The Defragmenter is a GUI (Graphic User Interface) application for program Contig by Sysinternals.If you’re an average XP user the standard Disk Defragmenter utility will do a good job of keeping your drives defragmented and help to maintain peak system performance.

@Chris: No, it shouldn’t take 7 hours on a 80GB Hard disk. Try “Auslogics Disk Defrag” or “DisKeeper”. I tried Auslogics last week on a 80 GB hard disk.. it took roughly 25 minutes on both drives -

Is defragging supposed to take 7hours for a half full 80gb drive? Mine did with SmartDefrag last week. (First defrag ever)

I have to agree on the whole, Windows defrag uses the diskeeper engine anyway. I must confess to liking the ability to right click a folder and have it defragged in JKDefrag though.

I guess it’s just about the features really.

I’ve used a few of these programs, and I finally chose Diskeeper Pro (2008) for my system. It was the most user friendly and time-saving utility out of the lot. Just install it and enable automatic defrag mode, and it does the rest…couldn’t be easier! Diskeeper defrags in the background using only idle resources so it never hurts my usage. Final results are great- all the drives always show minimal fragmentation and games load rapidly and play without stuttering, yet I never have to waste my time defragging

Actually you missed the one i think its the best, and free, defrag software, that is UltimateDefrag, the free version, its simple and has some good features.

I second Diskeeper. I think its extermely useful for those who dont want to run defrag manually and its also far more efficient compared to the Windows defragger. The fact that it has a great GUI is only an additional advantage.

Those programs honestly are just more expensive versions of the regular defraggers. Speaking in terms of Windows, the Windows defrag tool works just fine if not best and it’s free with your windows. Most of those are just more glamorized (better ui) versions of windows defrag ..you’re paying for the bonus of it adding a scheduled task to run the program at random intervals. That’s it – o&o for example, does the same damn job as windows defrag – in fact it uses windows defrag commandline utility to run the defrag.

So I recommend Windows Defrag – price: FREE

Use Linux (ubuntu) and you won’t need a defragmenter software. By the way, you won’t need an antivirus either…
