With the Twitter fail whale popping up all the time, you never know when something tragic might happen. No one want to lose all of their Twitter tweets, followers, or anything else for that matter. That’s why it’s a good idea to backup your Twitter archive on a regular basis in case of a Twitter mishap. As we all know, there has been numerous times in the past where users have lost followers, tweets, and DMs. Fortunately, you can make sure this doesn’t happen to you by using one of the following methods to backup your Twitter archive.

Tweetake

Enter your Twitter username and password.

Select what you’d like to backup (followers, favorites, DMs, friends, tweets, or everything).

Click the “Get ‘em!” button.

Choose where you’d like to save the file on your computer.

Open the file an you will get an Excel document that looks similar to the screenshot below.

TweetBackup

Signup using Twitter oAuth which will let TweetBackup access your Twitter account.

You will then need to then enter your email address.

Once you’re logged in, you can add as many “profiles” (aka accounts) as you like.

You can then export your backup file, view your archived posts, restore a profile and change your settings via the different tabs.

Since TweetBackup is fairly new, a few features are not yet supported but will be in the near future.

TwitterBackup

Download and open the Java application.

Once the window pops up, enter your Twitter username and password.

In the ‘file name’ field you’ll need to enter the name that you’d like your file to be saved as. If you are just updating a pre-existing file then just enter the current file name.
Note: Make sure you have a .xml extension on the file name.

Enter a proxy if necessary – only if you connect to the Internet through a proxy.

If you have a lot of tweets to backup, it will take a little while since the program takes 1-minute breaks between each page of tweets that you have (It took 20 minutes for me.).

FriendBackup

Click on the launch button.
Note: You will need Java 6 to run this program.

Save and open the file then wait for it to download.

After running the file, a small window will open up.

Click on the backup tab and enter your Twitter username and password.

Then you can select what you’d like to backup (following, followers, DMs, tweets, and/or favorites).

You can also view your stats and export your backup file.

Twitter XML

TweetCrunch also has a handy method for backing up your Twitter friends and followers in three simple steps. You simple save an XML file from your browser and then open it in Microsoft Excel or any other spreadsheet software. If you’re looking for the quickest method to backup your Twitter archive, this is probably it. Below you can see how the table appears in Excel.

TwitterSafe

If you’re looking for a newer method, there’s also TwitterSafe beta that is currently “down for maintenance” and has been for the past week. I’m not sure when they’ll be back online but it might be worth a try. Keep an eye for them.

There are hundreds of free image editors out there for your computer, many of which are known as “bloatware” since they are bloated with unecessary features. Sometimes you just want a light, simple program that doesn’t take forever to load and will let you do a few simple tasks. Well, here is a list of 8 simple free Photoshop alternatives under 2MB that will save you time and headache.

So enter Free Photoshop alternatives

Fotografix (616KB)

Fotografix is an image editor that can be used to enhance, adjust and add filters to images as well as retouching photos. Fotografix does allow you to use layers so that you can even create basic graphic designs and transparent backgrounds. Since the file size is so small and doesn’t require installation, Fotografix can be run from a USB drive. There is support for a large range of different image formats. Fotografix also allows you to use scripts which automate frequently repeated tasks.

Splashup Light (93.5KB)

Splashup Light is the lighter version of the more advanced, full version of Splashup. It is an Adobe AIR application that allows you to edit and add effects to photos with numerous creative tools. With Splashup light you can open a file on your computer or take a picture straight from your webcam to edit. There is also a great pan tool that lets you move your image around for the best view. Along with being able to add shapes and text to images, you can resize, crop, rotate and flip.

i.Mage (850KB)

i.Mage is a unique small yet fast graphics editor that lets you do easy and precise pixel editing. It’s not weighed down with a lot of plugins so the program actually starts in under a second. i.Mage is definitely the right tool for the quick and simple tasks. You can either start a new project from scratch or from the contents of your clipboard. There is a two-pane view so that you can see the full image on one side and the pixilated image on the other. i.Mage might be small and simple but it’s loaded with great tools and features.

Paint.net (1.6MB)

Paint.NET is actually a personal favorite of mine that I’ve been using for a few years now and is a GIMP competitor. Even though it’s lightweight, it allows you to do a lot of advanced enhancements and adjustments. Paint.net also supports layers and even has an unlimited undo feature. If you are looking for more adjustments, effects and/or enhancements, there are quite a few plugins that you can install to do just what you’re looking for.

IrfanView (1.28MB)

IrfanView is another great tool that lets you view, convert and optimize images. You can do more advanced things like creating slideshows, batch processing, and playing sounds and movies. You can view just about any file format with IrfanView. Plus, it also supports plugins and even has different toolbar skins so that you can change the look of your toolbar. Though IrfanView has less emphasis on image editing and more on image viewing, it’s still one of the best in its league.

Easy Photo Editor (1.25MB)

When you download Easy Photo Editor you will have the trial version which has a 6 images limit per process; the full version is $29.95. The title definitely fits the program, as it’s very limited in features. Easy Photo Editor lets you view, edit, and enhance your photos to a certain extent. It supports the major graphic formats like BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and multipage TIFF. You can also convert, resize, rotate, and stamp text or graphics onto your photos in batch mode. Lastly, Easy Photo Editor makes it easy for you to email your edited images via the Internet.

Free Image Editor (1.39MB)

Free Image Editor is a another simple bitmap image editor that lets you retouch photos or create original graphics. You have the choice of starting a new project from scratch, opening a file, capturing the current window, scanning an image from your scanner, or using the contents of your clipboard. What I really like about Free Image Editor is the built in capturing tool for taking screenshots. You can capture the desktop, a selection, the active window or an object in a window. Free Image Editor also provides a rich set of graphics tools that can be used for digital photography such as raster and paint tools.

PhotoFiltre (1.6MB)

PhotoFiltre is great for retouching and adjusting images as well as applying filters. There are numerous filters that you can use such as soften, sharpen, noise, relief, color, artistic, and much more. There are also numerous adjustment options as well. PhotoFiltre also uses two types of selection tools one which uses automatic shapes and the other which is a lasso and polygon tool. These tools allow for great customized drawing and even lets you save each selection as a separate file.

Is there a certain image editor that you like better? Which is your favorite? Please let us know in the comments.

I have been using Windows Live Writer 2009 for about a month now; for me, it was love at first use. If you haven’t used it before you should really take advantage of the new Windows Live Writer.

For me, Windows Live Writer really makes blogging enjoyable and I especially love the ability to add plugins. There is an extensive list in the Windows Live Gallery but these are the 7 that, in my opinion, are a must have for Windows Live Writer users.

But before we begin, I strongly recommend you check out earlier MakeUseOf article Five Things To Do After Installing Windows Live Writer. It shows you how to

- Turn on Spell Check
- Use Link Glossary
- Configure FTP
- Learn the Shortcuts
- Set Blog Pings

Now, back to plugins.

Flickr4Writer

If you use Flickr for uploading and sharing your photos then this is a great plugin for you. With Flickr4Writer you can browse photos from your own account as well as anyone else and then insert the images into your blog post. You can choose to search all images, photosets, or certain tags. One you find an image that you like, you can then specify how you’d like it to appear in your post. You can customize the alignment, spacing, border, CSS class, and you can even choose whether or not to include a link to the image.

xPollinate

DiggThis

This is a very simple plugin that allows you to manually add a Digg button or badge to your blog posts. There are 4 styles to choose from and can set it for right or left alignment.

Tag Generator

This plugin automatically generates tags based on the content of your blog post. Tag Generator allows you to generate tags for Technorati, Windows Live Writer, WordPress, and Blogger. After selecting all of your blog text and clicking on “Generate Tags” your next step will be to edit them. As you can see below, you can modify, delete and add tags. Even though this plugin is more geared toward beginning bloggers, it’s still a tool that can come in handy for anyone.

The final 2 plugins are personal favorites of mine; I definitely could not live without either.

Text Template

This plugin is a must for anyone who uses repeated text or html in their blog posts such as banners, signatures or an invitation for readers to leave comments. With Text Template you can create and save templates containing text and/or html for later use, and then quickly and easily insert them into your posts. Templates that you create can also be put into categories to make them easier to find if you have a lot saved.

Screen Capture

Currently there are 4 screen capture plugins available but this one is by far my favorite and the easiest to use in my opinion. First you’ll need to decide and specify if you want to capture the full screen, browser window, or a customized area. Whatever you choose to capture, it will automatically appear in your blog post. Once inserted you can customize the layout, size, rotate, crop, tilt, contrast, watermark and even add special effects. If you use WordPress, when publishing or saving your blog post these images will be uploaded to your media gallery.

Which plugins do you use and which are your favorite? Please feel free to let us know in the comments.

With the economy in such a poor state, more and more people are finding it extremely hard to find a job. Sadly, it can literally take months to even be contacted about a job let alone find one, thus resulting in the job hunting blues.

Even though it can get extremely frustrating (I know first hand), the best thing you can do is not give up and keep searching on a consistent basis. If you’ve tried all the usual places like CareerBuilder and Monster and had no luck, here are 8 more that will hopefully get the ball rolling for you.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is definitely growing in popularity for job searching. When searching for jobs, you have the option view jobs that are exclusively on LinkedIn or jobs from the Web.

My favorite thing about LinkedIn is the ability to send and receive recommendations from co-workers and peers. Recommendations are the best way for a company to learn more about you from the people that know you best.

Of course, a complete and up-to-date profile will also give you a better chance of being recruited by employers.

Indeed

Indeed is one of the job search engines I use regularly and is very easy to use. To start, simply enter the type of job you’re looking for and the desired location. There are a lot of options for refining your results such as by salary estimate, title, company, location and more. You can also save any search as an email alert or subscribe to the RSS feed.

As you can see below, Indeed also has extensive advanced search features.

Yahoo! HotJobs

Many people already know about Yahoo! HotJobs. If you have a Yahoo! account, once logged in you will have the pleasure of seeing recommended jobs for you right on the homepage. Also, just like Indeed you can save your search as en email job alert.

What I like best about HotJobs is that you can hide jobs from certain companies. The only downside to that is that there’s a limit of 20 companies so, you can’t hide anymore than that.

TwitterJobSearch

Since Twitter is growing more popular each day, there’s no surprise that there’s a Twitter job search engine. To start just enter the type of job you’re looking for and location (optional) or, click the “Browse” button up top to browse by category. Jobs are listed as tweets so you can see who tweeted it and when. You then have the option to view the actual job listing, retweet it, or follow the user that tweeted it.

SimplyHired

SimplyHired powers a lot of the job search engines that you can find on numerous social networks such as LinkedIn, MySpace, and Plaxo. Once again, searches can be saved as email alerts or you can subscribe to the RSS feed.

SimplyHired goes a step further than Yahoo! Hotjobs with the blocking feature; you can block all jobs from a certain company or from a certain website. The best feature, in my opinion, is the option to allow access to your LinkedIn account. By doing this, you can make connections with others that work at a company you’re applying to.

LinkUp

LinkUp is one of the most unique search engines I’ve seen mainly because everything is done in the same window; no need to open other tabs or windows. After getting your search results, clicking on a listing will open it up a new tab (as pictured below) in the same window, which saves you time and helps reduce screen clutter. You can also apply to jobs right in the same window. From within the LinkUp tabs you can then view other jobs from the same company, view or make connections from LinkedIn (just like SimplyHired) or pick a suggested category.

Craigslist

A well known site for everything from selling items to finding an apartment, Craigslist is also a great site for job hunting. With Craigslist you can search by specific cities and regions.

What I like about Craigslist is that you don’t have to sign up in order to search or respond to listings. Most listings include an email, so applying for a job is as easy as clicking the email link, writing a quick message and attaching your resume. The job section is broken down by categories and you can even subscribe to the RSS feed for a certain category so that you can stay updated on new job listings.

NotchUp

NotchUp is also very unique in that it serves as your own personal career agent. Although it is free to join and use, membership is by application or invitation only. Once you are a member, NotchUp allows you to set a price of what your time is worth and upload your resume. From there, your only job is to sit back and wait to be contacted by potential employers.

Once contacted, these companies will then have to pay you to interview with them. Yes, you heard that right, you get paid to interview for jobs! Applying for membership literally takes 30 seconds, as you can see below there’s not much to fill in.

I wish everyone the best of luck with their job searches. If you know of any other great sites for job hunting please feel free to let us know in the comments.

There are numerous sites and tools online that allow you to make free phone calls online but many of them do not allow you to make international calls. Most instant messaging services like Yahoo and Google Talk now come with an option to make PC-to-PC voice calls with your contacts although reception on these services are often unreliable.

So here are a few services to get you going and have you making international calls in a matter of minutes.

EvaPhone

EvaPhone, allows you to make free PC-to-phone calls anywhere in the world. There is nothing to download and there’s no sign up required. To get started you simply follow the link and enter the country and number that you want to call. Evaphone is definitely one of the easiest free phone tools available on the Net.

PokeTalk

PokeTalk provides totally free domestic and international calls to over 55 countries via your own phone. So, you will need your own phone number in order to use the service. Since PokeTalk is an ad-sponsored service, there are no fees whatsoever plus there is no download required.

A great feature that PokeTalk includes is the ability to connect to Facebook. When you make a call, an update with the country you dialed will be added to your Facebook profile. They also provide a widget that you can add to your website and will allow your visitors to make free calls from your site.

FreeRinger

FreeRinger allows you to make free calls to more than 30 countries worldwide. Calls are made from an easy to use widget right in your browser, so there are no downloads required. Also, you can receive calls from regular and Internet (SIP) phones.

FreeRinger also has an unique feature that allows you to have “speed dial hyperlinks”. Meaning you can save phone numbers as links and then bookmark them for easy access later.

YouTring

With YouTring you can make free PC-to-phone and free PC-to-PC calls. It’s not totally free but they do offer very low international calling plans. Their calling plans range from $25 – $100 and they claim that you’ll never have to worry about bad reception or interrupted calls.

In order to use the service, you will need to download a fairly small file to your computer.

Globe7

Globe7 also has a lot of unique features and is a great tool for those that like online entertainment. This handy tool can be used for more than just making free calls. With Globe 7 you can watch videos, play games, watch live TV, listen to live radio, send SMS messages, upload and share files, and so much more. To get started, you will need to download the program to your computer.

What’s also great about Globe7 is that it’s not only for Windows users, Mac and Linux users can enjoy it as well. Plus, there’s also a mobile version that’s free to download.

Flaphone

Flaphone is one of the most interesting web-based telephones I’ve come across; you can make and receive calls using the service. You will need to sign up but it’s very quick and easy.

Calls can be made straight from the website so, there’s no downloads required. If you prefer though, they do have an AIR application that you can also use from your desktop.

Flaphone allows you to not only make calls to SIP and regular phones but you can also call any Skype user. As an added bonus, you can also make video calls with Flaphone as well as use it as an instant messenger.

You will need Adobe Flash Player version 9 or higher in order to use the service.

Which online service do you use to make free international calls? Which service mentioned above do you plan on trying? Please let us know in the comments.

Did you like the post? Please do share your thoughts in the comments section!

Have you ever wanted to delete an account only to find that no matter how hard you look, you can’t find the option to do that anywhere? Me too. Isn’t it funny how it only takes a few seconds to create an account on these sites but it often takes forever to find out how to delete the account?

I guess it’s because they want us to stay forever but sometimes you just really don’t like the site or maybe you are trying to clean up your accounts (because you have so many all over the net).

Whatever the reason may be, I’m sure you’ll find that this little cheat sheet will make deleting those unwanted accounts quick, easy and painless.

Yahoo

There are two ways to delete your Yahoo account. The first way is to totally abandon it for at least four months. Inactive Yahoo accounts are deactivated after four months so if you’re in no rush to get rid of it, you can simply stop using it.

The other way to delete your Yahoo account is to visit the Account Termination page.

Log into your Yahoo account. If you’re already logged in you may have to re-enter your password just for verification purposes.

Click here to get to the Account Termination page.

Facebook

Facebook offers two options. You can either deactivate your account or permanently delete it. Of course, the deactivation method is much easier to find than the permanent deletion option. One thing you should know is that if you deactivate your Facebook account, your profile information will still be saved such as your friends, photos, interests, etc. On the other hand, permanently deleting your account will remove all of your information from Facebook and nothing will be saved.

To deactivate your account:

Hover your mouse over the Settings menu in the top right of any Facebook page and click on “Account Settings”.

Click on the “Deactivate Account” link at the bottom of the page.

To permanently delete your account:

Click on Help at the bottom of any Facebook page.

Search for “delete account” in the search box underneath the Help Center heading.

Click on the “I want to permanently delete my account” link and read the 2 paragraphs there.

Click on the link at the end of the last paragraph, read what’s there and then click the “Submit” button.

Click here for the easy route.

MySpace

MySpace makes things a little bit easier, no searching needed.

Click on “My Account” in the top right corner of any MySpace page.

Click on the “Account” link.

Click on the “Cancel Account” link at the bottom of the page.

Select the reason why you want to cancel your account, and then click the “Cancel My Account” button.

Click here for the easy route.

Ning

One thing about Ning is that even when you delete your account, the content that you’ve added to any social networks you were a part of will remain on those networks. If you don’t want your content to remain, you’ll have to delete it yourself. An easy way to do that is to simply leave each network you belong to separately before deleting your actual Ning account.

In order to leave a social network on Ning:

Sign into the network.

Click on the “My Settings” link in the top of the right hand column.

Click on the “Leave (Social Network Name Here)” link at the bottom of that page.

To leave the Ning network altogether you will have to contact Ning by clicking here. There is no option in the “I have a question about” menu for deleting an account so you will have to pick which one you think fits best.

MSN

Just like Yahoo there are two ways to delete your MSN account. You can either stop using your account for 30 days or delete it manually. After 30 days of non-use your MSN account will become inactive and after 90 days your passport will become inactive.

To manually delete your MSN account:

Click on the little arrow next to your name in the top right corner of any Hotmail page.

Click on the “View Your Account” menu option.

Click on the “Close Account” link at the bottom of the page.

Read the info, enter your password to verify your identity and then click on the “Yes” button.

Click here for the easy route.

Twitter

Note: If there are issues with Twitter, the option to delete you account will be disabled and you’ll get an alert message like the one picture below. So, hopefully Twitter is in good shape if and when you try to delete your account.

Click on the “Settings” link in the top right corner of any Twitter page.

Click on the “Delete My Account” link at the bottom left side of the page.

Confirm that you want to delete your account.

Click here for the easy route.

FriendFeed

FriendFeed is another site that makes you do a little searching before being able to delete your account.

Click on the “help” link at the bottom of any FriendFeed page.

Click on the “Using FriendFeed” header to expand it.

Click on the “How do I delete my account?” link which will be the last link under that section.

Enter your password in the first box, type the word “delete” in the next box, enter the reason why you’re deleting your account in the last box.

Click on the “Permanently delete my account” button.

Click here for the easy route.

Jaiku

Jaiku has the account deletion option right where you’d expect it to be.

Click on the “Settings” link in the top right of any Jaiku page.

Click on the “Your Profile” link under the Account heading.

Click on the “Want to delete your account?” link at the bottom of the page.

Click on the “Goodbye Cruel World, Goodbye” button.

Click here for the easy route.

If there are any other websites that we haven’t mentioned here, why don’t you tell us how to cancel an account on that site?

FleeQ offers an easy to use aggregated search engine and also allows website and blog owners the ability to monetize their sites and receive targeted traffic. FleeQ delivers search results from all the major search engines. You can also quickly integrate FleeQ into your Firefox browser search bar.

As you begin to type your search terms into the FleeQ search bar, suggested topics will appear below it. You can choose to click on one of the suggested search topics or continue with your own and press enter.

When viewing your search results, you’ll notice a web page in the background and a search results widget in the forefront. The background page is actually how FleeQ displays their ads and also how you can make money. These full page ads are what they call their “revolutionary patent pending ad type called the Ancillary Ads, which delivers full page traffic directly to your website.”

The unique search results widget that they use is patent pending and is displayed using sponsor skins and WordSpots, which are pretty much like AdWords. The search results widgets shows you search results from four difference sources and gives the option to make another search right from the widget.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering how does this allow you to make money using your own site? Well, much like the Google AdSense for Search, FleeQ supplies you with a search widget that you can add to your website or blog. First, you’ll need to create a FleeQ account. Once you log in, it’s as easy as following the prompts to copy and paste the code to your site.

FleeQ does require that you run the search on your site for a small period of time, so that they can collect the analytics needed so that you can start receiving targeted traffic. Don’t worry though because in the meantime, you will be earning free traffic from their unique traffic exchange.

One great thing about using FleeQ on your site is that you can choose whether or not you want to receive more traffic or more revenue. Your FleeQ dashboard is also set up a lot like Google Analytics, providing you with very in-depth website statistics.

There are two ways to earn with FleeQ:

CPC – You will be paid by CPC (cost per click) for WordSpot shown on your Search Results Widget.

CPM – You will be paid by CPM (cost per impression) for qualifying campaigns showing Ancillary Ads, Sponsored Search Skins, and/or WordSpots on your Search Results Widgets.

So as you can see, FleeQ is not only a great search engine but it’s also a great way to earn a little extra money with one (or more) of your websites and/or blogs. FleeQ definitely brings a lot of unique features to the table.

I’m very eager to hear about how this works for you. If you do decide to try it out or have already, please feel free to share your experience in the comments.

What do you think of FleeQ? Is this something that you would use or is it just another attempt at trying to be the next Google Adsense? Please share your opinions in the comments.

Are you always looking for new ways to build your Twitter followers for personal use, business use, or both? New Twitter tools and sites are popping up each day, and very quickly.

So, I wanted to point out a few of the newer sites that have surfaced and are very useful in helping you find people to follow on Twitter.

Twitterel

Twitterel is a great way to find Twitter users with the same interests as you and is very easy to use. To get started you’ll need to enter your Twitter username and password. Once you do that, you can enter keywords based on your interests in order to start finding people.

You can even give them your email so that you will be updated whenever there might be someone new that interests you. What’s great about Twitterel is that you can follow people that you find right from their site, without having to open up a new page to go to Twitter to follow them.

CityTweets

“The CityTweets Network is made up of individual pages that track (near) real-time Twitter activity for individual cities, listing Tweets from and about that area.”

CityTweets is still pretty new so there are not a lot of cities listed but it’s extremely easy to request a CityTweets page for your city.

Personally I don’t know too many people from my area who actually use Twitter, so I feel that CityTweets can really be beneficial once it’s really built up. I’d love to be able to tweet to others in my area about how boring it is! Also, it could be a great way to organize a local Tweet Up.

Just Tweet It

Just Tweet It is not only a directory for Twitter users but they’re THE directory for Twitter users! Since the directory is organized by category, it’s the perfect way to find other Twitter users like you and with the same interests.

What I love most about Just Tweet It is that they have quite a few feature spots on their homepage. There’s a spot for a Featured Tweeter, Newest Tweeters, Recent Blog Posts, and Latest News & Links. You also have the option to add your own name to the directory so that you can get found by other Twitter users like yourself.

Twitter Adder

Twitter Adder is pretty much like one of the hundreds of MySpace Adders they have on the internet. You enter your Twitter username and password and then they will add 20 random friends for you. Now, I’m not sure if Twitter Adder is a good thing or a bad thing but it’s not my style. I like to pick and choose who I follow to make sure we have at least a little something in common. I’m not sure if adding random people is such a good idea. What do you think?

Twannabe

Twannabe is a little different in that it lets you see who your “Twitter hero” is following (that you’re not following) so that you can then in turn follow them. I guess it’s nice if there’s someone on Twitter that you really want to be like; hopefully the people that they follow will interest you as well.

You’ll need to enter your Twitter username and password along with the username of your “Twitter hero” and then the magic begins. Next to each person in the list is a follow button but, unlike Twitterel (above), it opens up a new page to the users Twitter profile and you have to follow them from there.

Monitter

Monitter was covered here on Make Use Of already a few months back and I really feel that it’s a great tracking tool for finding new people to follow. You can monitor numerous keywords at a time, kind of like Twitterel (above).

The difference with Monitter is that everything is updated in real-time. So, you can see new tweets as they are posted. In my opinion, this is definitely one of the best tools out there for monitoring what’s being talked about on Twitter.

Twitter Search

Many people already know and use Twitter Search on a regular basis; I practically live on this site. Twitter Search is another great way to find out what’s being talked about on Twitter. I use it all the time to find others who are tweeting about things that I’m interested in.

Though it’s not updated in real-time, it does let you know when there is a new tweet about what you’re searching for along with the amount of new tweets that have been added. If you have Greasemonkey installed though, there is a great userscript that will allow Twitter Search to auto-refresh so that you won’t have to keep refreshing it manually.

Twubble

“Twubble can help expand your Twitter bubble – it searches your friend graph and picks out people who you may like to follow.”

Twubble has actually been around for awhile but I still feel it deserves to be on this list just because of how easy and useful it is. You can follow users straight from the Twubble site – in one click. Twubble also adds a Google icon next to each user which allows you to Google them (opens in a new page).

Follow Cost

Follow Cost is fairly new and adds a little twist; it shows you how annoying it would be to follow someone on Twitter. I think Follow Cost works best in conjunction with one of the above mentioned sites.

Once you find someone you’re interested in following, you can check them out here to make sure they’re not a “Nuclear Follow Cost” (which is not good by the way). You’ll see the Average Updates per day and Last 100 Updates per day for them. This info can then help you to make an educated decision on whether you’d like to follow that user or not.

Which sites or tools do you use to find new people to follow on Twitter? Which one is your favorite? Which one have you found the most useful?

Are you one of those internet users who is addicted to Yahoo and will only use Google if you can’t find it on Yahoo? Well, I know a quite a few people like that but after showing them all that you can do with Google, they were very quick and eager to switch.

A lot of people complain about Google but you have to give them credit, their search functions are some of the best around right now. So, since there’s so much that you can do with Google Search, I decided to share a few shortcuts with you that I’m sure will come in handy.

Package Tracking

When tracking packages, most people head straight to the shipping site such as FedEx, UPS, or USPS to see details. But did you know that now you can enter tracking numbers right into the Google search box?

First you’ll need the tracking number of your order, which you can get from the actual site/company that you ordered from. Second you’ll need to know how it’s being shipped (via FedEx, UPS, or USPS). That’s it.

If your package is being shipped by FedEx, you would enter “fedex 121212121212” into the Google search box. If your package is being shipped by UPS, you would enter “ups 121212121212” into the Google search box. If your package is being shipped by USPS, you would enter “usps 121212121212” into the Google search box. Of course, in all three cases you would use your actual tracking number in place of “121212121212″.

Below I’ve entered the tracking number of a USPS order I want to track. If the tracking number is valid, you’ll see an image of a package show up with a link to view the tracking information for your order. Clicking on it will then take you to the site (in this case USPS) in order to see the full details.

Flight Tracking

You can look up information on any flight by simply typing the airline name or code followed by a space and flight number into the Google search box.

Below I’ve entered the name of an airline and the flight number that I’d like information on. If the flight information you enter is valid, you’ll see an image of an airplane along with brief stats of the flight. You’re also given a link that you can click on to see more detailed information from the actual site the stats were taken from.

Calculations & Conversions

Do you often find yourself reaching for a calculator to figure out simple calculations? I don’t know about you but I do not keep a calculator handy and I often go through at least 3 steps to open up the Windows calculator. Well there’s no need to do either when you have Google handy.

To use Google’s built-in calculator functions, you simply enter the calculations that you’d like solved right in the search box. You can even do more advanced math functions such as geometry and trigonometry. If you don’t remember what all the advanced math functions are don’t worry about it, there’s a very handy Google Quick Reference Cheat Sheet that you can use. This Cheat Sheet shows you all of the things that you can type into the Google Search Box in order to calculate basic or advanced math functions.

The Cheat Sheets also has a list of Units of Measures and Conversions that can be used to converts units and currency. In order to calculate conversions you would type in things like: three quarters of a cup in teaspoons; 130 lbs in kg; 65 mph in kph; 1500 in hex; 64 in binary; etc.

Weather

Finding out the weather in Google is pretty easy. You simply type the word “weather” followed by the city and state, zip code, or city and country. So, below I searched for the weather in Fort Riley, Kansas and Google gave me the current weather along with a forecast for the next 4 days.

Time

If you have family or friends in other parts of the world, you can easily find out what time it is in their area. You simply type the word “time” followed by the name of the city or country and Google will show you the time, day, and time zone for that location. Personally, this really comes in handy for me since I have a husband that will be deployed soon and all of my family and friends are in 2 different time zones from myself.

Dictionary

This is definitely something that comes in handy for me a lot as well. You can see the definition for any word or phrase by simply typing “definition” followed by a space and then the actual word(s) that you wanted defined. If you want to see a list of definitions from various resources across the Web, type “define:” followed by a space and the word(s). As you can see below, you’re given multiple definitions along with the website from where they were taken from.

Movies

Google allows you to quickly find show times for movies playing in your area. You can do this by simply typing in the word “movies” or the film title followed by your zip code in the Google search box. You will then get a list of up to two theaters; if there are more than two theaters listed, you can click the “More theaters” link to see the rest. This is definitely a lot quicker and more convenient than calling the theater and listening to a 5 minute lineup – especially if the movie you want to see is at the end of the lineup.

UPC Codes

This is definitely one of the more unique Google Search shortcuts that I’ve seen. You can find information about any item by simply typing in the UPC Code of the item into the Google search box. If you don’t know, the UPC Code for an item appears at the bottom of the item’s bar code.

Below I’ve entered the UPC Code of a random item I found in my house. If the UPC Code you enter is valid, you’ll see an image of a bar code along with a link to view more information about the item.

Phone Book & Residential Listings

If you need to look up a US residence phone number or address you can do that as well. Simply enter the person’s name along with a city, state, or zip code in the Google search box. If that person is listed in the phone book, you’ll see an image of a telephone along with their name, phone number and address. Google lists up to three matching results for you to see; to see more, simply click on the “Phone book results for” link. Google also gives you the option to see a residential map for that person.

So, as you can see, Google really makes a lot of useful functions easier and more convenient. Do you know of any other cool Google Search shortcuts? If so, feel free to share by posting them in the comments.

There are quite a few Adobe AIR applications on the Web right now that allow you to monitor your FriendFeed. The most commons ones that you may know about are Alert Thingy, Twhirl, Posty, and bTT by Sobees but now we have Feedalizr to add to the list.

Among all of the FriendFeed applications I have tested out, Feedalizr is definitely one of the coolest and most unique. It allows you to post updates to Twitter, FriendFeed, and Jaiku and you can even share pictures and videos. You can also use your webcam to snap a picture or record a video right through the Feedalizr application, which you can then share as well by clicking on “start camera”.

The one thing I don’t like though is that you can only post updates to one service at a time, as opposed to posting to all of them at the same time like Posty. I’m hoping that’s something that will be integrated in the near future.

Of course you can also reply to messages, leave a comment, watch videos and “like” posts just like on the actual FriendFeed website. Feedalizr will auto-update whenever there is a new post but you can also manually refresh it as well.

Unfortunately, you can’t set a certain time for it to check for updates though. Personally, I’d much rather prefer being able to set a certain amount of minutes to check for updates because the constant auto-updating can be too much at times.

Feedalizr does support popup notifications, which are called “toasters”. These notifications can be disabled if you’d rather not receive them. As you can see in the left screenshot, if there is more then one new post then they will all be shown on the screen together, instead of each being shown separately.

Right now Feedalizr only brings FriendFeed to your desktop, but I have a feeling that they will be adding more in the future. Feedalizr supports FriendFeed rooms as well so you will receive messages that have been sent to a room directly in Feedalizr and you can post directly to any room that you’re a member of.

One of the most unique things about Feedalizr is the tab support. For instance, if you only want to see your Twitter messages in a tab or, if you want to see all messages from a certain user in a tab, you can. Plus, you can have as many tabs open as you want. If you’re wondering if each tab will auto-update with new posts related to that tab, the answer is yes.

The filter system on Feedalizr is pretty extensive as well. As you can see in the next screenshot, you can filter by all of your FriendFeed services and you can even filter by users you’re subscribed to. This is a feature that FriendFeed doesn’t even include without the use of a Greasemonkey script.

So even though Feedalizr is not a Twitter app, you can still use it as such by monitoring your tweets in a separate tab. As far as Twitter is concerned, Feedalizr allows you to reply to a tweet by simply clicking the “reply” link below the post. You can also send a direct message to any user by clicking the “direct” link below one of their posts. Whether you send a reply or direct message, you can rest assure that it will be posted directly to Twitter. If you want to leave a reply on FriendFeed, there’s a separate reply box for that as well.

With all of the features that Feedalizr provides so far, I definitely see it as a better alternative to Twhirl. Besides, who wants to have two separate windows open (for Twitter and FriendFeed) rather than just one window with two tabs? Feedalizr is definitely the better choice if you’re looking to optimize your desktop space.

What do you guys think? Is Feedalizr giving Twhirl a run for their money? Would you consider switching from Twhirl (or any other app you may use) to Feedalizr? Please let us know in the comments.

Monitter is an easy-to-use application that allows you to monitor Twitter for any three keywords and see what people are saying about them. Monitter can be useful for many things such as finding Twitter users with similar interests as you or monitoring what people are saying about you and/or your website. Personally, I like using Monitter to see what other people are saying about some of my favorite sites and applications such as Digsby, Zenbe, and Feedly.

When you first go to the Monitter site you’ll see three columns that are constantly being updated in real-time with new occurrences of specified keywords. To get started you just simply type three words into the keyword text boxes. Withing seconds of entering your keywords, you’ll start seeing relevant tweets streaming live. If you don’t feel like keeping a tab open within the site, you can subscribe to the RSS feed for the keyword(s) that you’re monitoring.

As tweets continue to stream in real-time, you have the option to reply to a tweet or go to the tweeter’s profile. The only downside to the reply feature though is that when clicked, it takes you to the Twitter homepage where you can then reply. In future updates, it would be nice to see a reply box integrated right on the Monitter website.

A great feature that Monitter has implemented is the ability to change back and forth from a light to a dark theme. When you visit the site the default theme is dark which a lot of users don’t like, so it’s nice that they have this option.

As you can see above next to the light/dark link, there’s also the option to hide the informational panel that appears above the columns. As you can see below, the header takes up quite a bit of space so it’s nice to be able to open and close it whenever you need to.

Lastly there’s the Monitter widget that you can embed on any site that allows javascript. In order to use it, you will need to download the necessary files and insert Monitter widget tags (as many as you’d like) on your site. The instructions consist of four short steps and are very simple. Below you’ll see a demo widget.

So now you have yet another way to spy and monitor the Twitter world to see what they’re saying about you, your blog and your keywords.

What do you think? Do you think Monitter is something that you might use on a regular basis?

Up until recently, I was using numerous Greasemonkey scripts to add separate tabs in FriendFeed so that I could access sites like Ping.fm, Kwippy & Google Reader directly from my account. The disadvantage to using separate tags though was that there were only certain ones available for me to use. For example, there are tabs for Plurk, Google Calendar, Remember the Milk, and Identi.ca, just to name a few.

Now, with the help of Better FriendFeed, there’s no longer a limit to the kind of tabs you can add to FriendFeed. In addition to being able to add any tab that you want, Better FriendFeed also helps to make FriendFeed “cleaner”.

So, what is meant by making FriendFeed “cleaner”? Well, as you can see from the “Before Better FriendFeed” screenshot above, the large FriendFeed graphic takes up a lot of space, forcing your tabs to all be pushed over a great deal to the right. This only leaves you so much room to add custom tabs on the right side. Also, there are no separators between posted items, which can sometimes make it a pain to keep up with the long page of content.

Now, in the “After Better FriendFeed” screenshot, the large FriendFeed graphic is replaced by the FriendFeed favicon (which as you can see is tiny). Your default tabs are now pulled closer to the left, leaving you a lot of room on the right to add more custom tabs. There are also separators between posted items, which helps make FriendFeed easier to read. Lastly the tabs no longer have rounded edges, they are now squared.

So as you can see, using Better FriendFeed gives you a lot of added space which enables you to be able to have even more tabs.

The “Cleaner FF” feature is off by default but can be enabled in the Better FriendFeed options.

Now that you have more room for tabs, it’s very easy to add a tab for any site you want to be able to access in FriendFeed.

When adding tabs you’ll need three things, one of which is optional. You will need to enter a name for the tab, a url for the website that you’d like to access, and a url for a favicon (which is optional). It’s best to enter a url for a favicon though, since that is what will show on the actual tab.

Initially Google Reader, Gmail, and Identi.ca are already included with this script and are on by default but you can take them off if you’d like.

So as you can see from the screenshot above, I have 4 tabs that I’m using which are Google Reader, Socialthing, Facebook, and Kwippy; all of my social hangouts in one spot. You can also see the 3 text boxes that allow you to add more tabs.

If you’re wondering how to access the Better FriendFeed options, you simply right click the Greasemonkey icon in your status bar, scroll up to “User Script Commands” and then scroll over to “Better FriendFeed”. From there, a box like above will open up. So as you can see, Better FriendFeed is very easy to use and customize.

With the ability to add any tabs that you want and a good amount of them, why not turn FriendFeed into your one stop social headquarters? This can save you a lot of time since you will only need to go to one site to access your social hangouts.

Also, if you’re like me, you probably keep a lot of tabs open in your browser which can slow down your browsing quite a bit. So now you can also speed up your browsing by using Better FriendFeed. Lastly, there’s no need to add all those different Greasemonkey scripts for each tab – just use this one script to add all the tabs you want and uninstall all the rest.

Have you turned FriendFeed into your social headquarters yet? If not, do you plan to? What do you think of the Better FriendFeed Greasemonkey script? Do you have any other Greasemonkey scripts that you would prefer over this? Please let us know in the comments.

Social search engines are a great way to search across many social networking sites at the same time. They make it easy to find new friends, old friends, people to network with, and people with the same interests as you. Below are three social search engines that you may find helpful in expanding your network or friend circle.

Whoisi

Whoisi is an easy to use search engine, currently in public beta, that allows you to find out what your friends are doing. The Whoisi search engine is unique because it’s public and can be edited by anyone, just like a wiki. Best of all, there is no sign up required and your friends do not have to participate on the site in order for you to keep track of them.

Whoisi allows you to search with any name you want such as a real name, screen name, or even a nickname. As you can see in the screenshot below, Whoisi was able to find me and quite a few sites that I am active on. If there happens to be a site that a person is on but does not enable RSS feeds (like MySpace), then Whoisi will not be able to find it.

You are given the option to add another person to Whoisi with the same name as the person you just searched for. For any person that is found on Whoisi, you can follow them, add another site (URL or RSS) that they are a member of, and even edit their current information.

You might be wondering how you can follow people if there is no sign up required. Well, it’s all done with a simple cookie that Whoisi sets for you and if you want to save that login so you can connect later or log in from another machine? Check out the “Login Later” link on the right hand side and bookmark the magic URL.

So what if you search for a person and no one comes up at all? If you know the person, you’re able to enter a name and URL (with an available RSS) for them and you’re done. That site will now show for the person when they are searched for.

YoName

yoName is a cool identity search tool that allows you to search for people across social networks, blogs, and more. With yoName you can search by email, username, first and last name or phone number. Their advanced search options even allows you to pick which sites you’d like to search through; currently you can search 27 different sites.

Sometimes searching for the same name on yoName may be inconsistent because their searches are in real time. So, “if a social network site does not respond to their search request within the allotted time period yoName will not display any results.” Also, you don’t have to worry about someone finding out that you were searching for them (by name) on yoName because all searches are anonymous.

Searching by email is a little different though. “If this is the first time that the e-mail address has ever been searched on yoName, then an email will be sent to the person inviting them to try yoName. Your information is NOT sent to the owner of that email address.”

yoName can even help you find lost friends. All you have to do is enter information such as first and last name, nicknames, and info about the last time you saw the person. yoName will create a web page with the information that you enter about them so that sites like Google and Yahoo will be able to search the page. If your lost friend happens to search for their name in a search engine, they’ll be able to see that you’re looking for them.

Ex.plode.us

Ex.plode.us, which can also be used as a social aggregator, is a “great way to find friends and those with common interests, no matter what social network or service they use. You can use the Ex.plode.us widget to stay linked to friends regardless of which network they are on.”

Ex.plode.us allows you to search by name or interests. Their advanced search also allows you to select which sites to search, just like yoName; currently you can search 15 different sites. Ex.plode.us also offers other features like collections, nudges, profile/mini aggregator and widgets.

In my personal experience, Ex.plode.us is not very accurate or helpful when it comes to the people search. When I searched for my name & aliases, nothing came up for me at all. Apparently, “their crawlers are constantly updating their search index so, if you are not in their index yet you can make sure you’re in the queue by using a short form provided on the site.”

When searching for interests I had much better luck. I searched for “social media” as an interest and as expected, there were pages and pages of results. So, it seems that Ex.plode.us is more useful for finding people with the same interests as you.

So what do you think of these three search engines? Do you use any of them or is there another you prefer better? Please let us know in the comments.

With all the social media sites available to us now, it’s very easy to go into social media overload. There’s no possible way that one can keep up with even 10 sites, let alone the hundreds that are created each month.

In order to keep up with the social media phenomenon, there are numerous aggregation sites & applications popping up on a regular basis. It seems like most people are now using FriendFeed to stay updated with things but what about the other social aggregators out there that are less publicized? Do you use any of them?

I’ve joined my fair share of social aggregators but these are the 5 that stand out to me as far as being the most useful & beneficial. If there’s a different one that you prefer, please feel free to tell us about it in the comments.

Socialthing!

Socialthing is the social aggregator with the least features & only supports 13 sites (so far) but it seems to be growing more in popularity. It’s very personal in that you can only see your own lifestream & it doesn’t support friends, followers or subscribers; you can only see your friends from other sites (in your lifestream). From your lifestream you can reply (to microblog posts) & favorite items & it is sorted by person & site, in chronological order.

Whenever there are new updates for you to view, a message will show at the top letting you know that new updates are available. You can then choose to see them when you’re ready.

You can also use Socialthing! to post status updates to Facebook, Pownce & Twitter (for now).

Profilactic

Profilactic “is a social media aggregator/lifestreaming service that pulls together just about everything you and your friends create online” & supports a whopping 186 sites! One of the best things about Profilactic is that if there is a site that they don’t support, you can just add it in yourself.

On June 1, 2008 Profilactic created a partnership with Ping.fm, giving members the ability to post updates to 21 different sites at one time.

With Profilactic, not only do you get a lifestream but you also get a profile, you can add clippings, you can add friends & you can view your friends’ lifestreams.

Strands

Strands has quite a few unique features that makes it stand out from the rest of the social aggregators. It allows you to filter content by group (everyone, people who follow me, just me, mutual contacts), category (blogs & notes, images, music, bookmarks & more), date (today, last 7 days, last 30 days) & rating (liked, disliked, saved). These filters can be applied for the entire Strands community or for any individual member.

Two other unique features that can be seen for the entire community or just an individual member are the trendwatch & hot posts. Trendwatch shows the top sources & top categories for a person’s content & hot posts shows which user posts have the most activity (comments & ratings).

What really makes Strands stand out is their tracker, “a desktop application that tracks your listening behavior in your favorite media players and pops desktop notifications about your contacts’ activity even when you are not on Strands.”

Swurl

Swurl is a social aggregator that’s set up in a blog type format. Your home page shows all of your content in chronological order & without any type of site filtering. Your friends page lists all of your friends according to site (Digg, Twitter, Flickr, etc) along with your friends’ feed. The particular format of the home page & friends’ feed actually resembles FriendFeed & includes many of the same features.

Swurl also aims to stand out from the rest by providing you with a timeline of your content. The timeline is set up much like a calender, differentiating your content according to the type it is (status, link, blog, music & image). As you can see in the screenshot to the left, the timeline shows an actual album cover (if recognized) of the song you listened to & it also shows any image that you’ve uploaded.

Iminta

Iminta answers the question, “what are you inta?” & currently supports 34 sites. Iminta has a lot of the same features of the other social aggregators I’ve listed. Their best feature though, is the ability to filter content by as many sites as you want. You can filter content for just 1 site, 3 sites, 10 sites, it doesn’t matter & you can choose which sites you want the content filtered by. You can also filter the content by type (images, microblogs, songs, etc) & you can filter out your favorites only.

Iminta gives you 3 tabs to work with – recent comments, what your friends are inta & what you’re inta. You can manually add an inta as well. Plus, Iminta makes it easy to share your friends’ content by letting you email it or blog it.
