Back in the early days of Windows, Lavasoft Ad-Aware was known as an excellent anti-spyware program that many of us used alongside a complete anti-virus suite. Much has happened since those days, and over the past several years, Ad-Aware has become a fully fledged security suite including an anti-virus, a firewall, and many other features, including its “legendary” anti-spyware engine.

The latest version of Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Ad-Aware Pro 10.5, was featured in several giveaways in which you had a chance to win a free copy of the security suite. Didn’t get lucky last time? We’re now offering you another chance to get a 1-year license for Ad-Aware Pro for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. All in all, we’re giving away 10 copies of Ad-Aware Pro worth $360 for FREE!

Sounds good? Keep reading if you need a reminder of what Ad-Aware Pro 10.5 has to offer, and to find out how you can win a copy of your own!

Ad-Aware Pro

ad-aware-pro-1

Ad-Aware Pro 10.5 offers an abundance of features, the most prominent of which for most users would be the sheer speed of its scanning process. A quick scan of my hard drive took Ad-Aware Pro exactly 6 seconds, and scanned my entire registry and cookies, all my running processes, and my rootkits. It does not scan all users and all local drives, but for a quick scan, it definitely does the job, and does it quickly.

Aside from both quick and full scans, you can also set up a custom scan and choose exactly what you’d like the scan to include, for the most efficient results for your machine.

In addition to virus and spyware scanning, Ad-Aware Pro 10.5 also includes the following features:

Real-time protection: this feature constantly monitors your computer’s activity, scanning your downloads, new data packets, and any other suspicious activity on your system.

Firewall: while Windows does come with a built-in firewall, Ad-Aware’s is much more configurable and will suit advanced users better.

Gaming mode: this mode suspends security alerts, scheduled scans and updates, so your gaming (or other) performance doesn’t suffer. It keeps on the minimum necessary services to still keep your system secure.

Additional features: these include safe browsing, shop and bank online safety, identity monitoring (US only), external storage scanning, email protection, etc.

Using Ad-Aware Pro Alongside Other Suites

Unlike many security suites which don’t play nice together, Ad-Aware Pro can be installed in a compatibility mode which installs it as a second line of defense. This means that you can use the features you like from Ad-Aware Pro alongside another anti-virus program or security suite, without them interfering with each other’s activities.

Note that the program’s Express install automatically installs Lavasoft’s Safe Browsing add-on on your browser, and makes Lavasoft’s SecureSearch your browser’s default search provider on all your browsers (you can’t choose which). You can untick these options in the install screen, but you need to pay attention.
