Welcome to 2014! Each week we scour current Google Play promotions and cherry-pick the best of the best. This week we have two excellent tower defense games, an award-winning indie game, and one of the most ambitious (and expensive) app launchers — all on sale!

Because app sales are temporary affairs, by the time you read this, these may no longer be on sale. Worry not: Simply check back next week for some more Android deals!

Games

Fieldrunners HD ($2.99, now $0.99, 66% off)

A very well-known tower defense title, Fieldrunners HD has cartoonish graphics and a wide variety of towers and upgrade options. With a 4.1-star average out of over 4,500 ratings, this is a well-established game. It’s been around for a while, but that’s actually a plus if you’re rocking an older device — it should be quite forgiving when it comes to system requirements.

Fieldrunners 2 ($2.99, now $0.99, 66% off)

If hanker for some tower-defense action but find the original Fieldrunners HD a bit dated, you should check out its sequel. Both games cost exactly the same now, and you could actually get both for less than the regular cost of one. With Fieldrunners 2, you get custom loadouts (pick whichever weapons you want before the level), as well as trenches, bridges, and tunnels.

Eufloria HD ($4.99, now $2.99, 40% off)

We’ve mentioned Eufloria 5 Must-Have Strategy Games For iPad [iOS] 5 Must-Have Strategy Games For iPad [iOS] Touch controls are great for games that require thought rather than quick, twitch movement. You can plot moves, activate abilities and direct units all with the touch of…well, your touch. You’d expect that to mean... Read More as a must-have strategy title for the iPad — and if you’re an Android user, now is a great chance to enjoy this artistic indie gem for a nice price. This is a space colonization game of sorts, where you invade planets and fight other forces. But really, what makes Eufloria shine is the distinctive art — whereas other strategy games often feel quite militaristic (you are fighting a war, after all), Eufloria turns the battle into an organic, stylized dance.

Star Command ($2.99, now $0.99, 66% off)

Star Command was one of the games featured in our Dec 5 sales column Android Apps on Sale for 5 December: Action Launcher, Star Command & SunVox Android Apps on Sale for 5 December: Action Launcher, Star Command & SunVox This week the unique Action Launcher Pro can be had at a great price, as well as a powerful great music creation tool, and a game where you get to fly a space shuttle. Read More and it’s still on sale, so I’ve decided it merits another mention. In fact, this time I broke down and bought it myself — It’s just too tempting. Strategy, space warfare, and pixel graphics — what’s not to like?

Apps

TSF Shell ($16.01, now $7.99, 50% off)

With a list price of $16, TSF Shell is one of the most expensive apps featured in our App Sales columns yet. An extremely ambitious shell, TSF isn’t aimed at lovers of minimalism. Some may find it a bit gaudy (especially if, like me, you like Nova launcher Nova Launcher - Even Better Than The Default Android 4.0 Launcher Nova Launcher - Even Better Than The Default Android 4.0 Launcher Up until Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) came along, Android’s interface felt somewhat less polished than iOS’s. But with Android 4.0, Google made a clean break with the previous visual style for Android, introducing Holo... Read More ), but it is certainly comprehensive. If you have a device with power to spare and enjoy fancy animations, this is a good time to get TSF for a somewhat saner price. I actually went ahead and bought it myself, so you can expect a detailed review of TSF on MakeUseOf sometime in the coming weeks.

Minuum Keyboard ($3.99, now $1.99, 50% off)

I reviewed Minuum Minuum, Reviewed: A Truly Innovative Android Keyboard, Or a Useless Gimmick? Minuum, Reviewed: A Truly Innovative Android Keyboard, Or a Useless Gimmick? There's something about typing on a touchscreen that really brings out developers' creativity. After all, they are no longer bound by the rigid constraints of plastic: Buttons become a recommendation, rather than a must. Suddenly... Read More back in September, and found it interesting. This is a keyboard that’s essentially made up of just one or two lines, taking up a fraction of the vertical space other keyboards take, leaving that much more room for your chat, email, or document. It’s an acquired taste, but if you prefer tapping to sliding, it offers reasonable accuracy and a unique form factor.

Pixel Fleet ($1.99, now $0.99, 50% off)

Last but not least, a live wallpaper! Pixel Fleet makes your phone look like it’s playing a retro pixel shooter game against itself. You can either use it as a live wallpaper, or as a Daydream app for devices running Android 4.2 and above. It supports a bit of interaction, too, letting you double-tap ships to destroy them.

Tune in next week for some more great Android deals! And of course, feel free to share your finds and favorites in the comments below.
