fear not; you can still get the shirt for $15 assuming the shirt is still in stock.

Many popular shirts are sold on Woot, and they have limited supplies. So, if you don’t hurry, your new favorite shirt is going to be sold to some creep down the street.

Shirt.woot also has a unique “contest” called the derby. Each Thursday a new theme is released, and Woot members can submit their own designs to the site. Other members vote on the designs, and the top three designs get turned into shirts and sold.

Woot Shirts also has a thing called the Day of Reckoning. Each Monday, the crew takes a look at the shirts being sold and they stop producing the shirts that haven’t been selling. Check out Woot everyday and get the coolest shirt around.

3. TeeFury

This website is very much like Shirt.woot, expect for one thing. Their slogan sums things up “TEE TODAY. GONE TOMORROW.” Be sure to check this website daily if you really want a unique one of a kind T-shirt. It’s a very simple site to look through. Basically, just check the website each day. If you like the shirt, you buy it. If you don’t, you buy it anyway so you don’t regret not buying it.

4. OneHorseShy

Over at OneHorseShy, you don’t have to worry about one T-shirt a day. They have a pretty large stock, and a huge variety of T-shirts to sell. Just browse around for a few hours and find something you like. You can browse the T-shirts by different themes, such as political, geeky, stupid, cool, social, Western, and Asian. The only bad thing about this website is that the T-shirts are a tad bit more expensive (~$20) than the ones from Shirt.Woot or TeeFury.

5. Busted Tees

I personally love the T-shirts over at Busted Tees, mainly because they’re pretty funny and also really simple. This website is very much like OneHorseShy, and so are the prices (though specially discounted T-shirts are cheaper). You can sort the T-shirts by categories, including TV, Internet, politics, wordplay, pop culture, and many more.

You can also buy a variety of hoodies if you’re not that into T-shirts. Busted Tees is just another place to get cool and funny T-shirts.

6. ThinkGeek

ThinkGeek. Every geek has heard of it. I’ll be very surprised if everyone hasn’t shopped there before. ThinkGeek is Geek culture at its best. It’s full of extremely geeky T-shirt designs that you’re all going to love. Categories range from generic geek, gaming, and pop culture to Japanese, IT, and Math. This is the best place to get T-shirts that non geeks will never understand. Get a shirt and show off your geeky side.

7. MySoti

MySoti is the place to buy, sell, and create your own T-shirt. If you’re a designer, you’re going to fall in love with how easily you can make money. Steps for creating your T-shirt are very simple.

A.	Choose a product (canvas or T-shirt)
B.	Upload your design (SVG or PNG)
C.	Create and submit design

You can choose the price at which you sell your design, starting from the MySoti base price. Whenever a T-shirt sells, you will receive whatever markup you put on. For example, if the MySoti base price was $20, and you sell the T-shirt you created for $30, you will receive a profit of $10. Simple, isn’t it? If you want tips on creating a successful design, check out Simon’s post on T-shirt Designs.

Even if you’re not a designer, you can still benefit a lot from MySoti’s unique T-shirt designs. Go out and have fun making and buying shirts from MySoti.

There you have it. Those are my favorite places to get T-shirts for myself and friends. Do you get your shirts from somewhere else? Which T-shirt designs do you like most? Tell me about it in the comments.

Students who didn’t do so hot last year have probably made a New Year resolution to improve their grades.

To help you all with the next semester, I’ve decided to make a list of extremely helpful web tools that will make school easier for all the struggling students out there.

Enjoy, and good luck with the new semester.

1. PinkMonkey / Shmoop

Everyone already knows about Sparknotes and Cliffnotes, but there are very few who have used PinkMonkey. PinkMonkey is very much like Sparknotes and Cliffnotes, except it seems to me that it has slightly more detailed summaries which is always nice. Pinkmonkey is just another resource for book notes.

Another website you’ll like is Shmoop. It’s currently in Beta, and doesn’t have a large selection of books as the other websites. However, it does include a section that I absolutely love. Instead of just stating the theme and symbol of a book, Shmoop gives a list of quotes supporting the theme. Perfect for a thesis paper.

Similar Sites: Sparknotes, Cliffnotes, LitSum, GradeSaver, Bookrags

2. BibMe

One of the things I hate most about school is that for every paper you turn in, professors insist that you cite your sources. The problem I had was that it took too long to cite my sources. My essay would take about 40 minutes to write, and my bibliography would take two hours.

Luckily for you, there are a lot of websites that will put together a bibliography for you.

My favorite site for this is BibMe. It’s extremely easy to use, and supports books, magazines, websites, newspapers, and much more. Just input a little info about your source, and BibMe will cite it for you. After adding all your books, you can download the bibliography. Easy to use, and works wonderfully.

Similar Sites: EasyBib andOttobib.

3. FlashCardExchange

Known as the “worlds largest flashcard library”, FlashCardExchange is the best place to study for tests. You can create your own Flash Cards or study using the hundreds of pre-made flashcard sets. Hundreds of flash cards covering a variety of different subjects, it’s the first place you should go to when you need to study or review.

Similar Sites: Quizlet, StudyStack

4.TadaLists

A great way to make sure you do well in school is to make sure you do all your homework. For an unorganized person such as myself, it’s hard to remember all the things that are due, so I find it useful to use simple lists like TadaLists to keep track of what I need to do. I personally like TadaLists because it’s so simple, and I can use it on my iPhone.

Similar Sites: See the MakeUseOf list of To-Do lists.

5. LectureFox

All you need to get a head start in college is to get a good understanding of the subject you’re taking, or see what type of topics are covered in a course. It’s really great that many colleges provide free lectures for you to listen to/download as this helps tremendously with the understanding of the topic. LectureFox is a great place to go for these free university lectures. Choose a category and see a list of lectures from various colleges, including MIT and Yale.

Similar Sites: Check out iTunes U for more free lectures

6. RateMyProfessor

RateMyProfessor is a self explanatory website. Students can rate your professors, and help out new students by showing them the strengths and weaknesses of each professor. This may not be helpful this semester if you’re not transferring classes, but this website can seriously help you out when you’re choosing what courses to take. RateMyTeachers has a similar idea, although it’s for K-12 teachers.

7. PrintablePaper

You have a paper due. You’ve waited until the last day to get started. It has to be handwritten. You take a look into your backpack….no paper. You take a look at the clock on the wall…3:00am. Stores are closed. If you didn’t have access to PrintablePaper, you’d be pretty screwed. With PrintablePaper, you never have to worry about running out of “special” paper. As long as you have a printer, you can print graph paper, lined paper, and even Cornell paper. Download 400+ different papers, all for free. A must for all students.

Similar Sites: If PrintablePaper isn’t enough, go make your own in Photoshop.

8. BookFinder

Schools scam us out of too much money. You spend hundreds to get a new book each semester, and you only use it for a few weeks. With BookFinder, you’ll get to save hundreds on textbooks. Great website for the half starved students.

Also check out Nick’s article on where to find cheap textbooks.

Similar Sites: Half

9. Evernote

Notes, notes, notes. Teachers tell you to do it all the time. Students never listen. School is going to be a lot easier if you can take good notes. Takes notes about lectures, and keep track of everything you learn all year. The better your notes, the better you’ll do on the finals. Evernote is my favorite note taking application, and it’s even better now that it’s out of private beta. Get notes synced to the desktop, the web, and even your iPhone.

Check out Shankar’s review of Evernote for more information.

Similar Sites: Ubernote, NoteSake

10. Plagiarism Detection

Plagiarism is a huge issue in colleges and even in high school. While teachers get access to fee based sites like TurnItIn, students can still check their work with free tools to make sure they haven’t plagiarized too much. Plagiarism Detection is a free tool that you need to signup to use. Then you can browse or copy/paste your work into the box. It then checks with Google to see if there is anything else similar.

Of course, if you wrote the whole thing yourself then you have nothing to worry about right? Use this tool to double check that you did not copy too much from other places. (Also, if you’re a blogger, use this to track down those article stealers.)

Similar Sites: Plagiarism Checker, Copyscape (Need to pay to get full features)

Bonus: 11. File Destructor

File Destructor has been mentioned before by Aibek, and is a tool that should only be used for emergencies. Basically, it’s a tool that creates a fake file that you can send to your teachers. You can choose the extension as well as the size of the file, and when your professor can’t open the file up, you can just blame it on your computer. Of course, many teachers are starting to not accept these excuses, so be careful when using this. This web tool allows you to spend hours browsing MakeUseOf instead of working on that stupid project.

I hope you all got something out of this list of useful web tools for school. I know there are a lot of students out there, and I know I’ve missed a lot of great web tools. So, if you know any other great websites that you use to help you in school, be sure to leave a comment and tell me all about it. And again, good luck next semester.

It’s the holiday season; a time of relaxing, sleeping, hanging out, and having fun. So, let’s back away from technology for a moment and have some fun learning cool tricks that are bound to impress your friends. These tricks all take some time to master, but as you have time off work due to the holidays; you should be able to get a few tricks down.

Here are some extremely cool but useless tricks you can impress your friends with.

1. Learn Pen Spinning

Originating in Japan, this hobby is taken on by many Japanese students in order to entertain themselves when bored. It’s become more and more popular, especially with the high school students in the US and in Asia. Although pen spinning sounds rather easy to do (after all, it is merely the act of spinning a pen around in your hands), techniques have developed to make pen spinning a very difficult hobby to master. Here is a video demonstrating the pen spinning professionals.

Where can I learn Pen Spinning

The best place to go if you want to learn to pen spin is probably the UPSB (Universal Pen Spinning Board) which is a pen spinning forum. There, you can access video tutorials that give you step by step instructions on each technique. You can also watch user posted videos of them showing off their skills. If you’re really interested in pens, you can buy or sell specially modified pens, and ask others for help when you’re stuck with a trick.

You can also access the UPSB Wiki, which has a very detailed list of all the tricks as well as videos tutorials on how to perform the trick.

2. Learn Coin Manipulation Tricks

Coin manipulation tricks involve movement of a coin around your hand. This is very similar to pen spinning, but requires a different set of skills. Tricks start out simple, but the more difficult tricks may take weeks or months to master. If you’re going to play around with coins, be sure you can invest some time into it. Nimble hands can also help.

Where can I learn Coin Manipulation?

Coin manipulation can be learned over at Coin Manipulation. Although the website itself is not pleasing to the eyes, it provides detailed instructions along with an animation to show you how a trick is done. Coin Manipulation has a massive list of different tricks and combos, and is all you will need to begin to manipulate coins.

3. Learn Lighter Tricks

Ever since Zippo lighters have been out and about, people have been playing around with these lighters. Most of them don’t even smoke, so don’t think you have to smoke in order to mess around with these lighters. Lighter tricks are very similar to pen spinning, and seems to be a combination of pen spinning and coin manipulating. The only downside is that you may get burned.

Warning: Please be aware that you are going to be playing with fire while practicing. Practice in a non-flammable room, and take all the safety measures needed. Also, make sure that there are no pets and other people including small children around when you accidentally fling your lighter across the room.

Where can I learn Zippo Lighter Tricks?

Unlike the previous two, there doesn’t seem to be many step by step instructions on how to mess with the lighter. However, you can find a mass of video tutorials on lightertricks.com. You can also find many tutorials on Youtube or Metacafe just by searching.

There you have it; useless but totally awesome tricks you can use to impress your friends and family. Do you know of any other tricks that I’ve missed? Did you enjoy these tricks? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Also, for anyone who’s interested in learning magic during the break, be sure to check out Jimmy’s great post about internet magic tricks.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and all the geeks out there are patiently waiting to scram out of bed at 2am in the morning and get in line for the Black Friday Sale. Even after all the hair pulling, biting, scratching, and kicking involved in reaching the front of the line, all of the great products seem to be gone before we even get there.

How do people do it? What’s their secret? How can they go into a store and know exactly what they want? The secret to success during the Black Friday Sale is planning. With limited time and multiple stores to hit, you need to plan beforehand exactly what stores you’re going to go to, and what you’re going to buy. The only problem is that most stores don’t release their black friday ads until the last minute. Luckily, websites like BFads.net can help us make the most of our Black Friday.

BFads is a website that is all about Black Friday ads. Leaked ads are posted on the website and organized in a fashion that is easily browsed by a viewer. Although these ads may not be official, most of them turn out to be accurate in the end. BFads updates several times a day, especially as it gets closer and closer Thanksgiving.

There are many features of BFads that anyone who is going to participate in the Black Fridays sales is going to benefit from. For one, there is a huge list of adscans that you can download in .ZIP or.PDF formats.

Although advertisement scans are all you really need to plan out your shopping experience, BFads makes things more convenient to browse by having a section dedicated to each store and includes all the ads in a typed, easy to search format. Click on the store you like, and browse through the ads. You can sort the advertisements by price; if you’re looking for the best deals.

Another great feature is the ability to add certain items into a ’shopping list’. This is extremely useful if you want a printout of all the things you want to buy, the store they are in, and how much the items cost. It’s also great that you can sent your shopping list with your friends The only downside to this is that you have to register, but that’s free and only takes a few seconds.

Other features BFads include:

Access the BFads forums and get advice on what items you should or should not buy

View the store hours of the stores participating in the Black Friday sales.

Use your phone and view the mobile version so you can look while waiting in line.

Read guides on what to buy this holiday season in the articles section

In all, BFads is a great website to get ready for the Black Friday rush by going through wide choice of Black Friday ads from different stores such Walmart, Best Buy, Sears, Staples, Toys R Us and many more.

View the ads early, and begin your planning as early as possible. Browse the ads of all the stores and keep track of the ones you like with the shopping list. Use BFads daily, plan what you’re going to do, and wake up early so you can ensure a pleasant Black Friday experience. No more wandering around the store for hours looking for something cheap that you might want. BFads does all the work for you.

So, how many of you are excited for Black Friday? Is anyone going to participate or are they only interested in Cyber Monday? Do you know of any other websites that can help you out on Black Friday? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Podcasts, Netcasts, call them what you want. Every geek out there should be listening to these things. Every single one of you. If ever you see a geek with earphones plugged into his/her ears, I guarantee you they are listening to the latest podcasts. It’s just something most geeks can’t live without. We thrive on the latest podcasts.

Now, I know there are still some people out there who haven’t listened to many podcasts, and I’ve been feeling a bit sorry for those people because they are missing out on so much. So, I’ve decided to make a list of my favorite podcasts so that new listeners can have some suggestions while sifting through the thousands of new podcasts each day.

I’m also always looking forward to getting new podcast suggestions, so why don’t you all post a small (or large) list of the podcasts that you listen to?

Here are 10 podcasts that I can’t live without. Everyone interested in technology should give them a try. Plus if you’re looking for a suitable software app to subscribe to the podcasts, check out Nick’s article on 3 good podcast apps worth trying.

The following five podcasts are part of the Revision3 network :

Diggnation (Weekly)

Those of you who are familiar with Digg will have heard of this podcast. Each week, see Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht get drunk and discuss the latest stories on Digg, adding in their own hint of humor. Nothing better than two drunk guys talking about tech.

This is a great podcast if you’re a big Digg fan or for those of you who don’t visit Digg as frequently as you’d wish. Listening to Diggnation is a great way to catch up on the stories of Digg.

A word of warning; the podcast’s humor is a little bit vulgar but I doubt you guys will be offended that much.

If you really enjoy Diggnation and Digg, you should also check out The Digg Reel which covers the most popular videos on Digg each week.

Tekzilla (Weekly/Daily)

Hosted by Patrick Norton and Veronica Belmont, Tekzilla is a weekly dose of technology where users are extremely important. Tekzilla thrives on its users. Each week, they “Tackle Tough Tech Questions” as they call it and spend the time answering the questions.

Tekzilla also has a daily show that they call ‘Tekzilla Daily Tips’ where a cool trick, app, or website is introduced in a minute to two minute segment. If you ever have a question about technology, just send an email to the folks at Tekzilla and your question may be answered on the show.

Hak5 (Weekly)

Hak5 is relatively new to Revision 3 but it has been popular ever since August of 2005.

The host Darren Kitchen talks all about technology and do-it-yourself-hack-projects as well as a little bit of tech humor mixed in.

Great for those of your interested in modding, and DIY projects. Get your hack on.

Systm (Weekly)

A more of a technical show than any of the others, Systm is for the serious modders. Hosted by Patrick Norton, this show is all about making things better.

Want to build cool things but don’t want to spend too much money? Do you enjoy making all sorts of tech gadgets? Systm is the show for you. Check it out …

ScamSchool (Weekly)

I don’t know about you, but I really love getting free drinks at the bar. Brian Brushwood’s show ScamSchool is all about “social engineering at the bar and on the streets” to get yourself free drinks. Even if you’re not a big fan of getting drunk or if you’re not at the legal drinking age yet, ScamSchool is still one of the coolest podcasts about magic tricks. I know it’s not really tech related, but we all want to amaze our friends with cool magic don’t we? Getting a free drink would just be a bonus.

The next five are from Leo Laporte’s TWiT network :

TWiT (Weekly)

Possibly the most popular tech podcast. Everyone who considers themselves a geek should have heard about this. This is the main show in Leo Laporte’s TWiT network. TWiT is short for “This Week in Tech”, and the title says all. Each week, Leo Laporte gets together a panel of famous tech people and discusses the latest news topics in technology.

Previous people in the TWiT panel have included John C Dvorak, Patrick Norton, Veronica Belmont, Kevin Rose, Wil Harris, Ryan Block, Jason Calacanis, Adam Curry, Robert Heron, Roger Chang, Steve Wosniak, Alex Lindsay, and many more.

This podcast is so epic I can’t even describe it. Though this podcast is supposed to be all about tech news, it has been known to go off on some tangents and end up as a debate about tech ideas. Definitely someone every geek should listen to.

Net @ Night (Weekly)

In this show, Leo Laporte and Amber MacArthur start by talking about things that are going on in the tech world. After a few stories about tech, they introduce a guest who is usually related to an interesting new beta website. The interviews aren’t very long and Leo and Amber always seem to pick great sites to talk about.

If you’re one of those people who are interested in being the first to try out new websites you’ll be very happy that you subscribed to Net @ Night.

Security Now! (Weekly)

This podcast is for anyone interested in keeping themselves safe on the internet, securing their computer from intruders, recovering data, and anything else related to security. Leo Laporte talks with Steve Gibson the creator of GRC and the man who coined the term ’spyware’.

This man is a genius and knows pretty much everything about security. His site (GRC) has the famous ShieldsUp! tool as well as many other security applications/downloads. If you’ve ever been afraid or curious about the bad things going on with the computer industry, Security Now! is a must listen for you.

Windows Weekly

As the title suggests, this podcast is all about Windows. The latest Windows news, tricks, updates, flaws, you name it, Windows Weekly should cover it. Paul Thurrott and Leo talk all about Windows on this podcast.

There is also a part of the podcast where great software is introduced. It’s worth a listen, even if you aren’t much of a Windows fan.

MacBreak Weekly

As you’ve probably guessed, this podcast is all about the Mac. However, unlike Windows Weekly, MacBreak Weekly has a much larger panel of Mac people to discuss things about Apple.

The panel usually consists of Leo, Merlin Mann, Scott Bourne, Andy Ihnatko, and Alex Lindsay. They just spend an hour to an hour and 30 minutes talking about Apple, the Mac, iPods, Steve Jobs, and anything else you’d come to expect from Mac fans.

So if you’re a mac fan this one should be definitely in your feedreader.

Other Goodies:

A random sprinkle of great podcasts.

MakeUseOf Podcast (Weekly)

I know, I shouldn’t be promoting the MakeUseOf podcast because I blog for MakeUseOf, but I’ve always been a big fan of the podcast; even before I was a writer here. Although the MakeUseOf Podcast is quite new and is always looking for user comments and recommendations, it’s still a great podcast that covers tech news and even the stories that have been submitted to MakeUseOf.

Those of you who are frequent MakeUseOf readers should add our podcast to your list to hear some inside info from the authors themselves. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

DL.TV (Weekly)

In this podcast provided by the Ziff Davis network, host Robert Heron covers just about everything tech. DL.TV has segments for gadgets, games, websites, tech pictures, tech help, and much more.

It’s like a big box of tech wrapped in a neat little package. A great podcast about general technology, and a great place for reviews.

Cranky Geeks (Weekly)

Hosted by John C. Dvorak, this is the thing to listen to if you want to see geeks complaining about the latest trends. Like TWiT, Cranky Geeks also has a panel of unique tech people, most of whom are pretty cranky themselves.

Each week, John and the rest of the geeks discuss the latest tech news and complain about everything along the way. I love being fed news by cranky old people. It’s such a delight.

GeekBrief.tv (Daily)

Cali Lewis gets her geek on in this very short daily podcast. She covers news, projects, gadgets, unique websites, and whatever might have caught her eye that day.

Though it may be a short (only 3-5 minute) podcast, there is enough content in there for you to learn something. Quality is always better than quantity.

WebbAlert (Daily)

Hosted by Morgan Webb, this is basically a daily news podcast. Nothing special, nothing extra. Just your daily dose of news. While many might think this is stupid, I can tell you that it’s a big help on catching up on what you’ve missed after a day of work. It’s not like everyone has the time to read up on their favorite blogs.

WebbAlert is something that you should set to automatically download. Then, after a day at work, you can turn on your TV and see all that you’ve missed. Though most of the shows are only about news, there are certain episodes where Morgan decides to discuss a certain topic (like YouTube videos or the TED Conference). Think of this as the CNN Nightly Broadcast for tech.

MAKE Podcast (Weekly)

As a geek, I really enjoy making things. While I have podcasts like Systm and Hak5, there are some days where I don’t want to spend too much time making something. MAKE Magazine’s Weekend Projects does just the trick. Most of the projects on the MAKE Podcast are easy to create, and it seems like they’re a lot of fun to make.

The usefulness of a project is just an added bonus. Previous MAKE projects have included making a Soda Bottle Rocket, hard drive wind chimes, Mint Tin Amps, a Bullwhip, and much more. I know you guys will love this podcast. Now if only I had the patience to make all these things….

So that was a list of my favorite podcasts. What are your favorite podcasts? Make a list and share your thoughts in the comments!

I’ve always been the type of person who’s pretty concerned about how their desktop looks. I want my desktop to look perfect, especially since I’ll be staring at it for hours on end. I’m also the type of person who loves to customize and get the latest stats on my computer.

I used to use the old Vista sidebar for this task, but that wasn’t nearly as meaty as I had hoped. I tried the sidebar in Google Desktop for a while, but it looked a bit ugly to me . After browsing around for a little bit, I discovered an extremely cool app called Samurize that could make my desktop look freaking amazing while telling me computer stats and many other things.

What is it?

While I myself consider Samurize to be more of a sidebar program than anything else; it’s so flexible that it can take on many different jobs and execute them perfectly. Samurize can do whatever you want it to do. Here is how the makers of Samurize describe their product:

“Samurize is an advanced system monitoring and desktop enhancement engine for Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista. IT professionals, overclockers, gamers and desktop modders alike use Samurize for system information, weather reports, news headlines and much much more. And best of all, Samurize is 100% free!”

That’s probably the best description of the program you’ll find, but once you go to the website and see some example of what you can create, you’ll be blown away and see just what you can do with this program.

Features

As mentioned above, Samurize is a tool that can do many different tasks, but here are a list of things that I’ve used it for so you can get a better idea of how you can customize it to suit yourself.

You can use Samurize to:

Make your desktop look cooler

Monitor very precise usage of RAM and CPU

Get your latest News/Weather/To-Do List updates

Monitor useless but cool information about your computer usage

Control your music player

Lots more

How to use it:

After you download Samurize, you’re going to have to customize it to make it look good. To do this, you can either find a pre-configured package to download or make one yourself. If you feel like making one yourself, you’ll want to head over to the tutorials so you don’t mess anything up. My recommendation is for you to download a pre-configured package that you like, and then configure things using the included ‘Config Editor’. Just right click on the icon after you’ve installed Samurize, and you should see something like this:

Click it to open up the Config Editor.

I know it’s really scary when you first see it, but the concepts are very easy to understand if you’re just doing basic editing. It’s a WYSIWYG editor, so all you need to do is to drag things where you want them and they’ll show up on your desktop at the place you wanted.

To customize things even more, you can install plugins. It’s really a great app that you can customize to your desires. If you need help, you can even go on their IRC and get tips from the pros.

Examples:

Instead of ranting on about how cool Samurize is, I think it would be better if I showed a few examples of the customizations people have created and have you decide on your own. Here are three of my favorite pre-made packages.

Falcone’s Desktop: Download

Glass: Download

Axiom: Download

Dego: Download

Hopefully that should give you guys all an idea of what an awesome program Samurize is. Download it, play around with it, and then post back here. I’d love to hear your thoughts and see your designs. Also, are there any other sidebar programs you use instead of the one provided in Windows Vista?

Windows Vista has been out for quite a bit and although there has been much dispute on whether or not XP is better, it’s safe to say that there are tons of users who are using Vista, whether they want to or not.

One of the problems I had when I was buying Windows Vista was what version to get. There was Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate and a lot of others most people never heard about. Although I wanted all the awesome tools in Windows Vista Ultimate, I was stuck with Home Premium because I didn’t want to shell out the extra cash.

One of the features that I really loved about Vista Ultimate was the Shadow Copy function, which made it so I could “go back in time” as Apple puts it and restore data that I deleted. As much as I loved the feature, I really didn’t want to spend a hundred dollars on it.

It turns out that although the Shadow Copy program is not in Vista Home Premium or Home Basic, Vista still backups your data. You just don’t get a way to access the data. Luckily, there is a great tool out there called ShadowExplorer which gives you the power to browse the backups that Vista makes.

Shadow Explorer is extremely easy to use. All you have to do is download the program and start it up. Then you can access all the backups without having to use a hard to navigate interface. At the top of the program, there is a place where you can change the dates of the backup you’re seeing, and also a place to select which disk you want to browse. After that, there isn’t much to teach because most people can figure things out by themselves. Click on a folder to see the contents, and right click on a file if you want to restore it. Select the ‘export’ button and save the file wherever you want to keep it. There really isn’t much else to it. It’s a very small program (around 2MB) but functions great and hasn’t given me any problems.

This is an awesome tool and I’ve fallen in love with it because I always delete things and realize days later I deleted the wrong thing. It’s also saved my butt a couple of times.

Know any other tools that replace certain paid for Windows Vista features? Post a comment and talk about them.

As much as some people hate it, there will always be times where you might have to collaborate with someone else. While working with someone else might make it easier to get ideas and finish faster, it’s going to be a nightmare if you don’t have the right tools for working together.

Who would want to have dozens of windows open while trying to explain some website to a fellow worker? It seems that there have been a lot of people who have been frustrated by working with others because there are quite a few tools out there to deal with this problem.

The tools that are going to be mentioned are all free to use and do not require you to install any programs at all. Just visit each site and you’ll be ready to work.

1.Scriblink

This tool has been mentioned before in the Make Use Of directory, and it’s probably the fastest to set up. All it requires is for you to go to the website. No extra clicking, just start it up and invite people to join you. Scriblink is basically a giant whiteboard where you and your fellow workers can get together to jot down ideas. While it may seem silly to draw on white space, you have the option of uploading images, which you can later mark up.

You also have very useful features such as saving what you have, printing everything out, or sending it to for your boss to see. The chatbox makes it easy to communicate with others without having a separate IM window open.

You can also have the option of chatting via VoIP. However, I do not have a microphone or a webcam so I am unable to test this function out. If you try this feature out, I’d love to hear about it in the comments. Scriblink is a very simple to use way of communicating with other people.

2. Twiddla

Twiddla is currently my favorite way of working with others and has also been previously covered here at Make Use Of. It’s simple to use, and you don’t even have to register which makes everything faster. This site has a plethora of features. One of the most notable features is that you can visit other websites within Twiddla and mark things up. This is extremely useful if you want to show a worker something you found and is much better than sending the link via mail or something similar.

Here you can draw freehand or use many different shapes to get your message across. You can post sticky notes as well as images you upload. Like Scriblink, you have the option of saving your work and can chat with others via voice or IM. It’s also very easy to invite people to your Twiddla. Just give them the link along with the password (if you choose to set one) and they’ll be able to work together with you. This is a very handy tool with many features that every business person should use to work with others.

As much as I love the tool, I’d like to warn everyone about some problems I’ve been having with Twiddla. I’m not sure if Firefox 3 is causing the problem or if Twiddla itself is causing the problem, but I’ll sometimes lag out or Firefox will remain frozen for a long time. The app runs fine in Internet Explorer, but I hope this ‘problem’ gets fixed because I really don’t want to use IE just for this site. Anyway, it’s definitely worth checking out.

3. Vyew

The final web app I’d like to cover is one called Vyew. Vyew is a nifty site that seems a bit more complicated than both Scriblink and Twiddla, but has a ton of great features you’ll love to use. I’ve just recently discovered the site, and I’ve pretty much fallen in love with it. As soon as I can figure out how to use all the available features, I’m sure I’ll be using Vyew more than Twiddla.

Vyew includes most of the features from both Twiddla and Scriblink, including the option to draw, chat, and print out your work. With Vyew, you will get those options along with many others. Here are just a few awesome features.

The folks at Vyew have made it possible for you to be able to share your screen with others. This way, your co-workers will be able to see exactly what you’re doing.

You can upload much more than just images. The upload feature supports documents, PDFs, Powerpoints, and even FLV videos.

You can take screenshots of your desktop if you’re too paranoid for screen sharing, which works just as well.

There are many plugins that you can add to your Vyew. These plugins include a graphing calculator, Flash Video player, MP3 player, polls, and more.

An innovative feature called the Vyewbook makes it easy to separate your different meeting. One could be for your boss, one could be for your friends. It all depends on you. Within each Vyewbook, you can have many different pages on which to have content. One page could be for all the pictures, and the other could be all the videos/music.

I have tried every of those features except for the screen sharing because I can’t find anyone to share my screen with. The other features work fabulously, and I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed when you use this tool. Granted, it is a little confusing to figure out at first, but looking at the demonstrations really helps.

While Vyew is completely free to use, you’ll get extra benefits if you pay. Without paying, you’re subjected to some ads and limited to 20 users (which is still a lot). You will only be able to have 5 Vyewbooks with 50 pages. You’ll be able to have more users and more Vyewbooks if you pay, but most home users should be content with the free offer.

This tool really is awesome, and I hope you guys enjoy all the features. Just take a few minutes to find all the features. Some are dugg really deep and it took me a while to find all the great things.

Hopefully, these three tools will be able to help you in all sorts of different collaboration problems. You have Scriblink for the simple tasks, Twiddla for most other uses, and the powerful Vyew to tackle even your toughest jobs. I hope you’ll find one you like and stick to it.

Do you know any other great collaboration tools I might have missed? If so, please tell me about it in the comments.

There are so many websites out there that it’s getting harder and harder for developers to come up with a good idea. Since all the ‘good ideas’ have been taken, website owners need to come up with innovative ways to portray their web application.

The problem with this is that many people think these websites are useless because the website is either hard to use, a waste of time, or too different. But there are a lot of sites out there that people should take another look at, even if they do seem to be useless at first. Sites that are in beta will improve overtime, and a “useless” product can turn into the “next big thing”.

Here are a few sites that might be useless at the moment but should be bookmarked for use later on.

1. ʇxǝʇ ɹnoʎ dılɟ (Flip your Text)

What it is: ˙ǝʇɐpdn ǝɹnʇnɟ ɐ uı ǝlqɐlıɐʌɐ ǝq llıʍ ǝɹnʇɐǝɟ ʇɐɥʇ ǝqʎɐɯ ˙ʇǝʎ pǝɹǝpuǝɹ ǝq ʇ’uɐɔ lɐʇıdɐɔ ʇɐɥʇ sı ɯǝlqoɹd ɹǝɥʇouɐ ˙ʇı pɐǝɹ oʇ ǝlqɐ ǝq llıʇs llıʍ ǝldoǝd ʇnq ‘ǝɔɐld ɟo ʇno puɐ pɹıǝʍ ʇıq ɐ ɯǝǝs ʇɥƃıɯ sɹǝʇʇǝl ǝɥʇ ɟo ǝɯos ˙ǝɹǝɥʍǝɯos ʇı ʇsod puɐ ʇxǝʇ uʍop ǝpısdn ǝɥʇ ʎdoɔ ʇsnɾ ʍou ˙punoɹɐ pǝddılɟ ǝq plnoʍ xoq ‘ʇxǝʇ lɐuıƃıɹo’ ǝɥʇ uı pǝdʎʇ noʎ ʇxǝʇ ǝɥʇ ‘ʎlʇuɐʇsuı ˙uoʇʇnq ‘dılɟ’ ǝɥʇ ʞɔılɔ puɐ xoq ‘ʇxǝʇ lɐuıƃıɹo’ ǝɥʇ oʇuı dılɟ oʇ ʇuɐʍ noʎ ɹǝʌǝʇɐɥʍ ǝdʎʇ ʇsnɾ ˙ʇı pɐǝɹ oʇ ɹǝpɹo uı uʍop ǝpısdn sǝʌlǝsɯǝɥʇ uɹnʇ oʇ pǝǝu ǝldoǝd ʇɐɥʇ ʎɐʍ ɐ uı ʇxǝʇ sdılɟ ʇı ˙sǝıldɯı ǝɯɐu ǝɥʇ ʇɐɥʍ sǝop ʇxǝʇ ɹnoʎ dılɟ

Flip your Text does what the name implies. It flips text in a way that people need to turn themselves upside down in order to read it. Just type whatever you want to flip into the ‘Original Text’ box and click the ‘Flip’ button. Instantly, the text you typed in the ‘Original Text’ box would be flipped around. Now just copy the upside down text and post it somewhere. Some of the letters might seem a bit weird and out of place, but people will still be able to read it. Another problem is that capital letters can’t be rendered yet. Maybe that feature will be available in a future update.

Why it seems useless: While it’s extremely cool, there isn’t really a use for for this tool. It’s not like you’d use this when you’re applying for a job or when you want to break up with someone over Facebook. If you were to write an entire blog post with the letters all flipped around, your blog readers are going to scamper away like they’ve seen their boss in pink undergarments.

Why you should bookmark it: Flip your Text is one of the best ways of getting attention. Since it uses a combination of ASCII and UT8 characters, it can be rendered by most websites, which means you can use this just about anywhere, including Twitter and your e-mail. If a title of your blog post is flipped around, it’s going to attract a lot of attention because everyone’s going to be thinking “How did they do that?”. Just make sure you don’t use it too much because it can get annoying…

2. AudioTool

What it is: Hobnox’s Audiotool is a flash based web application where you can create your own music, using the same tools many of the DJ’s in real life use. It’s a place to experiment, fool around, and maybe even learn something. When you start the application, you’ll be brought to a flash page where you’ll see a mixer, three synthesizers, and two rows of pedals that you can play around with. Everything you see can be manipulated. Fool around with knobs, connect tools together, and just have some fun with it. It’s still in beta so things are not perfect yet and you’re not able to save your work, but AudioTool is definitely something fun to play with.

Why it seems useless: Sometimes websites are considered to be useless because it’s just too hard to use. This is one of them. Unlike other hard-to-use tools like Photoshop, the quality of the end product all depends on your skill level. Hardcore Photoshop users are going to argue this matter, but you have to admit that even Photoshop newbies can use basic tools to touch up their pictures. I tried playing around with Audiotool, and made the mistake of turning my speakers up while testing things out. About five minutes later, I got a call from a neighbor telling me to “stop banging the table”. Guess I should have watched the tutorials first…

Why you should bookmark it: This site is still being developed so it might be a while before it becomes a site hardcore users are going to use. At the moment, this is just something for people to begin learning how to use audio equipment and also a place to fool around. Later on, the tool will really help people who don’t have the money to buy the equipment, and once Version 2.0 comes out and users can save their work, this tool is going to be embraced by everyone interested in creating music. If you’re going to create something in AudioTool, just be sure to watch the tutorials.

3. Dipity

What it is: Dipity is the King of timelines. It’s a great web tool that you can set up to keep track of all your feeds (including RSS, Twitter, Flickr, blogs, Last.fm, and more) and Dipity will make a visual timeline of what you do with your life. The timeline doesn’t have to be personal either; you can create one about a topic (like internet memes) and invite others to add to the timeline.

The only bad thing is that the amount of information available depends on how much information is in the RSS feed. If the RSS feed only shows a few articles, your timeline isn’t going to be that long. If you don’t like the way the timeline is organized, you can click on the other tabs and display all the information in a list, a flipbook, or in a map.

Why it seems useless: While most people would agree that this is a great idea, they don’t really see how it can be used. Yes, you can load it up with all your RSS feeds, but what good is it if you’ve already seen all the articles already? Looking at old articles or old Twitter posts isn’t going to do you any good. You’d just be wasting your time looking at things you have already seen before.

Why you should bookmark it: Dipity is one of those websites that are as useful as you want them to be. If you decide to put up feeds you read daily, then the timeline that you make isn’t going to be useful to you. However, if you decide to put up feeds of specific websites, you can make the timeline do whatever you want it to do. Here are some suggestions on using Dipity.

- Add in RSS feeds of websites you really like but don’t have the time to look at everyday. Then you can visit Dipity each week and catch up on what you missed.

- Create a timeline of current events (such as the presidential election or the war in Iraq) or just find one already made and add your own links to it. If the links are good, then you can stay up to date with all the info.

- Be a creep and use this as a tool for stalking others. Just type in the username someone uses and you’re all set.

Another cool thing about Dipity is that you can embed a timeline into your blog or website. Here’s one of Make Use Of…

The folks at Dipity have also created a site called TimeTube, a site where you can search for YouTube videos and the results are displayed on a Dipity timeline based on time and popularity. You can read the previous Make Use Of review of TimeTube here.

4. Midomi

What it is: Midomi is an extremely innovative music search engine. Instead of searching for music using keywords and names, you can find songs using your own voice. Remember that beat you just can’t get out of your head but don’t remember the name of the song? No problem, Midomi will find it for you. To start a search, just click on the search button and allow Midomi access to your microphone. Then you can then hum, sing, whistle, or burp a song and Midomi will try to find it for you. Once you’ve found the song, you can listen to how others sing it, buy it from iTunes, or watch videos of it.

Like AudioTool, this site is in beta and needs some improvement but it works pretty well. I tested it out by “singing” (or what least trying to sing) three songs. It found two of the songs, but missed the last one. Midomi will only work if there have been previous members who have sung the entire song. The more users there are, the better the search results because Midomi matches your tune to the tunes in its database.

Why it seems useless: It takes a while to set things up, and searching for something only takes a few moments. It’s not exactly the most accurate tool on the block either. If you accidentally sing the song wrong, you’re going to get bad results. Besides, it’s not often that you can’t remember any words at all. As long as you remember a few sentences in a song, you can just put it into quotes and search it up on a regular search engine. Going through the hassle of setting up your microphone for Midomi seems like a waste of time.

Why you should bookmark it: Midomi is one of the most innovative sites I’ve ever seen. I can imagine other websites following in Midomi’s steps and use voice as a means of search. Even though people might not be using it as a search engine, you can still enjoy the site. You can sing your favorite songs, and each song you sing will improve the searching experience of others. If others like the way you sing, you could become a Midomi star getting your own place on the website. Test it out, you’d be surprised on how accurate it is.

5. Other Goodies

Having already written about four awesome sites that you’re probably going to use a lot, I think it’s time to mention a few useless sites you might never use, but you’re going to want to take a look at. The first one was brought to my attention by Aibek. He showed me this great site called Hencam where you watch chickens. That’s right. It’s an entire website dedicated to watching chickens in real time, don’t what they normally do. Useless? Yep. Cool as heck? Totally.

Another site that I pretty ashamed of of admitting I’ve used before is called Cheddar Vision. It has the same concept as Hencam, but instead of watching chickens, you watch a 500 pound chunk of cheese mold. Exciting, isn’t it? If you notice, the people at Cheddar Vision have Facebook, Myspace, and YouTube groups. If you’re interested in moldy cheese, be sure to add them on whatever network you’re on. If you go onto the website, you’ll also notice a little counter that tells you how long the cheese has been molding. There is another counter at the bottom that shows how many people have visited the site. (I sure am glad that there are over 1 million others out there who watch cheese just like me.)

There you are. These sites might still seem a bit useless to you, but I still hope you’ll take the time to check them out. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find them to be the coolest sites you’ve seen. Try them out and tell me what you think. Do you know another site that others think is useless but you use anyway? Tell me about it in the comments.

A few months back, Aibek wrote a great post on hiding all those ‘important folders’ you might have lying around your desktop. His method is perfect if someone is snooping around your desktop looking for your things.

But what would you do if someone barges into your workspace when you are in the middle of doing ‘important things’? Would you just have to live with the embarrassment?

Luckily, I’ve discovered quite a few ways of getting yourself out of that nasty predicament.

1. Hide Window Hotkey

‘Hide Window Hotkey’ is a nifty little program that has the sole purpose of hiding those naughty important windows you have open. Just download and install the program and you’ll be all set. It has a very simple to follow User Interface and the program does exactly what it’s supposed to. Just check the box of the open program(s) you’d like to hide and you’re done.

In the Options menu (Ctrl+O) you can set the hotkey for hiding and un-hiding to be whatever you want it to be. The default is F8 to hide the selected windows, and Ctrl+F8 to unhide the windows.

You’re also given the option to hide things with your mouse, which is what I usually do. Just click both the left and right mouse buttons and your window will be hidden. This is a very innovative tool and is completely free to use. However, if you do like the software, be sure to send some donations to Elongsoft for creating such an awesome program.

2. Workfriendly

Unlike the other methods mentioned here, Workfriendly doesn’t give you a way to hide your work quickly. Rather, it’s a website that will mask whatever you’re looking at inside a window that looks exactly like Microsoft Word 2003. This way, you can look at whatever website you want without your boss knowing because to them, it just looks like you’re typing something in Word. Although this seems like a great idea, there are some slight problems with it. The main thing I noticed was that it doesn’t display pictures or video so it’s not going to be useful when you’re watching YouTube videos or looking at Flickr. Another problem was that you can’t designate how large you want the Word window to be, so it’ll be perfect for those people at work who have small 800×600 screens.

Another great feature included is the little ‘Boss Key’ button at the top. Just hover your mouse over it and the page you’re on will be transformed into an article about procrastination. I doubt you’ll be using it much because websites are only displayed in words anyways. Workfriendly is a great website, especially for those addicted to reading blogs. Now you can read Make Use Of at work without being detected by your boss.

3. Virtual Desktop Managers (VirtuaWin)

This is my favorite way of hiding things from others, and the great thing is that Virtual Desktop Managers can also be used to actually get some work done. Virtual Desktop Managers are programs that allow you to have multiple desktops within your own desktop, making it easier to work on separate projects.

For example, you could have games on one desktop, blogs on another, and whatever you’re working on on the third desktop. It’s really a handy way of organizing your desktop. The best thing about it is that you can use most Virtual Desktop Managers to hide your active windows from those prying eyes.

You can use any Virtual Desktop Manager you want, but it’s best if you choose one that supports shortcuts. My personal favorite is VirtuaWin (previously covered by Aibek) although you can use whichever you want. For those that are using VirtuaWin, just download and install the program. Next, you’ll want to go into ‘Setup’ and click on the ‘Mouse’ tab. Then check the box that says ‘Enable Mouse Desktop Changing’ and hit ‘OK’.

Then, you can have all work-related things on one desktop and everything else on a separate desktop. Whenever someone barges into your room, you just need to move the mouse to the edge of the screen and the desktop will change. No more jumping and scrambling to press certain hotkeys. You can now browse whatever you want without being worried about getting caught.

4. Make use of what you have.

Excluding Workfriendly, the methods of hiding active windows I’ve discussed all require you to download and install some programs. Unluckily for most of us in a workplace, you’re not given the rights to download and install programs. Of course, we could still use Workfriendly, but I’d still want to watch people on YouTube hurt themselves and make myself feel better when I’m working. So, I thought it would be useful to develop a set of directions for being about to hide your windows without needing to download other tools.

(1) First off, set up your desktop the way it would be when you’re actually working on something. Take a screenshot of the screen using the ‘PrtScn’ button located at the top right of most keyboards.

(2) Open up MS Paint and paste the screenshot. Then save it to the desktop or somewhere easy to access.

(3) Right click on the image and set it as the background.

(4) Hide your desktop icons by right clicking anywhere on the desktop and un-checking ‘Show Desktop Icons’.

(5) Hide the taskbar by right clicking on it and hitting the ‘Properties’ button. Then check the box that says ‘Auto Hide the Taskbar’.

After doing all that, you should be able to look at whatever you want. If someone decides to be snobby and peeks at your screen, quickly hit ‘Window Key + D’ to minimize everything. As long as the person doesn’t examine your screen closely, it’ll just look like you’re working.

Hopefully, these methods can help you avoid the embarrassment of being caught looking at odd things at work. Do you know a great way of hiding your work? Talk about it in the comments!
