What are you doing here my friend? Better put in some effort at being famous, and then open a Twitter account. You won’t need to warm the seat of you pants reading this post or do the gruntwork. Well, I am half-joking because most of us don’t have the luxury of a name like Barack Obama, Justin Kutcher, or any one on my friend’s compilation of 9 Most Searched For Celebrity Twitter Feeds Online. We won’t generate Twitter followers because of a famous surname. No siree! We have to work our asses off before we cross and start causing a few fail whales to show up on Twitter.
We may not be cultural icons or have caused a scandal recently. But there are ways we can build up our follower list and get a few hundred (if not tons) of Twitter followers.
Create Something Useful For Your Followers
Blogging could be the easiest (or hardest) route to generate Twitter followers in a relatively short time. But even if you don’t blog, you can create a platform by guest blogging. You can write an eBook or do a podcast. Make presentations slides on your favorite subject and host them on Slideshare. If you have expertise in one area, you can do a webinar. If all these seem too much of work, follow on to the next point.
Grow Your Twitter Following By Asking & Answering Questions
A few months back I had written about Replyz that turns Twitter into a Q&A platform. That remains a good service to grow you Twitter following and at the same time building your online reputation for a particular area. Similarly you can tap into other Q&A services and use your Twitter handle (that is your Twitter name) as signature. But do make sure that your Twitter profile defines you because you are in some ways trying to build a personal brand here.
Host Contests and Giveaways on Twitter
Here at MakeUseOf.com, we hold regular giveaways. We promote the hell out of it on Facebook and Twitter. You can be sure that we get a lot of interested readers. Everyone loves a freebie and also a challenge. But I think that one has to be careful here as contests and giveaways alone can’t be the lone dangling carrot. You have to back it up with value that will keep the followers coming back for more. Twitter has its own sets of guidelines on contests. A simple Google search will net you more information on the how & whys of contests.
Host a Twitter Chat Session
Twitter chat could be an invaluable tool to generate Twitter followers fast. You can either host one yourself or join in one. What’s important is the engagement you put into the process and the social contacts you manage to nurture. Heck you can organize protests (as we saw last year) with Twitter. For conciseness, I won’t be able to elaborate more here but you can learn more with a Google. In Twitter chat sessions, participating members use a Twitter hashtag to follow the conversation in real time. You can use a web app like TweetChat to create a Tweet chat room. You can also use a Twitter chat client like Bonfire, Hootsuite, or .

Attend a Tweetup
Tweetups (Twitter meetups) are physical face-to-face connections with the Twitter crowd. It’s a great way of making new friends (living breathing real ones) and expanding your Twitter circle too as someone may bring along other friends. And you get to use more than 140 characters! Such hashtags and handshake meets are indispensable tools for building small business and even for freelance workers. A massive example of a Tweetup is NASA Social. You can use Twitvite and Twitter Meetup to search for local Tweetups or do a search on Twitter for local meetups.
Scheduled Tweets Are Fine but…Tweet at Different Times of the Day Too
Just like all good things in life, media analytics tells us that sending tweets at specific times of the day could be the trick for wider exposure. We have looked at Timely and Buffer that help you do just that. But I think you should also go against the grain sometimes and try posting at different times of the day too to get different sets of followers. Scheduling is a complex job with many variables, so try out your own times. Mix it up.
Be Funny. Be Optimistic
I am pretty sure that of all these points here, you are going to remember this the most, or at least the bio above. Nothing stimulates like a funny Twitter bio-line or a creative profile photo. Instead of releasing those birthday suit scandalous photos, try humor instead. It will put less people off. Be positive in your tweets too. No one likes a pessimist.
Don’t Forget The Basics
Just tweet and don’t be a jerk. Probably the best Tweet tip I have ever received. Ask yourself just like when you yourself click the “Follow” button on some Tweeps profile – why should someone follow me? The answer is that you have to create value for that person. So, link your profile to all that you do online. Create engagement either through your work or by simply re-tweeting useful tweets. Go back to point number one. You can get tons of Twitter followers if you make it the promotional arm of your main activity.
I have bypassed the usual methods to gather more Twitter followers in this article and gone for a side road. Each and every information on Twitter has a germ of an idea on how to use it more effectively. You will find lots in our archive of Twitter posts. Here’s a random sampling:
