I’ve made it no secret that I am a big fan of classic video games. I’ve written about NES games with insane values, websites for collectors, and even games that retailers overcharge for. Of course, not everyone is ready to run out and buy all the classic systems because they tend to take up a lot of space, and collecting classic video games can be an expensive hobby. If you have an iPhone or other iOS device, you can play some awesome classic games legally on it.
We’ve covered some classic Sega games before, and that is just the tip of the iceberg for what is out there in terms of classic games that have been remade for iOS devices. There are tons of emulated and rebuilt games available, and some of them are quite good. If you want to get a taste of the classic gaming scene without diving into the addicting world of collecting, using your iPhone is the perfect way to go.
Mega Man X
Mega Man is one of my favorite classic gaming franchises, and the X series is arguably the pinnacle of it. Mega Man X is a great remake of the original with well made controls and good-looking visuals. If you love Mega Man, and you want to experience some of that old school goodness, you will love Mega Man X.
PAC-MAN is, without question, one of the most important video game franchises of all time. It’s one of the first to feature a character that captivated the world, even if he’s just a little yellow circle. You can get the original PAC-MAN experience on your iPhone with solid controls and the old school style you’d expect. You can also get a free version, MS. PAC-MAN, and even the modern Championship Edition.
Space Invaders is another one of those games that took the world by storm long before the great video game crash of the 1980s. There are plenty of versions of the classic game available on iPhone, including a faithful remake of the original by TAITO. You can also play a modernized version called Space Invaders Infinity Gene, which tweaks the core gameplay and is absolutely fantastic.
The Secret Of Monkey Island
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is a fantastic recreation of the genre-defining point and click adventure. LucasArts did an amazing job of keeping what made the original game awesome, and because of the touch interface of iOS, it plays incredibly well. If you want to see why point and click adventure games are so beloved by old school gamers, this is a classic video game you need to have on your iOS device.
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage is one of my favorite side-scrolling beat ‘em ups, and the iOS version is very faithful to the original. Because the game only requires a couple of buttons and a d-pad to play, it works perfectly. Of course, it’s better with a physical controller, but so are most games. If you want some classic Genesis/Mega Drive action, download Streets of Rage, and you will be quite happy.
When most people think of Japanese role-playing games (JRPG), Final Fantasy is the first game that comes to mind. It is one of the most popular games available, and it has an incredible pedigree going all the way back to the Family Computer/NES. There are a lot of Final Fantasy games available on iOS such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy, Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, and Final Fantasy IV. If you love Final Fantasy, the App Store has you covered.
Secret Of Mana
This is another fantastic JRPG you can download on your iOS device. It is almost a perfect remake of the original. There is a reason this classic video game is one of the most sought after by SNES/Super Family Computer collectors – it’s amazing. If you love JRPGs, Secret of Mana on iOS is a game you absolutely need to play.
This is only the tip of the iceberg for classic games on iOS, but this should certainly get your virtual classic game collection started. Each of these games is faithful to the original while bringing some new improvements. If you love classic games, and want to take them anywhere you go, the games on this list will keep you busy for hours on end. Download them now, and thank me later!
