Each week we scour current Google Play promotions and cherry-pick the best of the best. Valentine’s is here, and app and game developers are doing their best to help you celebrate. This week there’s a massive Gameloft sale, including hits like Modern Combat 4 and The Dark Knight Rises, all reduced from $7 down to just one buck!

Because app sales are temporary affairs, by the time you read this, these may no longer be on sale. Worry not: Simply check back next week for some more Android deals!

Games

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour ($6.99, now $0.99)

A new chapter for the massively popular FPS. You’re going to need a late-model device to truly enjoy this one, but if you’re into blowing stuff up and have a beefy enough GPU in your pocket, get it now.

The Dark Knight Rises ($6.99, now $0.99)

Bruce Wayne, is that you? This is another very well-received Gameloft title, an official tie-in for the movie of the same name. You get to be Batman, fight the bad guys, collect hidden items, and save the people of Gotham.

The Adventures of Tintin ($6.99, now $0.99)

Another tie-in, which made a considerably smaller splash than the Batman one. Judging on the latest reviews, you may want to try out the game as soon as you buy it, just to make sure it works on your device. This is one 3D game which is not a first-person shooter, making it more kid-friendly.

The Amazing Spider-Man ($6.99, now $0.99)

Our fourth Gameloft game, and third movie tie-in, but who’s counting? Like the others before it, Spider-Man is a massive game, requiring around 2 gigs of storage space to install. It looks very much like The Dark Knight game, only with a different skin.

Bag It! ($1.99, now $0.99)

No more superheroes blowing stuff up! Bag It is all about the supermarket experience — or actually, the very last bit of it. You know, that moment you get to the checkout, and need to start putting all of the groceries into bags without having anything break. Super-cute graphics, and truly fun gameplay. Wasn’t an expensive game to begin with, but at just a buck, it’s a steal.

Assassin’s Creed Pirates ($4.99, now $2.99)

So we’ve seen one AAA developer put everything on sale (Gameloft), and Ubisoft is trying to loosen up a little, too. Unfortunately, the price drop isn’t quite as dramatic in this case (just a couple of bucks), but if you like the Assassin’s Creed franchise, this could be a fun way to enjoy it on the go.

Rayman Fiesta Run ($2.99, now $1.49)

Another Ubisoft-published title, Rayman is a fast, kinetic platformer with boundless energy and lighthearted graphics. You’ll get to bounce off lemons, too.

Virtua Tennis™ Challenge ($4.99, now $0.99)

Our final big-name publisher for this roundup is none other than Sega. Virtua Tennis is a classic franchise, and its mobile version does it justice with lovely graphics and touch-based controls. This one’s better played on a tablet.

Apps

Plex for Android ($4.99, now $2.49)

An all-in-one personal media center that allows you to stream videos, music, photos and home movies to your phone or tablet from your home computer (as long as your computer runs Plex, which is free).

Podkicker Pro ($2.96, now $0.99)

Are you into podcasts? With a 4.5-star average based on over 1,700 ratings, Podkicker looks like a solid option for listening to your favorite casts. Has a sleep timer, so you can let Technophilia lull you to sleep.

Battery Widget Reborn ($1.99, now $0.99)

It looks like a Holo widget, but actually works on Android 2.3 and up (won’t make your Gingerbread phone pretty, though). Gives you generous battery stats, including how long you can expect your battery to last, what’s its current discharge speed, when was your device last plugged in, and more.

My Date HD ($1.99, now $0.99)

Okay, today’s final entry is a bit on the cheesy side, but hey, it is Valentine’s. This is a 3D live wallpaper that lets you embed a photo of “that special someone” in a romantic scene. Wine not included.

Tune in next week for some more great Android deals! And of course, feel free to share your finds and favorites in the comments below.

Plex is absolutely godly. It's basically THE killer app for anyone with a local collection of audio or video data. I don't think it gets as much attention as it deserves for the capabilities that it has. Totally worth the money.

I'm confused. The headline reads this is for 13 February 2014, and yet the article is posted on 14 February, 2014.

Anyone for a time machine? Or is there an app for that?

Yup! I like to write in my time machine - great for peace and quiet.

(The boring answer is that this is due to timezone differences, but I liked the time machine idea much better. Talk to you again in 1995!)
