Years and years ago, I was addicted to Snood. This was before tablets, before smartphones, it was almost before laptops. Back then, there weren’t different versions of Snood; there was just Snood. And boy, was it addictive. I spent the best years of my life playing this game. Every free moment I had I would double click the blue ball with smiley face on my desktop and get immersed in the intricacies of this puzzle game. I couldn’t have enough.
Years have gone by, and I must say I almost forgot about Snood. It’s been years since I had it installed – my current computer never saw it – and for some reason, I assumed it doesn’t exist anymore. Guess what? I was wrong. Not only does Snood exist, it’s alive and kicking, with new Windows versions, Mac versions, and even an iOS version. Of course I couldn’t help but try it on my iPad, and discovered that while many things have changed, Snood 2012 is no less addictive that in the old days. And now it can go everywhere with me! I’m officially doomed.
OK, What In The World Is Snood?
For those of you who’ve managed to completely miss Snood, it’s a match-three puzzle game where you have to shoot a block at a time, creating groups of three or more. When such a group is created, the whole thing vanishes. Slowly but surely, you can clear level after level in this manner. Sounds familiar? There are dozens of games like this, but Snood was one of the pioneers that made this genre popular. This is what it looked like way back when I used to play it.
Notice the cute colorful faces? They’re still around, sort of. As are other elements from the old game. So what is it like on the iPad?
Playing Snood On The iPad
Snood is available for all iOS devices, and you can download it for free for the iPad or for other iOS devices. While the game itself is not limited in any way that I could see, the free version includes ads which are quite obtrusive. That means full-screen ads that just keep popping up. For the iPad, the full version costs $4.99, but it’s only $0.99 for the iPhone or iPod. Now that that’s out of the way, how does Snood for iPad compare with the old game?
As you can see, it’s pretty similar. One of the most important options you should set before you even start playing, is whether you want the old Snoods or the new Snoods. The old Snoods are almost identical to those of yore, and the new ones… well, I’ll leave that to your own judgment.
Snood for iPad comes with four different play options: classic, time attack, puzzle and story. In classic, you play one level at a time, with a random Snood layout and ever-increasing difficulty. Time attack is pretty self explanatory, and story is similar to classic, only with a story attached to it. My favorite one, just like on desktop, is puzzle, where you need to beat a set amount of levels, each with its own unique puzzle to solve.
The music that comes with the game is a bit annoying, and the sound effects, while similar to the old ones, are not quite the same. Nevertheless, if you have some music on your iPad, you can listen to it while playing Snood by enabling the music library option in Game Music. Perfect pass time for a long bus ride if I ever saw one.
Snood on iPad even includes some new Snoods which can help you on your way or ruin everything for you, but these might exist on the newer version on Windows and Mac as well.
So How Bad Are Those Ads?
Let me be straight about it: the ads on Snood are one of the most annoying I’ve seen on an iOS game lately. This is mainly due to the fact that they’re fullscreen, and pop up too frequently. That being said, you can get rid of them by tapping the x at the corner, and once you get used to it, you barely notice the ad. My advice to you is, then, try the free version first. If you really love the game and think you might play quite often, the paid version is definitely worth it.
Is Snood for iPad as good as Snood for Windows? I would have to go with no. Yes, it’s still quite addictive, and I can definitely see myself playing it over and over again now that I have it installed, but it will never become the cult it used to be. I miss the good old sound effects!
