This is a much overdue review, I’ll admit, but instead of publishing a breezy overview of the iPad mini, I wanted to experience and integrate it in my daily life in order to truly tell you if Apple’s latest creation — this overpriced 7.9″ tablet — is really worth spending so much money on.
Before we begin, here’s a disclaimer: I love all Apple products from iPhones to iMacs. But when the iPad mini was announced, I wasn’t so sure. Anyway, we purchased a Slate 16GB iPad mini (WiFi-only model) for $329 to find out if Apple poured as much heart and soul into it; as they have for their previous products. After the review, we’re giving this 16GB iPad mini away to one MakeUseOf reader!
Introducing the iPad mini
I own several Apple products that I use on a daily basis: several iPads, an iPhone, a MacBook and an iMac. What pushed me to purchase an iPad mini over a cheaper Android tablet of the same class was the fact that it runs iOS and therefore, would technically integrate seamlessly with the rest of my gear. And to be clear, I had my doubts about the iPad mini. I feared that it would under-perform and infuriatingly disappoint. And after using it for about 4 weeks, I’m happy to announce that even though it isn’t fitted with a Retina Display, the iPad mini managed to edge out an iPad 3 from my daily workflow. Surprised?

One thing’s for sure, it feels damn good to use…
If you own any Apple product running iOS, you will most definitely feel familiar with the iPad mini. It’s a 7.9″ tablet that sits comfortably in Apple’s product lineup between the iPhone 5 (and iPod touch) and the iPad. In fact, Apple sometimes refers to it as the iPad, dropping the mini because they feel that it’s every inch an iPad. Some critics (and users) feel that it’s merely a blown up iPod touch. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t; but one thing’s for sure, it feels damn good to use — better than an iPod touch anyway.
In terms of pricing, the iPad mini is dearer than any of its current competition. The base 16GB WiFi-only iPad mini costs $329, while the 16GB Google Nexus 7 is only going for $199. However, if you’re contemplating a 7″ tablet, it’s vital to first determine your budget and select the device which runs the operating system you’re more familiar with. For example, if you’ve used an iPhone for several years and have spent a decent amount of money on purchasing applications, paying for the iPad mini makes more sense because you will be able to use those apps on your new iPad mini at no further cost. In fact, the price of a Nexus 7 and re-purchasing those apps for the Android operating system may cost you even more money, or at the very least even out the cost so you may not be saving as much as you’d think. On the other hand, if you’re already an Android OS user, the iPad mini is undeniably overpriced — in that case, you’d be better off with a Nexus 7.
Initial impressions
The iPad mini is shipped in exactly the same way as the iPad, except everything is smaller and lighter. In fact, I was stunned at how light the box containing the iPad mini was.

After some delicate unwrapping, I was presented with the iPad mini, surrounded in a sheet of plastic, protecting it while in transit. I get a whiff of a brand new Apple device and am instantly brought back to the day I unboxed my MacBook in 2008. Other than the device itself, Apple included some documentation, Apple stickers, a Lighting cable, and a 5W power adapter. I thought that was rather odd because iPads are traditionally packaged with 10W power adapters.
Design
The iPad mini sports a 7.9″ LED-backlit multitouch IPS display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 at 163 PPI with an aspect ratio of 4:3. Let me help you digest that information: by having a 4:3 aspect ratio, existing applications for the iPad will run on the iPad mini without any intervention from the developers (unlike the iPhone 5, which forced the developers to redesign their apps to fit the new screen). At 163 pixels-per-inch, the screen is packed with more pixels per square inch than the iPad 2. Even though it’s a far cry from a Retina Display with 264 PPI (on an iPad, 326 PPI on the iPhone 5), I’ll admit that I’m quite pleased with the screen but I’d prefer a Retina Display any day.

I’d prefer a Retina Display any day.
At just under 13.5 cm in width, the iPad mini is barely small enough to hold in one hand. When I say “barely”, I mean that it easily lays flat on my hand but grasping it can be uncomfortable, even though it’s insanely light. So I find myself holding it pretty much how I would hold an iPad.

Apple’s decision to release the iPad mini in 2 colours bodes well with me. The Slate looks absolutely gorgeous. However, the anodised back panel is quite prone to scratches, so enjoy it while you can because it’s ultimately going in a case.

Reviewing the iPad mini
In this review, I won’t be going through the device with you, pointing out the position of the sleep/wake button or how small the home button is. Instead I’ll try to explain how the iPad mini performs in an everyday setting and how it compares to an iPad. Hopefully, my review will help you ascertain if the iPad mini is for you — a question many people are asking themselves.

There’s no doubt that the iPad mini is a beautiful thing. The large-ish 7.9″ display with a narrow bezel looks great. The rear anodised panel is lovely to touch. The whole ensemble is amazingly light. But is it really worth your money? $329 to be exact. Here’s what you’re getting:
Specifications
- dual-core Apple A5 chip
- 512MB of RAM
- 16GB flash memory
- 802.11a/b/g/n wireless
- 1.2MP front-facing camera
- 5MP rear camera
Totally unimpressive, if I’m honest. The iPad mini wasn’t built to be revolutionary. With similar specifications as the iPad 2, a device released in 2011, it’s safe to say that the iPad mini is relatively backwards.

So if the iPad mini is fitted with hardware from 2011, how does it perform? Well, that really depends on what you use it for, and I’ve found that the iPad mini is pretty disappointing as a mobile browser. 512MB of RAM isn’t sufficient to handle multiple browser tabs, which means that my browsing sessions are limited to running a couple of tabs at any given moment. Once the memory limit is reached, background tabs have to be reloaded once they’re brought into view. It’s an annoyance, for sure.

Even though the iPad mini isn’t made from the latest and greatest hardware, I still find myself reaching for it instead of my iPad.
On the bright side, the iPad mini is quite lightweight, which makes it extremely portable. While my iPad has a relatively fixed spot in my house i.e. my coffee table, I find myself bringing the iPad mini with me wherever I go — to bed, to my study, to the kitchen. Ever since I took it out of the box, I’m hardly separated from it. So even though the iPad mini isn’t made from the latest and greatest hardware, I still find myself reaching for it instead of my iPad.

The iPad mini has outstanding battery life, which makes it the ideal travel companion.
In a recent study by British consumer group Which?, it was revealed that the iPad mini’s battery life was the best performing among competing 7″ tablets and managed to squeeze out 13 hours of web browsing, blowing other devices such as the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7 out of the water. And I completely concur. The iPad mini has outstanding battery life, which makes it the ideal travel companion.

Lately, I’m highly enjoying the experience of reading ebooks on the iPad mini. The combination of a 7.9″ screen and awesome battery life in a featherweight device is really quite enticing.
Annoyances
Yes, unfortunately, the list of annoyances continues. In addition to the lack of memory, I’ve found that the bezels on the sizes are extremely thin. So thin, in fact that there’s almost not enough room to grip the device securely with one hand without touching the screen.

And even though Apple has supposedly released a firmware update to address the issue, I still find myself unintentionally flipping through pages in iBooks as I search for a spot to rest my thumb.
Should you buy the iPad mini?
To be honest, this isn’t an easy question to answer. The iPad mini isn’t exactly cheap, so it’s not as easy as forking out the money just to give it a go. However, if you’re already heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, the iPad mini integrates itself very well, and you’ll find that an intermediary device between your iPhone and iPad is a welcome addition.
Personally, I felt very let down by its hardware. For the price I paid, the iPad mini should outperform other 7″ tablets in the market. But it doesn’t (well, except for battery life). And it doesn’t have a Retina Display, which is a deal-breaker for some people.

So I guess, the iPad mini is a bit of a controversial device. It’s made by Apple using hardware from 2011, and it feels to me that they rushed it and didn’t quite make it to be the best that it can be.
MakeUseOf recommends: don’t buy it.

Today is my birthday, so… Count me in!!
The mini, I find, is a fantastic device. The portability/weight trumps the larger iPad 3, though the specs bump of the 4 would make me think.
I disagree with you regarding the bezel’s thinness. By wedging the corner in the meat of my palm and supporting with my fingers on the back, I can very comfortable hold it AND scroll – albeit only on the bottom left corner of the screen. This is find for most cases, including Reddit threads in Alien Blue. Holding it this way my thumb never rests on the display itself.
I do, however, agree regarding RAM. I ‘upgraded’ from my iPad 2, which is now being used by my mom. On the same day my dad got an iPad 3, so I have that for comparison. IF I had been accustomed to the iPad 3, I would definitely miss the 1Gb of RAM in that and the iPad 4. However, having come from the iPad 2 and still using the iPhone 4s, I am used to the 512 Mb limit. Having said that, I’m not exactly a tab junkie, nor even a browser junkie. Most of my browsing is in-app – either flipboard, Reeder, Pocket or Alien Blue. I rarely use Safari!
TL;DR : Buy if you’re new to iPads or are using an iPad 2 or 1. If you’re on iPad 3 or 4, wait til the Mini 2.
Oops sorry, was meant for top level. Err, Happy birthday Leo!
Hey Laga,
Always appreciate your comments. Well, the bezel is rather subjective: it may be really narrow for some people with larger hands, and acceptable for others. I guess it’s really up to the user to discover the best way to hold the device.
Oh absolutely. Just thought I’d give my counterpoint. :D
Happy Birthday!
Good Luck!
Happy Birthday, Leo!
Well hello there guys! Glad that the MakeUseOf comment system really works fine, as my mail picked up all of your comments one by one. Thanks for the warm greetings. I really appreciated them :)
@Laga, no worries there mate! Thanks!
@Jackson, I have already won some softwares from yah guys, but this one needs not to be missed. Thanks. :)
@Stacy, good luck to you too! Thanks!
Great giveway!
This would make my Christmas merry :) Love to use new products. Sooner of later someone asks me questions and it is so much easier when I have had the actual piece of technology in my hands to play with!
Tick Tock …
How comfortable was the sandpaper?
Just kidding. I was actually thinking about buying one of these just to get some experience with iOS, so I’m a bit disappointed. I’ll wait til Apple actually delivers the hardware they’re charging a premium over the Nexus 7 for.
LOL I know. I look forward to reviewing the new iPad mini as well.
I bought two weeks ago, and I’m happy
Superb giveaway! Please count me in!!!

hi karthik,
please read Giveaway rules…
u will notice that India is not applicable for giveaway’s !!
at-least it says here.
http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/why-can-indians-not-participate-in-giveaways-where-the-prize-is-a-physical-item/
That’s correct. We do not ship to certain countries. However, if you read my answer, I also went on to suggest that we do ship to US addresses, and if you can supply one and handle shipping to your own country, we’d be more than happy to comply.
So, People from almost everywhere are eligible, but in case if they win, they will not receive the giveaway outside of US and they can request to ship it anywhere in US. Right?
Almost correct.
1. Giveaways are open to readers worldwide. Anyone may enter.
2. If a winner residing in a country from our restricted list is chosen, the winner will have to arrange for an address in the US for us to ship to. The winner is responsible for shipping costs and taxes thereafter.
3. We may be able to ship directly to winners from other countries e.g. UK, Australia, Canada.
Glad to see this comment. I almost down to know that my country belongs to the restricted list. Anyways, I can arrange the shipping costs if ever I win.
the second largest populated country gets outed again ….
Prashant,
For a thorough explanation of why some countries are excluded, check Jackson’s response to this question.
Also note that you can buy a US address here, as outlined by Salim in response to the question mentioned above.
thanks!
Yes!!! I want one!!! ;-)
It’s a draw… So good luck on getting one!
A very nice prize. Hope I win.
I’d rather have an iPad Mini than my Kindle Fire.
Have the mini, and I use it more than the full size.
Great article! I will be surely entering this giveaway :D
Btw, I think you got confused while writing the article and wrote iPad 5 instead of iPhone 5 (at this part: “on an iPad, 326 PPI on the iPad 5″)…
Thanks, Matheus!

i want this,peroid(.)
Me want!
How I could use one!
I’m really thinking about getting one of these. Good review. Thanks.
Hi,Chung

This looks like a tool that would be useful in schools.
this is awesome…

Merry Christmas to me !!!!
OOMG… I can’t wait for this device to get onto my hands!!
Looks good to me but I like my old Thrive. It has full size ports that have been very handy when going between home, work, and church. I can easily show passages from my bible app. I don’t think the mini will be as simple to integrate. Better in many ways but just not simple enough.
I am in! Still hoping to win something at least. My entries never yield any win, but this time around I hope to be the lucky one to grab that mini!!
I want to become tech savvy like my daughter. So it would be nice to win.
Thank you! I’d love to win it!
I call myself the Apple Fangranny. I would love an iPad Mini to round out all my Apple stash!
Oh wow…. I really want this! So cute!
BAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Uuuuu mini ipad awesome never had an ipad of anykind thanks for allowing us to enter a giveaway :)
Thank you for the review. I was wondering what someone with sense & Apple knowledge would have to say about the mini.
As always ..with best updates from #makeuseof :D great work ^_^
What a great giveway count me in please & thanks also great review.
I am not an Apple guy but it would be nice to get my toe into the Apple water with this and compare it to my Kindle Fire.
I like the concept behind the mini and I really like the Apple products; maybe one day instead of looking over the shoulders of my friends and neighbors I will be able to afford to own an Apple product.
I like the size, the clarity, and various features – I just love this mini table, really I do. Thank you for allowing me to express my appreciate in this forum – excited but poor.
I would love the mini. thank you
I’m not an apple fan but my 13 year old daughter worships at the alter of “Apple”
I would not buy one, but I will take a freebee!
What I really really really really want is to upgrade my antique iPod Touch 3G. Oh please be mine.
I enjoy all the emails I get from you. Even if I don’t win I know that within a short period of time I will find a new email from you that I will enjoy. Just a big THANK YOU for all the emails.
For someone who uses and iPad (1st gen) everyday, the concept of a smaller, lighter, faster version is always appealing. Especially one with an integrated camera.
I would love to give this a try. Cool!!!!!!
Thanks, great giveaway!!
nice one !!!
Super Cool!! Goodluck to all!!
Unfortunately the price factor eliminates this device as a possible 1:1 tablet for younger children. The small size fits their hands better. I am really puzzled by who this tablet is intended for. Young adults use their phone for everything (they have good eyes) and older folks prefer the larger iPad.
it will be awesome to win a apple Ipad Mini!! :D
I could just add it to my Apple family of funware! How I love a good apple.
How I love a good apple!
A nice gift indeed!
great device!!
My son would love a mini for school work.
Sorry folks… I’ll be the winner… Please, feel free to try again next time.
Would LOVE to win this!
I wonder when my reverse psychology will start working. When I tweet, I always change the message to, “You don’t want to win a … whatever… I DO!” Sure wish it would start working on THIS one!
This would make an Excellent gift for Me!
Pleeezzzzzz!
A very complete review.I’m interested in giving it a try and comparing it to my 7 inch blackberry which has incredible display and quickness.
Thanks again, guys! You’re awesome!
Looks like a cool product!
May I have one please? Thank you.
I went to the apple store with my kids (4 and 8 yrs) to have them use the iPad vs the Mini so that my wife and I could see what they would prefer from Santa. And to our surprise they liked the iPad more than the Mini. We figured with the smaller form factor it would be perfect for them. But they preferred the bigger icons and larger screen and it seemed to use to feel sturdier in there hands than the mini and they where more sure of holding it.
But still count me in on trying to win an Mini.
I entered and i shared on facebook as Carolyn Barnett and tweeted as @CarolynRBarnett and shared go google+
I want to start my Foray into The Big Apple . . . beginning with this often-heard device!
(I already have an iPod shuffle BUT I want to enter into the Big Wigs!)

A good device, although for the love of mankind, I cannot understand why they would release it with 1024.768 res when the iPad 4 goes out with Retina Display. Still, I would love to own it mainly for my music production needs…. nothing like logic on the go.
mini machine, max impressed!
The contest will end a day after my birthday so it would be an awesome gift MOU =]
Best christmas gift ever. IOS tablet small with great features!
My sis needs the IPAD badly. I hope I hope! thx much!

Thanks!
gimme mini!
My daughters birthday is in January, and she is forever asking me for an Ipad… however do to the price, it won’t be happening this year. Unless of course I am able to win it. It would make an awesome gift :)
Would be nice to win anything but this would be a bonus.
I was wanting a Kindle or Kobo as I read alot but I see this would be even more handy for everyday use.
How do i get d free ipad mini?
Very helpful review. I think I’ll hold off for the inevitable upgrade
Good decision.
Love to get this mini ipad. What a wonderful prize to get on my 71st year..My Bday was yesterday. I could definitely use this!
Yea!!!
I would like to try.Thanks.
I’m new to the tablet world, and this seems like an excellent introduction.
Cool, I could use one! ;) Good luck every1!
Wud luv 2 win this beauty which can come handy for development on the go :) Fingers crossed :D
I have always wanted an iPad, iPad 2 or any of them really. A friend of mine has one and I get to play it sometimes and I love it! It would be GREAT to actually win one. :o)
Gimme :)
PLEASE! (I’ve been really good this year)
excellent, well balanced and informative article.
I think, on balance, I’d probably opt for the Nexus (I have an old iPhone, but mostly free apps on it). Apple are truly leaders in their field, but the nexus for me is probably better value – which for me, has to count.
Of course, were I to win the ipad mini …. I’d be ecstatic :-)
Thinking of getting a Nexus? I’d hold off for a while if I were you, and start racking up MakeUseOf points (you’ll need to create an account first).
Our seasoned readers will get the drift. Can anyone understand what I’m going on about?
cheers J – I already have account
only thinking of tablet at moment – price watching and spec watching and option collecting …
I’d never buy in the run up to christmas tho – always better to wait for the inevitable price drop shortly after ;-)
Yes Sir!! We get you :)
nice
This is an awesome tablet. Really, really want one!!!!!!
i would surely like to have one, i have a 20″ apple desktop and love it
Count me in!
Who knows, maybe it’ll be my lucky Christmas?
I love the iPad mini. I had the same questions that you and others had, but I find that it also has more than the iPad 2 with better cameras. Siri, stereo speakers and more. I originally started out looking for a dedicated ereader. The Kindle was eh, the Kindle Fire HD, I did not like at all. The Nexus 7 is not for me, it’s too small and I’m not that wrapped up in the Google ecosystem. The one inch bigger over the 7 inch tablets sealed the deal. I figured I could return it but oh it’s so fine! I surprised even myself by liking it as much as I do.
Resolution and “Retina” display were laughed at by other platforms saying it was a “gimmick.” Many iPad 2 users said you could not see the difference between the Retina display and the iPad 2 display. Other platforms now brag we have HIGH RESOLUTION and that was the same approach they took with LTE and the iPhone. NO LTE APPLE IS BEHIND THE TIMES, and not Apple has LTE on all of it’s devices and Google releases no LTE devices, and they say LTE is not important, 3G rocks! Not to me. I love the LTE on it and the iPhone also.
I like the lightness and form factor. The resolution is fine for me, and I honestly don’t want the Retina display, my iPad 3 is good enough for that, and my phone. If you don’t like holding the tablet with the smaller bezels on the sides, get a cheap cover, I got a nice leather one on Amazon for under $25 and there’s no way that you will have a problem holding or operating it then. I put the cover on the one for the kids. Mine I like just with the iPad cover. Cheers.
Very timely Xmas giveaway.
Thank you
bought one to have and use on my 15-day vacation! THEY SUCK! As they didn’t have any decent and truly compatible messenger services to use! Upon my return, I got ALL of my monies back and wouldn’t waste my time with it !!! It’s like Apple producing a car without any seats or gasoline (compatible software makers).
Great,,
Great review, Thanks Jackson…
Sweet giveaway…Thank You!!!!!!!!!
Good luck everyone!!
Great product and great giveaway! Thanks for this! best Regards.
Wow ! A mini-one. . Count me in !
I really need something nice to happen to me….please, I really need a mini :0)
Its my birthday today as well!!
I believe I will win someday
It would be very useful when traveling on holiday
This would be a really nice gift for sure, good luck all.
very good review and givaway
Today is ALSO my birthday Leo… what a coincidence!
I have involved myself in numerous giveaways from your company. I’ve been a loyal subscriber for more that 3 years. As I write this email, I’m getting the same message that I’ve gotten the last 6 or 7 giveaways that I’ve entered. It is a red box that states “Claiming Please Wait”. I find this to be ponderous and I feel that you are probably not giving anything away but simply supplying this message to make people believe that they have a problem with their computer.. As a disabled US veteran who rebuilds used computers for other disabled vets I find your behavior to be despicable. Regards, John Burkhart (jburkhart@gmail.com)
Claiming, please wait? Have you got any Javascript blockers enabled? Disable them and try again.
And you really shouldn’t display your email address in public.
Yep, same problem I have using IE 64-bit. On other computers with different browsers, the giveaway works. This could be just an IE 64-bit issue.
FYI, page still says “Claiming, Please Wait”. Amazing. I’ll still subscribe to your newsletter as I appreciate the info but I’ll not bother with giveaways any longer. My best wishes to othere subscribers who have entered the contest, I hope you win.
Try using a different browser or entering from another computer. Solved the problem for me!
Would love to trial one with the kids at school.
I would like to try it.
Thanks…Awesome giveaway!!!
Would love to win!!
Surprised by the ‘don’t buy’ assessment; despite the annoyances catalogued, you still admit it’s displaced one of your regular iPads. So, if not to buy, then to *won* would be my next (and preferred!) Option.
I had to think long and hard before coming up with the conclusion, and finally decided that I can’t recommend buying it. Even though I like it, I still found it rather disappointing.
Thanks for this opportunity. If I were to win it for free, the “hardware from 2011″ wouldn’t necessarily matter as long as it works, lol. I like the idea of it’s physical dimensions and wouldn’t mind giving it a whirl. Thanks for the opportunity and good luck to all of us entering.
My daughter would to have this……..My fingers are crossed!!
Only 5 thousand people to compete with? That iPad mini is as good as mine!
I would love this.
My 13 yr old would have a fit if I won this thing. She loves anything Apple. I have her using Android now and the tide is turning but this would definitely light her up like a Christmas tree.
Thanks for the chance.
Twist
Thanks for the advice, very much to the point.
I have been asking myself the same question…do I really want to spend that much money for last years’ tech? Maybe..after your review which gives me a better assessment than I could do myself. Would I happy to win one? YES!
I want to win this! I’ve entered and shared with friends. Good luck to everyone!
..12-21-12 is just around the corner..so please let me touch that iPad Mini..
Dear Santa, I wish to have an Apple iPad Mini for Christmas. Please talk to makeuseof.com to make this happen. Thanks! Oh, I’m not giving you a cookie until you do something about my request.
Love, Me
Sorry, but I think Santa is an Android fan :)
This would make a good Christmas present. Just sayin…
I would Love one!
Nice Christmas gift for me :)
So fantastic, if i could win this. Thank you before
Nice giveaway, thanks for the chance!
Helpful review.
Thanks for the giveaway offer too!!
It’s a lucky date: 12-12-12. Hope it will help me win this pad ;-)
I’m with you. I just don’t see the point of the mini at that price range. You should just wait it out or look for a better alternative.
I think it boils down to how it ‘fits’ to me. My hands are small but my needs are big. Sure would like to try it. Glad you are having a contest.
christmas is near,i love to have it
I want this great iPad…
Today Is My Birthday 12-12-12
I Want In But I Am only 13
Will You Select Me
NIce review wish i could win this…………!!!
Please Select Me As Winner I Am Over 13 Now
I just want to try my luck.
In this review the reviewer was happy of everything just for no reason. If you prefer a good looking product an have basic need then this is for you. other than that nowadays majority of mid range android phones and tablets have much better hardware.
But helpful review. thanks
I’m not happy for no reason…
Thanks for the great giveaway.
done!
count me in then..
Thanks for the giveaway :)
Useful tablet & great giveaway
I’m in!!
Good luck to all!!!
Happy Birthday Leo !!
The battery life sounds impressive.
I like “Make Use of” I have a few set of books on interesting subjects. Will contact after finishing touch.
Would be a great gift for my son!
I’m an Android user but I want to try Apple products personally. I have entered the competition and hope that I win…
gonna win
it looks like it was impossible for me to win
The one and only downside to working for MakeUseOf is the inability to enter these giveaways. I must admit I’m eyeing the iPad Mini up as my first iOS device.
LOL I’d suggest holding out for the next iPad mini, Dave. We wouldn’t want you to be disappointed with your very first iOS device, now would we?
Awesome!!!
Thanks for review and giveaway, I hope win.
I Wish I were have any apple product……………:(
This would be such an excellent way to finish off the year…
Getting one for free for year 2013, would be a fantastic present. Like the product, especially oldies like myself, we only do the simple stuff online. Keeping it simple, cheap and less hassle softwares is good enough for any laymen.
Please!! I want an ipad mini!!
If i were to win it would be my first Apple product. The stuff is just too dang expensive for me.
The best giveaway :D
Hope I WIN :D
I would like to have it.
I looked at the mini but went with the iPad 3 instead. I figured I would wait till next year when the next generation comes out and it has the retina display in it. But It was a difficult decision not to get it now.
Hope I’m one of the selected winners. If I do, I will consider this as my Christmas present and my birthday gift which is on Dec 26 >.<
If I ever get a mini 1 or 2, I think I will use that much more than my ipad 3. Right now, I go around on the bus with my 3 and I’m beginning to hate it. I move around on transit and my ipad.is too heavy to hold it in my hand for long. I don’t think retina display is that important as most people will not be reading books on it. I’m waiting for mini with retina display when people get rid of their mini first gen for cheap. Of course, if I win it here, it will be nice too.
for my birthday today!
WHAT A FANTASTIC COMPETITION THANK YOU FOR THE CHANCE AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL
I’m really curious if it can work as a graphic tablet as well , there’s no particular reason for me to want this but it seems rather useful if it comes for free . :D
I was prepared to get one but I will either wait for its newer version or get Nexus 7 instead.
Thanks for the review Jackson, I’m glad I found the MUO site you guys do some great articles, the site has lots too offer and gives me a place to find stuff I never would have thought to look for, I’ve already downloaded a few helpful guides and I’ll definately be checking out some of the cheat sheets, and I’ve found a wealth of useful apps and web sites. Again, thanks MUO. oh and thanks for all the great give aways, you guys Rock.
Thanks, Ron!
Oh yeah and Happy Birthday Leo.
Nice. Wouldn’t mind a tablet of my own
Please please please chooose meeee!
The iPad mini is so awesome, and it fits in your (bigger) pockets! Cheers!
Ipad mini has been surprising me in my daily life in many ways. First it’s portability & battery life offered me the freedoom that i’ve never had with any other device. Light, fairly fast to be honest and the most important, it fits DAMN good :-)
Great review and giveaway!!! Thanks!
Dawn
Please, please, please let me win this one :) Perfect for using as a digital portfolio and viewing my photography.
Great!!
honestly i still want the ipad mini :P cant afford it though, which is why i entered the giveaway… contests end on my birthday too!!!
Hope to win…
Hope to win this too…
Great review! I hope I can try one out soon too.
I need this….
Great device, small size!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!!!
A truly helpful and informative newsletter and website. Keep up the great work!
Not fair for exempted countries
If you are from a “restricted country” and you’re chosen as the winner, provide us with a US shipping address and you’ll get your prize. You will be responsible for all shipping costs and taxes.
Great to know MakeUseOf does this. I remember reading about the Lacie Key incident. MakeUseOf sent a replacement key to one lucky winner in INDIA. Not many websites have giveaways open to residents of non-US countries. Of course, international users lower my chance of winning but it’s fair.
thanks
The review is good and a detailed one. It is just exactly what I wanted to read. And as far as in India we don’t have holidays but yeah Christmas is a big thing here as well. So really excited and hoping that I win and would give me another reason to celebrate Christmas the entire next year.
Wish I could win!
Very nice prize, thanks.
i wanna win… please let me win…
I want this awesome :)
Plan to buy 3 pcs as Christmas gift… Hohoho!
Looks good enough to me. Reviewes are prety good.
Well today is not my birthday but Sunday was! The Ipad is a great tool, the only disadvantage is being locked into the Apple ecosystem. But that is offset by the quality of the product. Would love to score a mini..
Well it would be delightful and trusty that these are meant to be real, but an end to scams.
Would be nice to travel with!
My little girl always takes my or my wife i pad to play. As soon as i win this one we will download her games and santa will be a hero this cristmas
This ipad must be great to read books with. I’ve never won any giveaway in my life so I hope I will this time ^^”
I would love to win this brilliant piece of equipment
Would love to be able to compare!
Solid Review for a solid product. I am buying a mini for she who rules so she can use it when it is too hard to hold an IPAD.
Commented, shared & liked.
Another Great giveaway from MUO ….Well done team
Wish I could afford one :-(
I’ve been using Google products on my Windows PC and Linux PC’s since they integrate together so easily with my android phone and my Chromebook (obviously). All of my friends look at my Android, Chromebook and PC’s as neolithic and insist that I “upgrade” myself into the Appleverse. Would this be a good place to start dabbling with iOS or is there a better, cheaper way to get my toes wet?
Whoah! only 512mb of RAM?? I’ve bought a samsung galaxy 7″ with 1gb and a good enough CPU for just 155€ the other day!
Apple always had it’s overpriced products, but there was a reason they were so overpriced: they were unique. Top (not the best, but always on the top) on specs of every product and the perfect look and feel on everything. I think iPad mini is not a product wich respects that tradition, at all, mainly on the specs for god sake!
Anyhow, many thank for the giveaway and review!
Great info and I love it. Tx to Make Use of Team!
iPad, iPad, iPad <3 MUO please choose me :D
really, I can’t believe that I’m being asked if I speak English. Not much of a believer to win anything…. since I’ve never met anyone who has won anything…
I want it
Been trying for last few days to use points to enter, just says “claiming, please wait”

ME, ME, ME !!
It’s Christmas!
What are you referring to? This giveaway ends on the 28th.
Woot! I’m in need of a travel companion :)
Great giveaway! This will make a lovely Christmas gift for “moi”. I love, love, love, Apple products. Happy Christmas. Blessings to all… peace and goodwill toward men.
Are there any geographical restrictions to the giveaway?
i would love one as my computer is old and unreliable :-D
I like it!
Would like to have one
WOULD BE AMAZING gift ifor me if i win THIS MINI …..
Im still stuck with 1st gen iPad. Please make my christmas wish come true
The best productive document to come out for a long time. It’s just too bad that we have to have something to explain something that should have been easy to explain from the beginning. Keep up the good work!
Hix, my previous post’s gone. I hope I will get the iPad for this Christmas :D
Good review.
Glad you point up the shortcomings of the device.
Still a nice thing to have though… ;)
I’d love to have one of those!
Great Giveaway :)
Wow, really appreciate the deprecative comments about the iPad Mini Jackson Chung! I think you have mastered the art of writing Apple product reviews. Your review had me rooting for the Apple Mini as you pointed out it’s shortcomings and how it makes up for those. :-)
I always dreamed to have a thing from Apple. But unfortunately I do not have any thing from Apple. although I’d love to, but unfortunately Apple are on my pocket very large. That is why I participate in this contest with the hope that as I get lucky, I’ll have at least one Apple product. When it comes to birthdays, my birthday is rapidly approaching (on 25.01). If I was able to win in this competition I was very happy with such a wonderful gift. Thanks urz?dzeniowi, I could do many things including RSS readers read, read news from your wonderful website and many other things I could do thanks to this device. So please do Count Me. I’m committed to this win.
Sincerely Jarek.

In response to the question add retina display or make it cheaper. I say lower the cost of the mini and leave it as it is. If they add retina now they will just raise the price even more and call it ipad mini 2 with retina display.
I would love to have this and this would be then my first Apple Device…:-)
I’ve joined. Thanks MakeUseOf.
thanks for helping me know whatnot to give this Christmas – very useful!!
let’s hope I win this:)
please enter me to win thanks
Personally, I love the mini. I’ve played with one a few times on visits to the Apple store and I like it better than it’s bigger brother. The lack of retina display isn’t a large factor. The screen looks amazing as is. It’s the perfect size for both browsing and for carrying around. Bottom line, it’s a great device, the price tag is a little high but hey, you get what you pay for. I hope I win one! :)
Happy Birthday, Leo! sorry its late
cool contest
New Apple Mini iPad, I want this… like who wouldn’t? /o/
Thanks for a good honest review. I am not an Apple fan anyway and even Android is new to me (just bought a mobile and a tablet recently). I am basically used to Windows. Thus it would make sense for me to buy a Windows tablet (that means I wait for a few 7″ – 8″ size tablets to come with Windows OS).
How I wish I could have this one this christmas. :D
Thank you for the opportunity to win such a nice and useful device!!
I just lost my Nokia E63 to washing machine. Waterlogged, dried it out, but couldn’t resurrect it.
I would be happy to win a tablet atleast..
To be honest I wished you were giving away an Android (not that I hate Apple or its products..)
Anyways. May the deserving person win. But, MTFBW me xD ;)
Thank you, i hope its gonna be a Christmas present for me :D
I would keep this for myself..Merry Christmas to me if I were to win :)
fantastic!
would love to win this ipad mini my daughter would love this but yeah fingers crossed to all of us on winning this ipad mini Thanks Make Use Of to all of your give aways and all the good stuff and things on your site io would be lost without your site thanks yh merry xmas and happy newyear 2013

Why not
it may not appeal to some people but it’ll surely make the best Christmas yet…hope i’ll win this..com’on!
Waw okay . Although i dont know what to say about this product . But i cant stop looking at it . Its really waw and it looks great . I really like what you guys bring . Some of them cant be found in my country . They get every thing late lol . So know new things from here
How nice it would be to have the sweet love of a tablet instead of hauling around a laptop everywhere.
I would change the price :/
I want one!
Pick me!!! I never win anything!
12/20/12
Today is my birthday, this would be the perfect birthday present. Thanks in advance.
this is my ticket to giving apple a chance im a droid lover all the way. XD
I love your site I read it everyday and learn new things. Hip Hip Hurray to Make Use Of!!!!!!!
I want iPad mini, Never had an ipad before.
One thing is I would like the form factor of the iPAD Mini to be a bit narrower like the Nexus 7 so that it is easier to snug in into a pocket and easier to hold across by one hand. It is easier to do that in a Nexus 7.
I’ve had a chance of using an iPad mini lately, I have to say that I already missed my Android tablet. Its usage seemed more complicated to me than Android’s. However it looks good, visually well designed and light. Battery is also a plus.
Want to win!
been a big fan of ur reviews for a long time ! the thing i like about ur reviews are that they they are so unbiased !

Ipad mini is now trending bhaaiiii , so pls count me also bhaii…………
I waited to the last minute. Just entered.
mini
This would be wonderful honestly. I bought the Ipad 1 when it first came out and I’m sure as everyone knows with their first experience with an Apple device is that it leaves you somewhat stunned. I don’t believe I’ve gone a day since, without using it and I even use it in the shower. (with a large plastic zip-lock bag over it of course) I’m still unsure as to whether I should go for the mini, but I will definitely go for the giveaway! It would definitely be useful and much easier to take to school to use with taking notes and organizing. The cameras I’m honestly not all that interested in so I’m not really looking at them, but I haven’t experienced a retina display yet so if I’m looking to buy, then I’ll wait until the second or perhaps even the third. Thank you for this review, it was very helpful. :)
would love to win this
Apple iPad mini is surely a forbidden apple. Out of the long account shared above, i am amazed how Apple missed on providing enough space ob sides to hold the slate rather had to issue software fixes to tackle that… its so much NOT like apple. On the contrary I have been using Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and would rate it high on almost all the Parameters except that it doesn’t come from a celebrated family like Apple.
Trust me no verdict is final unless you have heard both the lovers and the haters. Catch the super hot Tug-of-war happening between iPad mini and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 at:

thanks for the great information and chance to win -i would love to have a Mini pad too

This is a great alternative to the regular size iPad!
This would be my first tablet-type device so my fingers are tightly crossed. Played with one in the Perth Apple Store and they’re great!!!
Merry Christmas!
If the new machines has correct the battery issues then I am all in for one!
There are so many other people enamoured with the mini iPad, that it seems almost
impossible for me to win it. However, hope springs eternal, and I find I can’t
give up just yet.

Too bad I’m from Philippines. Giveaway Rules stated that if I winner is from India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines it will forfeited and a new winner will be selected. I thought this is for all. So sad. :(
You could always provide us with a US shipping address and we’ll ship it there. You will have to be responsible for shipping to your own country though.
I see. Thanks.
I would love to win the Mini. It would be the perfect size to carry in my purse and I would still be able to check e-books out at the library.
