You know what’s better than $1 million? $1 billion. Which is not only a line from some film or other (The Social Network, truth be told) but is also what must have gone through the minds of Kevin Systrom and co. when Facebook came a-knockin’ at Instagram HQ.
What Are The Best Alternatives To Instagram?
We asked you, What Are The Best Alternatives To Instagram? The response was good, with 10 different apps recommended by the MakeUseOf readership. These being Pixlr-o-matic, picplz, Fancy, Oil Paint, Old Photo, EffectCamera, After Focus, Cinemagram, Hipster, and Tadaa. Some are available on iOS, some for Android, most for both.
If this tells us anything, it’s that Instagram hardly has the marketplace sewn up at this point. Sure, it is currently the most popular photo-sharing app, but then MySpace was once the most popular social networking site. Facebook’s acquisition on top of the already enviable brand awareness should mean Instagram flourishes, but there are plenty of alternatives waiting in the wings for those open to a little experimentation.
Comment Of The Week
Comment of the week goes to ‘saskia’, who gets nothing but my admiration and respect (which is surely more than anyone needs) for:
picplz! I like picplz better then instagram. Also: LittlePhoto.
[The reasons being...] The filters, automatic backup to dropbox as well as the automatic posting on several other sites (twitter, facebook, posterous (plus my wordpress website via posterous), tumbler, Flickr, Foursquare, etc.). Being able to view my photos as well (as the photos of people I follow) on their website (picplz.com). The website has a nice clean interface on and the ability to view large versions of the photos.
What I like about LittlePhoto: unbelievable large amount of filters.
Which was enough to at least get me interested in trying both apps out. ‘Rob’ also deserves a mention for recommending Cinemagram, an amazing iOS app which allows you to animate a small portion of a photo to create a GIF to share online as you see fit.
At the same time I was conjuring this column out of the ether, Yaara was working on the Top 6 Instagram Alternatives You Really Should Try. Obviously great minds do think alike from time to time. Many of the suggestions made here were included in her rundown, so be sure to give it a read for a more in-depth investigation into alternatives to Instagram.
We’ll be asking a new question tomorrow, so please join us then. ‘We Ask [You] Tell Us’ is a weekly column dedicated to finding out the opinions of MakeUseOf readers. We ask you a question and you tell us what you think. The question is open-ended and is usually open to debate. Some questions will be purely opinion-based, while others will see you sharing tips and advice, or advocating tools and apps for your fellow MakeUseOf Readers. This column is nothing without you, as MakeUseOf is nothing without you.
