As part of the recent iPhone 5 media event, Apple demonstrated and reviewed their next operating system update, iOS 6, for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The iOS 6 update will be available for download on September 19, followed by the sale of the new iPhone on September 21st. The 5th generation iPod touch will go on sale in October.
The vice president of iOS software, Scott Forstall, gave a basic overview of the new release which will include changes and enhancements to all the built-apps for iOS devices, including Siri, Maps, Music, FaceTime, Messages, Safari, AirPlay, and Game Center. The iOS 6 update will be free and will run on all iOS devices including and since the iPhone 3GS. Here are a few highlights.

Siri will be able to answer sports related questions, provide movie showtimes and facts, play trailers, make restaurant reservations, and more.
Maps will replace the traditional Google Maps and offer its own turn-by-turn navigation, real-time traffic updates, and interactive 3D views of selected metro areas.
Photo Stream will allow you to share photos using iCloud to the people you select. Your photos will appear on their iOS 6 supported devices. The new update will also include web sharing of iOS-generated photos.
Passbook is a new app in iOS 6. It enables you to keep and use all boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, etc. in one place.
Other features include FaceTime capabilities over cellular networks, reply and remind me later messages for phone calls, and a VIP list for Mail — a feature already available in Lion OS for the Mac.

lot of new features and updates i hope it will gain the expected success in the market
Well, I just hope they keep the prices low.
I’m looking forward to the new release — and I can’t wait for the new mini iPad that’s rumored to come out in October!
Be interesting to see how well iOS6 runs on a 3GS.
Good point Martha. I wonder if it will run a little sluggish.
?
Camera Panorama will support iPhone5 and iPhone4/4S only.
Thanks for pointing this out, Nabil.
watched last night event and it was not that amazing with the new i phone. I mean the concepts were more lovely than the real thing! :P
Yeah, I’m not sure where else they can go with the iPhone.
The Panorama is cool but do people try to do panoramic pictures on their current iPhones?
Probably mostly advanced photographers.
Anyone know why the white iPhone is pictured here with a blue aluminum band instead of the standard? This is also the same on the iCloud and iOS information pages on apples new website.
Hmm, I just noticed that. Wonder if it was a bug in the screen capture. I need to go back and look at that. Thanks for pointing it out.
About time! Too bad iOS6 y just the same as iOS5.
I’m not sure what you mean. There are several new features to the iOS 6.
Siri is just amazing
I agree, but I wonder why the two developers of Siri recently quit?
I can’t wait to try out all the new features. :)
I’m with you on that, Andrew.
Wow. that’s a little late. If Windows 8 takes the market by storm, as I expect they will, simple ‘mobile-app’ tablets like Android and iOS will be mere eReaders with games.
Too little, too late, I think, for Apple.
Hmmm, we’ll have to see.
Thanks.
I can’t wait to upgrade my 3rd gen iPad and my 4th gen iPod! First, I though they would release it on the day of the keynote, bad we still have to wait one more week for the update. I’m getting impatient…
Anthony, just hang in there. It’s well worth the wait.
I think it is actually the 21st
