Your Android phone or tablet has very few buttons. The only way you can turn it on is by pressing the power button — and that isn’t working. Don’t panic! Android devices may sometimes refuse to power on or wake from sleep when you press the power button, but your phone or tablet probably isn’t broken. There are some easy ways to make your device boot again.

Long-Press the Power Button or Remove the Battery

It’s possible for smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices to become seemingly stuck in power-off mode. In such a state, the power button won’t work at all — that’s because the device is basically frozen. Historically, the solution has been to remove the device’s battery, wait a few seconds, then reinsert the battery and press the power button again. This removes all power to the device and is known as a “power cycle.” If your device has a removable battery, try this — it may fix your problem.

Of course, your device probably don’t have a removable battery. Luckily, there’s a way to effectively perform a power cycle anyway. Just hold down the device’s power button for ten seconds. If this doesn’t work, you may want to press the power button  for a bit longer. Ten seconds should be suitable for most devices, but some people have reported needing to hold the power button down for 30 or more seconds.

Your Android device should now boot properly. If not, read on.

Charge Your Device

If your device refuses to boot at all and nothing happens when you press the power button, it may just be out of power. Plug in your device  and allow it to charge for a bit  before trying to turn it on again.

If your device’s battery is completely drained, it may not boot immediately after you plug it in. Leave the device for a little while — perhaps as a few minutes — before attempting to power it on again. After allowing the device to charge for a while, it will hopefully turn on normally.

In some cases, you may have to combine both methods — let the device charge for a bit, then long-press the power button for ten seconds. If your device isn’t powering on, it’s worth a try.

Perform a Factory Reset From Recovery Mode

If your Android device appears to power on and boot up normally, but a problem occurs — maybe the boot process fails, the device freezes, or it immediately reboots or shuts off — there may be a problem with your device’s software. In this case, long-pressing its power button or charging it won’t help. These methods only help you fix a device that won’t respond at all.

There’s a hidden way to perform a factory reset of your Android device when it isn’t booting properly Dealing With System Problems In Android: Safe Mode, Factory Reset & Restoring Backups Dealing With System Problems In Android: Safe Mode, Factory Reset & Restoring Backups Android phones are extremely customizable and they give you the freedom to experiment to your heart’s desire. One inevitable side effect of this freedom, however, is that sometimes your phone encounters a problem or two.... Read More . Note that this will erase the contents of your Android device, resetting it back to its default state. This method should only be used in a worst case scenario when your device is unusable due to crashing or freezing software, as you’ll lose everything that isn’t synced to online services.

First, you’ll need to access your device’s recovery mode. Turn the device off completely, then boot it up with one of the following button combinations:

  • Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power.
  • Hold Volume Up + Home + Power.
  • Hold Home + Power.
  • Hold Volume Up + Camera.

This will vary from device to device. If none of these combinations work, try performing a Google search with the name of your device and “recovery mode” to find the correct key combination for your device.

The device will boot to a screen with an Android and an open chest panel if you’re successful. Press the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons until the Recovery mode option appears on the screen. Press the Power button and your device will reboot into recovery mode.

Maybe It’s Just Broken

No one likes hearing this, but if your device refuses to boot even after you hold the power button, swap out the battery, and charge it fully — or if it’s still malfunctioning after a factory reset — it may be broken.

Some time power button is also broken and even on pressing it. Signals were not send.
Dust, carbon & moisture also cause the tablet to break down.
Corrupt OS can also cause it.
Broken circuit also do the harm. In case of these problem it can be easily fixed at home by seeing the tutorial video on YouTube.

following experiment is not be repeated(unless... )

i had tegra note 7 (nvidia/xolo). i wasn't using the tablet for few days(probably got switched off because of the low charge ). When i put it on charging, there was no charging animation. After an hour in trying switching it on, nothing happened. Then I started searching internet and came across this site.

The battery of tegra note is non removable and soldered directly on to mother board unlike nexus 7(1st gen), so removing battery was out of question. Then i tried pressing the power as recommended, nothing happened. neither did the recovery mode .

So i opened the back panel and checked the battery voltage with multimeter, it showed 3.17V. Connected the usb charger and checked (with charger connected) , it showed the same voltage again. I then connected the tegra note battery with an external power supply(4.9V, 2A.. directly) and boosted the voltage till 3.3V.... connected the usb cable... charging animation is back... and device booted after 5 min ..
    Happy ending :-)

Make use of the one year warranty from the manufacturer if that is still applicable, secondly I would be very careful in using third party to fix my item. Lastly, I never trust service providers warranty as they are useless.

My HTC one, completely froze after a full charge and no multi button hard reset method worked at all. Bizarrely what did bring it back to life was yet another 10 second plus power button hold and then placed the front face camera lens close up to a light bulb, whilst maintaining the button press and lo and behold it booted as normal within a couple of seconds of placing it on front of the bulb

I had this problem with Samsung Galaxy S. It wouldn't boot even after I performed factory reset. I solved the problem by using "Heimdall - Open-Source Cross-Platform Flashing Suite" to reinstall the ROM. After that the device worked just fine.

I agree with Tom E. My Samsung was doing the samething and I opened it up and under the inner power button was one piece of cat hair. Blowing that out did the trick. Until I did this I had to plug it into the charger to get it to turn on which only works if you're near the charger when your phone rings.

My last phone had a power button that pushed, but did nothing. I opened the phone up, and the power button was moved, due to dust and pocket lint. A little cleaning and it worked! Getting the phone open (Samsung Galaxy S 2) was not trivial, but just look for instructions -- someone else HAS to have opened one up and posted instructions online.

Of course if you want to customize your phone or God forbid, add memory to it, an Iphone might not be the best solution.

Sure. Anything Apple sells is inhumanly perfect. Somehow the same technology, same parts, but no crashes, ever.
I have a bridge for sale, excellent location, excellent condition. Best offer.

NO. Android devices leads the market with more than 60% that because of many advantages of android than any other OS including iPhone. I like my 2 in one phablet ASUS FONEPAD it works perfectly.

A iphone is a piece of bloat itself you must have a slate loose if you buy one of those

I had the same experience with my ASUS Memo Smart Tab 10" (during warranty period) and had to send it back to ASUS for repair. After it was returned it has worked OK.

I experienced this with my nexus5 twice in a month. The first time it was sort of scary. Then you type "my nexus5 won't turn on or charge" on google and you find many people with the same issue. The vol button up and down and then power button trick fixed it each time.

A *decent* device is not supposed to do this though. I'm surprised to see on the internet so many people being "Ok" with it. Just because there is an easy fix or doesn't occur everyday doesn't make it "OK" imho.

i guess people dont want to look like they made a bad purchase so they defend their products no matter what.

I experience this issue with an Asus MemoPad HD7, usually when the device goes into sleep mode. The only way to restart the device is to plug into the wall outlet and then press the power button. Some forums called it the 'sleep of death' and apparently it is common.

thank u soo much this helped me as hell . My problem was that i put my phone on charge and i pressed the power button but it didn't work so then i tried the Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power. and it worked but it just turned my phone off again then i used my normal charger for my phone and it didn't work so then i realised that my charger was broken so i went to use my brothers charger and it worked. I used my brothers charger yesterday and it didn't work so today i used my brother's charger and i did this method Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power. and its working and charging perfectly :)
      Thank you so much
